Today's starting lineups. Iniesta on the bench and Asensio starting for him. Still can't figure out why David Silva is playing. He's been really bad. Also Nacho getting the start over Carvajal who doesn't seem fully fit. He's been bad also.
Quote:
Espana XI - De Gea, Nacho, Piqué, Ramos, Alba, Busquets, Koke, Asensio, Isco, Silva, Diego Costa
Russia XI - Akinfeev, Fernandes, Kudryashov, Kutepov, Ignasevich, Zhirkov, Samedov, Kuzyaev, Golovin, Zobnin, Dzyuba

find myself agreeing with Kyle again, the defender did make contact with the ball but it was still at the feet of Rebic and the defender brought him down...couldn't be a more naked example of a DOGSO, straight red and PK////
Yeah with only a few minutes left maybe it doesn’t make a difference. But if that’s not a straight red for denying a clear opportunity, I don’t know what is
I think we're saying exactly the same thing.
To flesh it out a bit more, I guess the justification of the yellow was that the defender made contact with the ball. Had that contact then put the ball beyond the reach of Rebic, e.g., over the goal line, it would be a different discussion. But, AFTER that contact, the ball was clearly still playable by Rebic, and the defender's legs tangled Rebic's and brought him down.
it reminded me of the Suarez handball in 2010 against Ghana. Almost feel like the goal should be awarded. And in that case Uruguay ended up winning. Didn’t feel right
The irony that it was Modrić's perfectly weighted and placed ball to Rebic that resulted in the penalty that Modrić could not convert--how not right would it have felt had Denmark won?
that would have resulted in a red card and penalty. An instance like what Suarez did would still result in a red, however, if you're making a legitimate play on the ball, and they call a penalty, they won't award a red card as well.

I love good passing. Both in soccer and basketball. That Modric pass was ridiculous. Good lord.
giantBCP is entirely correct. The revisions of 2016 still permit a send-off (Red Card) for a DOGSO on a handball, wherever in the field it takes place, and for pulldowns, pushes etc., but not in a situation where a DOGSO occurs in the course of making a play on the ball.
Denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity
Where a player denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring
opportunity by a deliberate handball offence the player is sent off wherever the
offence occurs.
Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own
penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity
and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned if the offence
was an attempt to play the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling,
pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.) the offending player must be sent off.
Seems like Russian players have ran the farthest during tournament than any other team by far..
could be adrenaline from being host country or could be something else hmmmmmm
of course the ENTIRE Russian Team was accused of doping in 2014 Brazil games but mysteriously after 2 year investigation that ended right before this World Cup -- FIFA found "insufficient evidence".
Brazil is vulnerable and Mexico took down Germany, but as we saw the group stage move along, that win looks less impressive now.
I think Coutinho will be the X factor once again and perhaps look to Roberto Firmino coming on to make a critical play later in the game.
Brazil should consider giving Firmino the start. Gabriel Jesus has struggled and that Liverpool connection between the two might be just what they need. Coutinho has been phenomenal.
collapse v Sweden. As noted the 1-0 over Germany is now a bit suspect, but I attributed the win to Mexico's pace on the ball and individual quickness overall, which I thought would also translate against Sweden. Against another smaller, quicker side ROK Mexico held its own. I think Brasil can certainly play that game yet also with more physicality. Lozano is struggling with fitness and I think Chicharito has lost something. I think Brasil is superior in goal and look to Brasil to continue playing.
they have video. Why not give a card for the theatrics. I really don't know how with the quality of footage today that people obviously exaggerate contact and why they can't be disciplined for such crap.
I've often believed that soccer should have a rule that if you stay down on the ground, you have to leave the pitch for a certain amount of time.
If you fake an injury(or have a legitimate one) in almost any other sport, you have to exit the field. Make these guys sit out 2 minutes or something like that if cards aren't going to be issued.
It is really easy to tell that a guy getting hit in the shoulder who grabs his head is faking it.
fan club. I thought he should've started all along. Whether its next to Salah or Neymar the guy just goes about his biz being a silent assassin who gets almost no headlines.
be hesitant labelling them the team to beat. They've had a pretty easy road and haven't been all that convincing. Even today it's not like they had a ton of chances.
went down in the box flailing his arms like an idiot without even being touched in the group stage, it should've been a yellow.
Luckily, the penalty the ref called was reversed on review, but how the fuck do officials fall for that crap in the first place? If I see Suarez writhe on the ground and there's no blood, I'm carding his ass. Same with Neymar.
I just hate that it isn't just accepted in the game, but that challenges where players are faking it often are rewarded with disciplinary action on the defender.
so many of the top teams are all on the top half of the bracket. I like what Croatia is doing and hope they keep winning to see more of Modric's game, but some of these top-half matches could be intense.
What a shootout. Some horrible shots. Some great saves. What a great World Cup day.

Somewhere, hopefully, David Diehl wasn't driving today.
Kick save and a beauty!
I don't know if I've seen a better penalty save than that one.
Just watching the highlights now. "Kick save and a beauty!" is right for sure. That was a helluva penalty save.

If we could just morph this over to the football threads!!

Without a doubt, the soccer threads here are fantastic. Even if there is a bit too much Real Madrid talk :)

BBI soccer threads are great. I feel like it really weeds out the doofuses.
I agree.

Agreed. Firmino >>> Gabriel Jesus
Neymar should win an Oscar for this theatrics but on the other hand he
is is constantly getting mug especially right after he passes the ball.
I'd put my money on France.
