This is the golden standard of why the Mets will always be a mess no matter the farm system or free agent attempts

Before the Bobby Bonillia deferred deal, the Mets deferred 40 percent of Darryl Strawberry's 1990 salary of $1.8 million at a 5.1 percent interest rate to be paid from 2004-2033.

That payment was later sold by the IRS to the highest bidder in 2015.

Not sure why Bonillas is the funniest.
PhiPsi125 : 7/1/2018 3:22 pm : link
This is actually quite common around the league. Do we really need to invent more things to kill the Mets on?
and that doesn't even consider
pjcas18 : 7/1/2018 3:29 pm : link
the fact that deferring Bonilla's $5M allowed the team to sign Hampton, and then let Hampton go in FA and draft Wright.

While a punchline to those who don't really understand it, the Bonilla deferment was actually one of the better moves the Mets franchise has made.

the downside of it is obviously they were counting on continuing to get the rates of return on their investments that they got before he was busted. Even with less return on their investments it's not that bad a move and when you consider the options it provided it's a good move.
I was referring to the
pjcas18 : 7/1/2018 3:30 pm : link
returns with Madoff above.
Great deal for the players.
section125 : 7/1/2018 3:30 pm : link
keep getting checks for years and years so they could not piss it away - except Strawberry.
Your annual reminder...
Dunedin81 : 7/1/2018 4:43 pm : link
The decision was smart for the Mets. Properly invested (not with Madoff, but that wasn't the GM's fault) they would have come out way ahead. It was a good idea for Bonilla only because it saved him from his own profligacy.

The Sutter deal assumed a 12 percent rate of return, which was crazy even when it was concluded, and envisions a lump sum at the end. That deal is much, much dumber for the franchise, but people prefer to laugh at the Mets.
Yeah if Bonilla has a lump sum and managed it well

Thanks for adding a new word to my vocabulary. I can say with fairly strong certainty that I have never heard or read that word before now in my entire life. Looked it up just now.

My guess is that the payout is from an annuity
Section331 : 7/2/2018 8:58 am : link
the Mets bought almost 20 years ago. This is a tired non-story. For those who complain about Mets being cheap, they used the money they saved to pay Mike Hampton, who helped them get to the WS. Win-win, as far as I'm concerned.
Its still funny
UConn4523 : 7/2/2018 10:05 am : link
even after knowing why the payment was deferred. It will always be funny.

It's simply an annuity
Csonka : 7/2/2018 4:19 pm : link
Not nearly the big deal some make it out to be. They deferred $5.9 mil from 2000 thru 2011 and amortized the payment over the next 25 years @ 7%.

7% is high today, but not outrageous back then.

Theres no annuity. It was all based on Madoff, who was providing a consistent 10% return per year. From their perspective, deferring the salary @ 7% return to Bonilla was a net 3% return to them. And it was for awhile.
But that's not the GM's fault...
Dunedin81 : 7/2/2018 4:53 pm : link
it was a sound financial decision at the time.

Sutter, by contrast, is getting 12% interest AND a lump sum principle payment at the end. THAT is insane.
Lolz
giantsFC : 7/3/2018 4:06 am : link
At all the defenders of this shit move. And the new trending excuse for it.

They got mike Hampton bc of this? Since when was there a salary cap in baseball? David Wright was drafted bc the Coupons decided to pay a player for 25 years....who barely saw the field.

If Bernie Madoff didnt get caught this would have been the deal of the century....Jesus Christ. .

It was a crap move by a crap organization. I wish I was born a Yankees fan or a red Sox fan.

Ok off for my morning bike ride, maybe its just early and im Cranky.

A few thoughts
Matt M. : 7/3/2018 6:44 am : link
1) This was Bonilla's idea (or his agent/manager) to save him from himself. It forewent a lot of money up front for more money in the form of much smaller annual payments.

2)Mets kwnership went along because under l ther circumstances, they stood to make a little money also. They just happened to have made a bad invesfment decision that blew up in the form of Madoff.

3) Cap or not, this absolutely freed them up for FA pursuits like Hampton. Had they paid Bonilla his full salary on schedule, they very likely spend less on FA. That is how they run their team.
I'll add
Matt M. : 7/3/2018 6:49 am : link
every year people come on here (and elsewhere) making comments about this being an example of the Mets as a laughingstock. And also deriding Bonilla for being paid to not play. Both are just not true. The Mets actually benecitted from this deal and would have benefitted more if the money was invested wisely. Bonilla just made a sound decision to support himself and his family after his career.

It's a ploy by Boras that the Nats are happy to oblige. He gets to report all of this deferred money as part of the contract value, because technically it is. "Record setting Boras contracts!" But if you're getting $10 mil 10 years after you stop playing it's worth a lot less now than getting $10 mil up front, both because of anticipated inflation and opportunity cost, namely the return one could expect on the money invested at a reasonable rate of return.

Bonilla could've taken the money and invested it with better returns. But this allows him a guaranteed and sustained level of lifestyle, without people stealing from/swindling him.
