NFT: Car $ rental Advice

UESBLUE : 7/2/2018 5:19 pm
Two summers ago we did Priceline bid for a car for a week in Vermont and stole an SUV for $17 a day. Last summer not quite as good but still got another SUV for 35$. Now Price line has ended the bidding thing and every site I see even with a union discount etc its 60$ or more a day after tip and tax. Anyone got a way to get a better deal etc? Thanks...
Enterprise or nothing..
DennyInDenville : 7/2/2018 5:29 pm : link
It's the best , by far, in every single way imagineable. Bottom
Line.

Now... sometimes the prices do get high, but more then 50% of the time you get ELITE value and BRAND NEW VEHICLES, and the price is MEGA CHEAP AND UNLIMTED MILES

UNLIMITED MILES...

So yea, I only book with Enterprise and would never even entertain the thought of ever trying another rental car company even just a search for one unless one of two things happen that I don't see happening which would be A.) a really unpleasant Enterprise experience, or B.) I'm
In Aruba and there is no enterprise.

Enterprise is always the answer.

Best of luck to you bro, all the love.
USAA?

AAA? Your company discount code?

There are many out there. I usually find the best deal going through the rental companys' websites with a corporate discount.
you tip
pjcas18 : 7/2/2018 5:29 pm : link
for a rental car on priceline? I've never used priceline, but that is surprising.

No advice other than my company allows employees to use our corporate travel rates for personal travel.

so i get good deals through the rental car companies.

Maybe your company does too (without knowing your line of work).
I've had great luck with National
DC Gmen Fan : 7/2/2018 5:29 pm : link
and they have rewards reciprocation with Enterprise.
Always make sure your credit card provides insurance
DC Gmen Fan : 7/2/2018 5:30 pm : link
Many companies who allow you to use their corporate code will not cover you if you are in an accident on personal time.
I've gotten Kia Optimas for $600 for 3 weeks brand new
DennyInDenville : 7/2/2018 5:31 pm : link
Drove them accords rhe country

I've gotten Explorers and driven them to Florida at $180 a week before , I've gotten Malibus for $120 per week times 3 weeks.

I've gotten F-150s in Cali for the price of an economy car

They are by far the best, they know it, and are trying to squash the shit out of what's left in their "competition"

Sad. I'd rather burn my money then not give it to enterprise
Lol jk
DennyInDenville : 7/2/2018 6:24 pm : link
Good luck tho.

$60 a day certainly isn't the worst, but it's def crappy for economy
Enterprise or bust
Giant John : 7/2/2018 9:41 pm : link
Just rented a Camaro SS. 43.50 per day for two days. That incl. tax and gas. What a blast!
Rates are high
WillVAB : 7/2/2018 10:26 pm : link
After Memorial Day up to Labor Day. It’s gonna be tough to find a bargain right now.

One potential hack is to call and say you got in an accident but don’t have rental coverage. Ask if you can get the insurance rate (in your case USAA I believe) for whatever car class you want (SUV I believe) and that you’ll pay OOP. The daily insurance rate is substantially cheaper than the retail rates. If they ask for a claim number the gig is up, and you’ll also have the potential bad karma if everything works as planned.

Another move if you’re dead set on paying bottom dollar is to wait until the day of to make the reservation. You may be able to get a below market deal on a vehicle if that particular location happens to have a lot of cars not on rent that day or not many reservations. Keep in mind you also run the risk of paying substantially more if they’re slammed or being SOL.

A corollary to the above move would be making a reservation for the cheapest car class and then upgrading when you get there. You may luck out and get an upgrade for free due to what’s available or you may be able to negotiate for what you want at a lower rate in store vs online. The downside is you may get stuck stuffing 4 people in a Fiat.

Hope this helps.

Incredible advice.

+1

I fully concur , that's expert level stuff.
Just took a family road trip in a rental...
Dan in the Springs : 7/2/2018 10:40 pm : link
Had the vehicle (2018 Chevy Suburban) for three plus days and put about 1500 miles on it all over northern California. Used Avis. They gave me a teacher's discount, but it still cost $450. I declined the liability protection they offered, as VISA offers free coverage but only if you decline.

Wish I had some secrets on saving money. All I can say is that I'm saving a ton over buying by renting only when needed.
Interestingly, after I prayed on this page...
Dan in the Springs : 7/2/2018 10:44 pm : link
The BBI sidebar ad changed to a discount coupon on Avis. Coincidence? I think not. It says 25% off. I wish I'd seen it before booking my rental lol.

Maybe turn out your ad-blocker and try googling car rentals and see what kinds of ads show up.
Also one thing to add!
DennyInDenville : 7/2/2018 10:49 pm : link
When booking, the weekly rate is usually better then a daily rate somehow

So instead of booking for 2-5 days, check the weekly rate and it might be similar price , just one more tip.

Goodnight
Last year I tried to rent a car in Denver...
Dan in the Springs : 7/2/2018 10:49 pm : link
Needed a week, didn't like the rates so I waited. Big mistake. By the time I needed the car there were none left. Seriously, in the entire town all the rentals were booked and none were available for the entire week. I ended up getting a day here and a day there, having to switch rental cars there times in a week is no fun and I got stuck paying more, so I don't know that waiting is always a great idea.

Make another reservation with the discount then cancel the original reservation. Then take a printout of the reservation to an Enterprise location and ask if they can beat it. The overwhelming majority of the time they will.

Renting at the airport is always more expensive than
Larry in Pencilvania : 7/2/2018 11:29 pm : link
An off site location. I have used hotwire and almost always gotten a lower rate than renting directly through t the rental agency. Costco is also a great resource
I've got National through work

and am an emerald club member. If you go with the emerald aisle choice you get to pay a midsize price for basically any SUV in the emerald aisle. Love how you can just skip the counter, pick the car you want, hop in and drive off.
wow yes
giantfan2000 : 7/3/2018 7:21 am : link
I used to do the same thing you could completely low ball with Priceline and get incredible rental car deals

once I got $5 a day for car in LA >.

now it is much more expensive

I have had good look with Thrifty
Mike in NY : 7/3/2018 7:35 am : link
But I am not wedded to any in particular. For an upcoming trip the best priced option is Turo, but I am not sure I can convince myself to go that route.
I am looking for rental car too
giantfan2000 : 7/3/2018 8:30 am : link
wow it is like 4X price of what I could get on Priceline!!

the problem with off brand rental car companies is they have less shuttles to get you from airport to rental car company and less people helping at desk ..

you end up losing a ton of time getting your car just to save a few bucks

Thanks for all the thoughts
UESBLUE : 7/3/2018 9:00 am : link
both times we have rented an economy and they gave us an SUV for same price. Its not super busy at Burlington weekdays. Altho things seem to be changing - we actually got a notice they expect a much busier tourist season in Vt this yr. Maybe the whole craft beer thing ? Anyway if somebdy has the magic bullet Im all ears. Otherwise Ill suck it up and not cheap out on my once a yr vacay.
Book (or re-book) about a week before your trip
hocuspocus : 7/3/2018 9:00 am : link
I did that in Orlando and was able to get a lower rate.
LOL..

Is it 1970 or something? What car rental place doesn't allow unlimited miles nowadays? Might as well tout Hilton Garden Inn for having HBO.

FREE HBO!!!
Denny is correct. Enterprise is the answer.
Maryland Giant : 7/3/2018 9:23 am : link
Rented a van yesterday for a two week family vacation.

Imagine my surprise when they advised me that the contract included unlimited miles at no extra charge?

Then, get this. I hop in the vehicle and immediately discover that there are power windows and AC. Almost shit myself giggling. Pulled out of there so fast...did not want then to notice the obvious errors.
try costco
