NFT: Mets @ Jays; Game 1, Trying to Continue July Dominance

jpkmets : 7/3/2018 7:13 pm
Mets are perfect in July so far.

They look to keep it going with Wheeler on the bump.

Boom! 2-0 Cabrera dinger.

Estrada is hurt and out for the Jays after 3 batters.

Really has been excellent. Has kept his WHIP and K's/IP steady moving from St. Luice to Bingo. Really nice year for him.

Yup and coming off last year where everybody was already shitting on him and calling him a bust, it's quite an improvement. Im guessing he's still working on things and will only keep getting better.
wow

7.2 IP 2 hits 2 walks 1 run 9 Ks for Dunn against Portland

ERA down to 2.41 over his five AA starts.

Agreed. He's certainly got the upside.
One thing still worries me about Dunn

Check out the lefty/righty splits. A team with a lot of lefties is going to eat him alive despite the numbers.
how is that not a balk

?

Just hear me out -- if a balk is an attempt to deceive the runner -- then how is starting your motion home and then pivoting, ok?

It really amazes me how many people seriously have the perception that our farm system has been poor under Sandy. This is the first "bad" year ever and I'm still going to list out all the publications rankings one of these days. And even at that, if you look at what happened this year... we graduated our two top prospects a year early due to trading off half our lineup at last years deadline. We had a bunch of injuries to guys like Szapucki and Humphries...

Systems take a dip from time to time. Its not worth jumping off a bridge over. I agree with you we'll be back in the middle of the pack next year.

Maybe it is just me and stats, but I actually would like to know more about Kevin Smith who has had 3 solid outings for Brooklyn albeit totaling 6 innings. When he pitched in the Cape he didn’t alllow a lot of hits and that has been his modus operandi so far for Brooklyn. Could be someone who does better in pros than in college because wood bats are less forgiving.

Big loony who is harder to hit than his “stuff” says because he’s ‘different’. Ceiling is a loogy. One of those “shitty college signable” picks people complain about al, the time.

I do agree with this. It's why heading into this year I thought he was due to be a reliever but it's not impossible to work on a change away or something over the next couple years to help that out better. He's still young enough.

He was doing ok against them at St. Lucie before the promotion -- be interested to see what happens rest of the year. Maybe needs a CU that he can pick up.
Big K there

Wheeler gasses out pretty early is my only complaint about him lately.

He seems to get loose with his motion at around 70 pitches. Needs to get the conditioning up a little more to keep that crispness for another 20 pitches.

It's true. He's missed the last 2.5 years so you gotta figure his body isnt used to pitching this much. I wonder when they will shut him down this year or how they will handle it.
Really hope we dont trade Wheeler
ZGiants98 : 7/3/2018 8:54 pm : link
and some team abuses him down the stretch. That would be tragic.

Wheeler missed two years and then had 86 innings last year.

So I would think that absolute max would be 150. Would set him up to have no limits next year.

Right... but do you think if some team that's in the hunt this year trades for him they will be shutting him down? Id hate to see him get abused after all he's been through. Ive seen him mentioned in trade talks already a couple of times.
This year frustrates me to no end...
ZGiants98 : 7/3/2018 9:08 pm : link
We were still .500 heading into June before we had a historically bad month.

Still...even with all that.. a lot of things went right. Our catching tandem both have a wRC+ over 100 and both are playing good D. Obviously Nimmo has been fantastic. Cabrera is having a career year. Wheeler and Matz both locked down the middle of the rotation. Some of the relievers are working there way into the pen (Peterson, Smith, etc.) Even Jose Bautista has been good.

Still if you would have told me what we would look like with no Cespedes, Thor, and Bruce. I probably would have predicted we would have had no chance. I know there are other contributors... Conforto hasnt been great.. Rosario is taking longer than expected. Frazier has been terrible since coming off the DL.

Oh well.
now that was a nice quick 6th for

Don't think any playoff team would be trading for him to lean on as a starter because of that reason.

Though they control him for what, another year beyond this one? So, maybe a "buyer" does that for a multi-year plan.

I will say this..
ZGiants98 : 7/3/2018 9:20 pm : link
Not that I would ever want him moved there now... But Wheeler would have been a fantastic closer if that's the route they went. He has basically been unhittable in the first few innings and his stuff is incredible touching 100 mph. His walks are also down. He likely would have been dominant there.
Good to see from Conforto

ZGiants98 : 7/3/2018 9:30 pm : link
Swap Bruce for somebody like Shaw if you can do it.

Keep the starting pitchers.

DFA Reyes.

Promote McNeil to play 2B/3B. Give Tj Rivera/Cecchini an extended look. Leave Smith alone at 1B.

Test guys like Bashlor, Drew Smith, T Peterson and maybe a Hanhold in high leverage situations.

That would be a team worth watching in the second half.

Settle with Wright. Gear up for a splashy offseason.

The good news is
Vanzetti : 7/3/2018 10:12 pm : link
The Mets have the makings of an excellent pitching staff: Degrom, Thor, Matz, Wheeler and quite possibly Dunn.

Mickaey has lost the team and you can’t judge by anything going on this year. But sign a real manager like Girardi and if a few of the young position players develop, his team can turn it around next year.
I give you guys credit

Couldn’t agree more. He should be the closer or 8th inning guy
I’ve been saying this for months

Lugo and Gsellman should be starters
Wheeler has no problem maintaining velocity
Vanzetti : 7/3/2018 10:50 pm : link
His last fastball was 97 mph. Pitch 104.

Would make no sense moving him to the pen. Also, Lugo and Gsellman have both floundered as starters. They are where they should be: in the bullpen.

Gsellman has struggled lately but he and Lugo give the Mets strong set=up guys who can pitch multiple innings. Huge asset in the pen.
gsellman is the heir apparent to Familia

How can they be huge assets if the pen has been this awful. It’s time to make a change and experiment. Lugo and Gsellman should start
I think
Sammo85 : 7/4/2018 9:06 am : link
Wheeler gets dealt. Cabrera should net you a B prospect or couple lotto tickets. Familia same thing. Wheeler could return a decent prospect from a pitching starved team trying to contend. I don’t see Noah getting traded but if Mets get bowled over for DeGrom they need to do it.

Gsellman and Lugo are doing what they did last year which is collapse later in the season. They’re simply pitching filler who tease as starters and wilt under a heavy workload in the pen.

Rosario while young has proven to be really underwhelming to me. I think we have to lower our expectations of what he’s going to be.

Hopefully they bring in an outside GM.
Rosario isn't young enough to be this bad
pjcas18 : 7/4/2018 9:34 am : link
if it was just his hitting I'd say it may take a little time to get acclimated to the bigs, but his defense is bad too.

Need to boot his mentor first and cut the cord.
One positive note
giantsFC : 7/4/2018 10:06 am : link
This csn be seen as a trial year to see if Matz and Wheeler can stay healthy And reasonably effective for an entire season.

So far so good. They seem to be getting better instead of worse. Which means maybe the 3 stooges keep this pitching staff intact, the Coupons inally opens back up the big market bank account and team spends on Machado, a top 10 1B, 2 gritty on base guys, a catcher and 6 relievers lol.

Would be awesome.
