5-time all-star, 4 GG's

2001-2015- 4th in baseball in fWAR trailing Halladay, Sabathia and Oswalt. He was really, really good.
fine
CMicks3110 : 7/5/2018 12:03 pm : link
but give me someone besides Niese as a good comp. Niese was never more than a decent 4. I'd have to think Peterson/Kay could be something more than that?
Jon
DanMetroMan : 7/5/2018 12:08 pm : link
Niese was worth 5.4 fWAR 2011+2012 and put up 5 seasons where he was a league average SP or better. That's a great outcome for any non-elite pitching prospect. 2011+2012 Niese was 38th in baseball in fWAR ahead of guys like Jon Lester, Ricky Nolasco etc Fangraphs values Jon Niese's career at 86.3 in value (by fWAR) that's not a sexy outcome but it's a very good one given the level of prospect we are talking.
Niese was a dick
pjcas18 : 7/5/2018 12:11 pm : link
so people may underrate him.

At his best he was a middle of the rotation starter.

I'd take that from any of these guys in the minors now, especially on a team that keeps deGrom and Thor.

You want an opening Day comp?
Shecky : 7/5/2018 12:14 pm : link
Fine...

Jon Niese
Lol

Trust me the Mets would too. if you told the Mets Peterson and Kay would be healthy Jon Niese they would jump for joy. Add that to what they have and the Mets rotation would be the best in baseball (or close to it). Lineup would still need help but you get the idea.
on a related point, if the Mets don't go full rebuild
CMicks3110 : 7/5/2018 12:20 pm : link
would you consider offering wheeler a 4 year 32 million contract today? He seems to be hitting stride and he'd be a great 3 for the next few seasons? We might be able to get him on the cheap given his injury history.
These
DanMetroMan : 7/5/2018 12:21 pm : link
would be the SP "prospects" in the system in quotes meaning guys who either have a good shot to see the majors as a SP or could be interesting down the line

Kay
Peterson
Crismatt (hard to see him succeeding with that FB but he's thisclose)
Dunn
Humphreys
Szapucki
SWR
James
Harol (again, I don't see it working but so far so good)

Very intrigued by Santos but so so far away

Dibrell has a live arm but command is very suspect
My problem with that statement is that they are grade a assholes
bhill410 : 7/5/2018 12:22 pm : link
If that’s what they would jump for joy over Peterson for.

You don’t take someone with Niese upside with that pick last year. I am not saying you aren’t right on upside but rather if you are right that’s another massive indictment of Sandy’s tenure

Why would wheeler take anything close to that??

That isn’t franchise specific. EVERY team would take that. Every single team.

cause he hasn't earned any money in his career. And his arm could fall off at any point? would 4 years 60 be better? arrietta got 3 60 and he was wayyy more proven than wheeler
What do you all think is

Dunn's upside?

Dunn's stuff has been up and down so tough to really say. In the end I think he ends up in the BP but he probably has similar upsides 3-4 starter best case. 2 pitch mix.
Kelenic
DanMetroMan : 7/5/2018 1:10 pm : link
1-1, should be promoted. GCL isn't a challenge.

Bases loaded. Line drive single to center. Kelenic charged it and got the runner at third for s force.

is the best prospect in the system. Ultimate upside remains to be seen but he's the one guy you could see "star" upside. Not saying Mauricio can't show that but he's really, really far away. Great start but he's a good 2 years behind Kelenic when it's all said and done.

Kelenic
DanMetroMan : 7/5/2018 1:45 pm : link
is #1 for me, Gimenez #2 followed by Alonso, then Peterson after that matter of opinion. Vientos and Mauricio are similar caliber prospects with high ceilings and low floors, Szapucki has limited sample size of success and TJ, Kay has missed bats (but at a very low level of the minors), but is also coming off injury, has been hittable, Dunn has a good FB, plus slider but may be a reliever, McNeil is having a MONSTER season but is 26. Those would be my top guys, after the 3 I don't have a really strong opinion.

don't forget Shewyn Newton and Luis Santana who are also playing lights out. Also Chris Viall has some upside.

Neither Newton or Santana belong in the top 10 discussion right now and I say that as someone VERY intrigued by Newton and believe Santana is being overlooked. Hard to get too excited regarding Viall. ALWAYS injured and yes he's 6'9 but NCAA 98 innings 72 walks, Minors 88.1 innings 58 walks. He's 23 in September at some point you have to throw an ability to throw strikes. John Calvagno did not have Viall in his top... 51 prospects in the SAL

also get the impression Shecky (who is a very optimistic fan) is not a Viall guy.

That veteran team just got old over the offseason. Harper would be wise to jump ship.

the comp for Kelenic was Mark Kotsay, but that HAS to be the floor. Could he have a Chase Utley offensive Profile?

Bunt scores the run. Nice bunt. Fundamental baseball at its finest.
Best part is the whole group jumps up screaming and high fiving. Nice to see them teaching the little things again.
Kelenic up again next
Kelenic is off to a great start
Csonka : 7/5/2018 3:15 pm : link
but it's his 9th game. Let him unpack his bags and settle in a little. People were complaining that Alonzo wasn't moved up quicker, and look at him now.
He’s more than ready for a promotion
Shecky : 7/5/2018 3:19 pm : link
Doing all the little things. Called strike he politely talks to the ump where the pitch was. Strikes out and talks to his coaches about the details of the AB. Man among boys in the GCL
Kelenic
DanMetroMan : 7/5/2018 3:23 pm : link
wouldn't even be young for Kingsport. I'd be really surprised/disappointed if he's still in the GCL 2+ weeks from now.

His swing reminded me of Yelich. That's kind of what I'm hoping for even if he has less power.

I got the same feeling when we drafted him and he certainly hasn't done anything to change my mind in his first few games. He's one of those players who's good at everything.

Max WoahTell
One of the strangest pre pitching moves, where he slid his back foot from the 1st base side of the rubber all the way to the 3rd base side. Then cherry on top was an awkward pitching motion. Thought it could be “fixed”, can’t blame that one on the scouts or the coaches...

Stanley Consuegra went 4 for 5 with a double,
Why would they release him
CMicks3110 : 7/5/2018 4:40 pm : link
he was a 3rd round pick in 2015. Only 21. Avgered a K per inning. His big issue was control. Seems very early to give up on a guy. Maybe he's a head case

That’s Dans things around here, so I’ll defer to him.
But arms are not the problem, tons of them.
Ones of interest are the post injury guys. The obvious Puck, Humphrey’s. Big guy like Hutch, Planck, Cleveland, etc

have my doubts with Planck just due to the nature of his injury but young guys tend to bounce back better.

Cavallaro? Skipping St. Lucie apparently. I wonder if that's temporary. His family seems very supportive on twitter which is cool. Lugo's mom is always tweeting to Mets fans (always nice).
