Things get shaky and very thin the further you move away from the line of scrimmage. This would be a really good year for the Giants to avoid the injury bug.
My on has Graves disease which can be a pretty significant thyroid issue for an athlete, but I'm very surprised to see the situation lingering this long.

First, I drink the Kool Aid each and every summer. Always have, likely always will. I'm optimistic but realize its all about how fast the young players learn and perform.
The starting group of Tomlinson - Snacks - BJ Hill should be solid, assuming BJ Hill is the player we think he is going to be and such.
The depth seems average at best. It is a shame Mauro is suspended for 4 games as he knows Betcher's scheme and could have been an immense help early in the season as players are figuring it all out.
My biggest concern this season is getting wrecked the first two games cause players don't yet fully understand the scheme. OL's and DL's (stunts and all that technical stuff I'm not sharp with...) take some time to develop and gel.
I also pray that 4th round pick McIntosh is ready for camp, no issues, and makes the team. I'd hate to IR him and lose his rookie year of development.

McIntosh seems likely to spend the entire year on PUP/IR. His injury and upcoming procedure are still largely a mystery.
I think he’s going to be a very good player. I think he was best suited to being a 3 tech DT but he will be tough as a 3-4 DE as well. Counting on a rookie as the other DE has risks but he seems like a good pick.
B.J. went back to NC St. recently (post mini-camp) and blew the coaches away with his conditioning. He looks quicker. Said he's been playing outside (I assume the outside 34DE spot as opposed to the interior spot going to Tomlinson) and fully expects to be a 3-down player. He can't wait to get the pads on.
There are some at NC State that liked Hill better than Chubb.
How could you not be? It’s almost one big unit working together with former defensive ends now standing upright. OV also has experience playing as a OLB in a 3-4 so I expect him to do well in this system. I think Goodson and Ogletree will be formidable in he middle and with Carter, Moss, Okwara... we should have plenty of weapons to rotate in and out to rush the passer.
My only concerns with the D are CB depth (bring back DRC!) and FS (seems like a bunch of mediocre talent vying for a starting role).

I know Bettcher will look to fabricate some form of a pass rush, but I think this D is that one pass rusher away from having that dominant front 7.

...the whole roster is quite top-heavy, in terms of both talent and cap space. If the top five players at each level of the defense stay healthy most of the year, the unit should be very good. The depth is largely waiver-wire quality - or worse, since several spots could be filled with other teams’ discards by mid-September. BTW, it helps that the Giants start the year behind only Cleveland for the beggars’ banquet. They can probably use Mauro’s roster spot for a low-cost, four-week try-buy on a talented young lineman that another team tries to sneak through waivers to the practice squad, or one who’s simply a better fit for Bettcher’s system.
While it’s nice that Hill and Tomlinson are potential three-down players, I hope neither of them will need to play more than 60-65% of the defensive snaps. These are very large men. High snap counts took a toll on Vernon and Pierre-Paul, who are 40-60 pounds lighter.

As for Carter, and to Eric's point re. OLB serving as DE/hands in dirt/OLB pass rusher hybrid, Carter struggled mightily against Alabama's big bodies, very ineffective. I thought it was a mis-use by his coaches, but it illustrates his limitations.

Interesting take. To me this article actually ruined my level of optimism by seeing the roster. You are gambling that a second year player and a rookie will be able to handle the NFL as top players in a Dline. It made it sound like Harrison will a,ways be double teamed which sucks. . And then the whole Vernon as a pass rusher LB and the names on the depth chart on top of one who is already suspended...my expectations on defense dropped.
I share the optimism. I really hope Hill is as advertised when it comes to his football smarts and picking up the playbook.

Our troubles are going to be teams that spread us out and throw.
Atlanta, New Orleans, Philly, those are going to be really bad matchups for us.

I feel we will be better against the run....
However, rushing the qb is almost a complete unknown.....
And pass coverage from our linebackers is anyone's guess...

Defense will need to stay healthy to be above average. If even a few guys start going down, we can be in trouble trying to adjust to new defense.

That makes it tough to successfully rush the passer, particularly from the outside.
Jints seem to be hoping that they can generate an inside pass rush which is the quickest way to the qb.
It certainly is cheaper to pay inside guys than outside.
Perhaps the added depth will allow for constant pressure for the entirety of the game. The upgrade in lbs has to help with the pass pressure also.
The lack of quality depth at corner makes all the above a necessity if we are going to improve our #31 ranking in pass defense
