Agree.
It would suck seeing Wilmer go, and I'm sure there will be more tears (from him), but I'd never let sentimentality impact baseball decisions and as much as I like him and feel he never got a legit chance in Queens, the future is likely without him
Quote:
If someone is willing to give something decent for Wilmer you move him. The Mets have RH Alonso + TJ Rivera. Wilmer won't even see many (if any) 1b reps going forward
Agree.

Really not a big fan of this supposed story where they are hesitant to move him because the fans like him. He's not David Wright or Mike Piazza. He's a nice role player due to make roughly 5 million next year, he's posted .5 fWAR over 64 games. Alonso is the future at 1b (RH), Rivera can likely do a decent Wilmer impression and quite frankly finding a solid bench piece generally doesn't cost 5 million.
It's not like people show up to see him and even if they did, I cannot name 1 fan who would rather lose with Wilmer than win with someone else.
zero fans.
if they use that excuse, it's a cop out.

On Peter Alonso:
He is one of my biggest whiffs ever, one pro scouting director said. I had him as an org guy.
Its pretty hard to argue with what he does, and the offense looks like its real in pretty much every way.
@Jacob_Resnick
Barring any late deals, #Mets are done with their 2018 draft signings (deadline is 5 PM today). They inked 30 of their first 31 picks (all but #20), 31 total. Spent $9,507,238 against the bonus pool, leaving $73,662 left over. Went over slot to sign 2, 3, 5, 6, 11, 21-23, 31.
Will be very interesting if he makes a big deal about that.
Shecky,
17 teams are sending 2, Padres actually have 3 listed
@keithlaw can Jeff McNeil be a top player at his position? What's his ceiling?

@keithlaw The kid rakes and has hit pretty much everywhere hes been. How can you discredit a .400 average in AAA?

Congrats on making the Futures Game, Pete. Very well deserved. Im not going to argue with you about projections for your teammate.

I appreciate it. But Im just letting you know he rakes. Hes also the only one on the team hitting above .300 at the moment. If it was so easy everyone would be doing what hes doing. Its ok to throw him a bone
But, as a biased Metnut, love how Alonso sticks up for his teammate. That's a pretty cool sign.
I'll mark your words. And I doubt get produces anywhere close to that.
McNeil has certainly been hurt by injury, so he gets maybe underrated, but you're marking your words that he'll go from not even on his own teams top 30 prospects and a possible chance of being exposed in Rule V to averaging 8 fWAR over three years or 145 or so wRC+
Unlikely.

Manfred announces in statement that Jenrry Mejia can begin working out with #Mets at minor league facility again after AS break, eligible to join minor league team on rehab assignment in Aug and rejoin big club next year if no further issues.

So he actually filed for reinstatement?
What do the Mets do?
He can't ever pitch for them again, can he?
He's still "only" 28. but he hasn't pitched in the majors in 3 years.
Part of me says ditch him, he's got to be one of the dumbest human beings alive, but part of me also says he'd probably be low-ish cost "talent" and better than shit bags like Ramos.
It's not like we have an abundance of good bullpen arms or even starter depth (i.e. Vargas still has a rotation spot).

Unlike last year when the Mets targeted minor league relief pitchers, assistant GM John Ricco said this time they want players major league ready, or close to it. So AA or AAA and higher.

Terrible approach if they follow through. That's the plan to hope to get back to not being awful but not contenders.
But who knows, I'd also be excited to grab someone currently out of favor like Francisco Mejia.
They should just take the best highest upside talent they can get at the deadline IMO.
I'd think they can get some interesting players back for Flores, Cabrera, Familia and maybe even something for Frazier. If someone wants to buy high on Wheeler, they should seriously think about it.
Trading for some other teams dom smith/gavin cecchini/luis guillorme/kevin plawecki is unlikely to make a bigger difference than any of those guys has on the state of the franchise.
So to me their strategy it's stupidly wrapping a short term goal (staying competitive) into what should be viewed as a long term move (adding talent in the farm system).
If they want a short rebuild like the yankees, they need to do what the yankees did resigning chapman, adding robertson, etc.
So you get the stance of a quick rebuild.
but only if they're willing to make aggressive moves.
Otherwise we'll be in this perpetual state of shit until deGrom or Thor sign long-terms deals (likely elsewhere).

Trevor Bauer says he's never signing a long-term deal. Only one-year contracts.
Why? Turns out he made a bet with a friend: If he ever signs a multi-year deal, the friend gets to shoot him in the nuts with a paintball gun from 10 feet away.

Perfect timing after Familia is gone. He can be setup man for Gselman
The positions we need replacements at have minor league talent close so you don't even have to go bananas in free agency. You are saving huge dollars if you roll with McNeil at 2B, Alonso at 1B, Rosario at SS, Nimmo in CF, Conforto in RF, and Plawecki at C. I see no reason why we couldn't be aggressive and sign at least one or two very big free agents supplement the roster.
Lets face it. Cespedes is a bust. He was the guy that was supposed to be our star hitter/franchise player and it has been a complete an utter fail. We swung big and completely missed. I doubt we can get rid of him but we need to be thinking about bringing another franchise player to the team at this point to replace what should have been. The thought process was still sound. He just wasnt the guy. With all the youth they will need a leader to make everything work also and it would be a crime to keep Thor and deGrom and not give them at a chance at the postseason.
Is some team really going to value Wheeler has a cheap Ace/number 2 type starter for next year? Because he's been pitching pretty close to that level for a while now and might even still be getting better (3.23 FIP in June). I doubt it. Might as well keep him.
I could be wrong and some team might go gaga over him but I just dont see it.
Id hate to see him in another uniform.
Send him to the minors and let him rot there. Maybe he figures it out, maybe he doesnt. But he cant be in the picture next year.
Still Joey bats w/ his first walkoff HR...GS style. This yr I'll take it. Are the Mets 3-1 for July? After 11-1 that might be the high point of the season so far
Believe Thor rehabs in Brooklyn on Sunday in case anyone is looking for a fun baseball excursion.
Metro -- any word on TJ Rivera -- has he started baseball activities?

Back to AAA to work on his craft and bring up Alonzo
But Braves and Carter Stewart didnt come to terms
I know there was a little debate about him here, and a few people really loved him.
For BrVes - lost Stewart this year and his slot money
But
Braves get a pick in next years draft and the slot money so all is not lost for them...

Apparently post draft physical turned up something and they couldnt agree on terms. Atlanta gets 9th Pick next year as compensation (since Stewart was drafted 8th). Diamondbacks and Dodgers also saw their top picks go unsigned. In case of Dodgers an overslot offer was turned down. 2nd Rounder Gunnar Hoglund also opted not to sign.

and Kelenic 1 for 3 with his first professional HR.
in the 1st game of a DHer.
Kelenic already 1 for 1 in the 2nd game.
Sure it's a small sample, but he's batting .475, I think he can be promoted.
