If someone is willing to give something decent for Wilmer you move him. The Mets have RH Alonso + TJ Rivera. Wilmer won't even see many (if any) 1b reps going forward

Agree.

It would suck seeing Wilmer go, and I'm sure there will be more tears (from him), but I'd never let sentimentality impact baseball decisions and as much as I like him and feel he never got a legit chance in Queens, the future is likely without him

Really not a big fan of this supposed story where they are hesitant to move him because the fans like him. He's not David Wright or Mike Piazza. He's a nice role player due to make roughly 5 million next year, he's posted .5 fWAR over 64 games. Alonso is the future at 1b (RH), Rivera can likely do a decent Wilmer impression and quite frankly finding a solid bench piece generally doesn't cost 5 million.
Yeah
pjcas18 : 7/6/2018 11:35 am : link
the fans should be the last reason to not trade a player like Wilmer.

It's not like people show up to see him and even if they did, I cannot name 1 fan who would rather lose with Wilmer than win with someone else.

zero fans.

if they use that excuse, it's a cop out.

Barring any late deals, #Mets are done with their 2018 draft signings (deadline is 5 PM today). They inked 30 of their first 31 picks (all but #20), 31 total. Spent $9,507,238 against the bonus pool, leaving $73,662 left over. Went over slot to sign 2, 3, 5, 6, 11, 21-23, 31.
Didn't

Not minors related but Manny Machado

has been an abomination at SS. -20 DRS in less than half a season. Absolutely dreadful. Something tells me he won't be dictating where he plays in FA with that line.

But not too shabby sending two to the futures game (no team sends 3). While all the real talent is far away in the lowest levels of the minor leagues...

That's
CMicks3110 : 7/6/2018 3:36 pm : link
pretty cool of Alonso to call out Keith Law. I happen to think Alonso is dead on about McNeil. Not to knock Law, but he should know that McNeil has only been at AAA for like 2 weeks and was killing it in AA.
I
DanMetroMan : 7/6/2018 3:43 pm : link
don't think either one of them came off poorly in that exchange. Law is snarky but he's allowed to have his own opinion.
Well said Dan,
Metnut : 7/6/2018 3:48 pm : link
nothing wrong with either person in that exchange.

But, as a biased Metnut, love how Alonso sticks up for his teammate. That's a pretty cool sign.
I'm

a McBeliever. Jeff P (who wasn't) and said he had 3-4 (ie extra player/utility upside) said he saw him multiple times this year and he was hitting rockets. I'm not saying he's going to be a star but if his glove is passable a pre-breakout Murphy caliber starter is within reach.

I'll mark your words. And I doubt get produces anywhere close to that.

McNeil has certainly been hurt by injury, so he gets maybe underrated, but you're marking your words that he'll go from not even on his own teams top 30 prospects and a possible chance of being exposed in Rule V to averaging 8 fWAR over three years or 145 or so wRC+

Unlikely.

So he actually filed for reinstatement?

What do the Mets do?

He can't ever pitch for them again, can he?

He's still "only" 28. but he hasn't pitched in the majors in 3 years.

Part of me says ditch him, he's got to be one of the dumbest human beings alive, but part of me also says he'd probably be low-ish cost "talent" and better than shit bags like Ramos.
Might as well put
Metnut : 7/6/2018 4:16 pm : link
Meija in AA or AAA and see how he does. Costs us nothing.

It's not like we have an abundance of good bullpen arms or even starter depth (i.e. Vargas still has a rotation spot).
They

Unlike last year when the Mets targeted minor league relief pitchers, assistant GM John Ricco said this time they want players major league ready, or close to it. So AA or AAA and higher.

Terrible approach if they follow through. That's the plan to hope to get back to not being awful but not contenders.
Ricco basically just said Mets aren't looking
ZGiants98 : 7/6/2018 5:11 pm : link
to have the best farm system. They want to have the best team so expect a short re-tool/rebuild. They arent going to trade deGrom/Thor. Its going to be Cabrera, Frazier, Familia, etc.
We'll see what they bring back but I'd prefer low level guys w upside
Eric on Li : 7/6/2018 5:20 pm : link
They were both big pieces of the RA Dickey deal, but purely at a theoretical level I'd rather roll the dice the way they did at the time with the not yet ranked Syndergaard types compared to TDA's who are higher ranked but also closer to fizzling out.

But who knows, I'd also be excited to grab someone currently out of favor like Francisco Mejia.
The problem with the "try not to be awful"
Metnut : 7/6/2018 5:22 pm : link
approach is that it really hasn't even worked. They've had what, 2 winning records out of the past 9 years (barring a miraculous 2018 turnaround)?

They should just take the best highest upside talent they can get at the deadline IMO.

I'd think they can get some interesting players back for Flores, Cabrera, Familia and maybe even something for Frazier. If someone wants to buy high on Wheeler, they should seriously think about it.
The 'try not to be awful' approach works better when you spend $
Eric on Li : 7/6/2018 5:26 pm : link
Sign Familia, Andrew Miller, and Machado in the offseason and they will be a lot less awful.

Trading for some other teams dom smith/gavin cecchini/luis guillorme/kevin plawecki is unlikely to make a bigger difference than any of those guys has on the state of the franchise.

So to me their strategy it's stupidly wrapping a short term goal (staying competitive) into what should be viewed as a long term move (adding talent in the farm system).

If they want a short rebuild like the yankees, they need to do what the yankees did resigning chapman, adding robertson, etc.
Mets in a legit rock and a hard place situation
pjcas18 : 7/6/2018 5:43 pm : link
with two TOR starters you arguably have the two hardest pieces to get to contend, but not much else reliable after that, and Thor isn't exactly reliable.

So you get the stance of a quick rebuild.

but only if they're willing to make aggressive moves.

Otherwise we'll be in this perpetual state of shit until deGrom or Thor sign long-terms deals (likely elsewhere).
This is awesome
pjcas18 : 7/6/2018 5:52 pm : link
the kind of thing I could see me and my friends doing, but never really following through on.

Why? Turns out he made a bet with a friend: If he ever signs a multi-year deal, the friend gets to shoot him in the nuts with a paintball gun from 10 feet away.

Perfect timing after Familia is gone. He can be setup man for Gselman
Im good with Frazier getting moved.
ZGiants98 : 7/6/2018 6:26 pm : link
Love Flores but he can go too if it frees up some coin. Trade Bruce for McGee or Shaw if you can. Clear as much salary as possible. My gut tells me this its Wrights final go of it and he will try to get on the field in September for a farewell tour. Hopefully, they can settle with him in the offseason similar to Cuddyer freeing up even more money. Plus Ramos, Familia, Cabrera, et. coming off the books we could free up close to 50 million of everything goes right.

The positions we need replacements at have minor league talent close so you don't even have to go bananas in free agency. You are saving huge dollars if you roll with McNeil at 2B, Alonso at 1B, Rosario at SS, Nimmo in CF, Conforto in RF, and Plawecki at C. I see no reason why we couldn't be aggressive and sign at least one or two very big free agents supplement the roster.

Lets face it. Cespedes is a bust. He was the guy that was supposed to be our star hitter/franchise player and it has been a complete an utter fail. We swung big and completely missed. I doubt we can get rid of him but we need to be thinking about bringing another franchise player to the team at this point to replace what should have been. The thought process was still sound. He just wasnt the guy. With all the youth they will need a leader to make everything work also and it would be a crime to keep Thor and deGrom and not give them at a chance at the postseason.
Im also not a big fan of dealing Wheeler or Matz
ZGiants98 : 7/6/2018 6:35 pm : link
I just dont think they will be valued as highly as they should be because of their injury pasts.

Is some team really going to value Wheeler has a cheap Ace/number 2 type starter for next year? Because he's been pitching pretty close to that level for a while now and might even still be getting better (3.23 FIP in June). I doubt it. Might as well keep him.

I could be wrong and some team might go gaga over him but I just dont see it.

Dom bunting for the W still might have been the right play (if they don't have exp bunting, w/ all these shifts they should be practicing by now)...not easy but still the smart play w/ 1 out and DS sucking w/ the bat

Still Joey bats w/ his first walkoff HR...GS style. This yr I'll take it. Are the Mets 3-1 for July? After 11-1 that might be the high point of the season so far

But Braves and Carter Stewart didnt come to terms
I know there was a little debate about him here, and a few people really loved him.
For BrVes - lost Stewart this year and his slot money
But
Braves get a pick in next years draft and the slot money so all is not lost for them...

Apparently post draft physical turned up something and they couldnt agree on terms. Atlanta gets 9th Pick next year as compensation (since Stewart was drafted 8th). Diamondbacks and Dodgers also saw their top picks go unsigned. In case of Dodgers an overslot offer was turned down. 2nd Rounder Gunnar Hoglund also opted not to sign.

Mauricio 2 for 4 a 2B and 2 RBI, he's batting .369

and Kelenic 1 for 3 with his first professional HR.

Kelenic already 1 for 1 in the 2nd game.

Sure it's a small sample, but he's batting .475, I think he can be promoted.
