So frustrating and I just don't get it. He gets good movement on his pitches but won't come near the plate with them. If he started them as strikes he'd probably get guys to chase but he starts so many them off the plate and guys just spit on them.
In 1972 Steve Carlton invented win day

It's bad enough he's a lose day guy but he's been burning up the pen in the process by not giving them innings. That's a double whammy.

Why
MookGiants : 7/6/2018 8:03 pm : link
do we have to keep running him out there? He doesn't give them length, he doesn't give them quality. They could call up just about anyone and get the same results. I also think the garbage he regularly produces impacts the confidence of everyone around him on the day he pitches

Cashman hasn't made many mistakes, that was one. Admit failure and move on and don't let him see another start for this ball club.

I suspect we’ll trade him eventually, may not be able to until the offseason. Strikes me as the kind of pitcher who will find it again in someplace like Pittsburgh or Milwaukee

I agree that I think he offers a lot of value to a smaller market team, especially an noncompetitive one. Maybe as part of a package in a trade for Hand?

Traded John Ryan Murphy for him straight up. Cashman is a genius.
IMO this is the reality with Gray.
LI NHB : 7/6/2018 8:26 pm : link
He has plus stuff but clearly hasn't figured out the mental component.

The Yankees need starting pitching and he's got time left on the deal.

That combination means that, in all likelihood, he kicks around and at the very worst gets pushed to long relief in the bullpen to try and regain some confidence. Then again if Hicks and Stanton stay hot and they steal one, he likely keeps the slot.

Either way, I don't see him moved from the roster one way or another.

To see Gray shit the bed again. Eventually the Yankees have to decide what's more important, the team or Grays feelings. It's one thing to lose when he pitches. However, having to go deep into your bullpen could effect the next game also.
I'm sure the ask for Hand will be a Chapman/Miller type
mfsd : 7/6/2018 8:36 pm : link
package of prospects.

Best case for Gray at this point is to trade for another starter, and perhaps shut him down for a few weeks, to see if he can find it down the stretch (unlikely, but can we really keep running him out every 5th day)

Then come offseason, maybe we can trade him for a couple B level prospects, and hope the Yanks can pull off some more of their recent magic finding guys like Loaisiga.

I'm just spitballing here...as long as Tanaka's out, we're short on options barring a trade. German, Loaisiga, and hopefully Sheffield soon will make their starts, but being both young and with innings caps it's hard to count on them all the way through to October.
lol..

No he doesn't give a shit. He does not learn. He does the same thing every game. Shitty batter up and he nibbles and throw balls, gets behind and gives up a hit. I seriously doubt that he is incapable of throwing strikes, yet he keeps doing it..

Sorry for the outlandish rants. Tired of a player of his caliber refusing to compete. He refuses to alter his game. I would understand getting hit. I do not understand going 3-0, 3-1 every batter.

Veteran, switch hitter with versatility. My guess is they think his lack of playing time has hurt him, and now with some regular playing time he'll get another shot. Probably his last shot at sticking with the team though.

Definite props to Hale on the hold. He's done his job well tonight.
It’s not that he likes to nibble, but he is getting shelled whenever
Jim in Hoboken : 7/6/2018 9:23 pm : link
he comes anywhere near the zone. And unfortunately nobody is biting at his pitches off the plate.

If he throws 94mph fastball down the middle and nobody can touch it, I am sure he wouldn’t throw anything else.

Rothchild should do something, anything different. Look at his Oakland A’s tapes. Go consult his old pitching coach. Something. Just telling him to nut up isn’t cutting it.

What are they waiting for with Sheffield? Haven’t they learned during these coiple of years? When this team needs a shot in the arm, the answer lies in the minors, in our system.

Job 1 this offseason has to be about improving the rotation. Severino is great. Tanaka was quite up and down before getting injured. CC's been mostly very good/great, but who knows if he'll be back next year, and he'll be another year older. You could make an argument the only solidified spot in the rotation next year is Severino. I don't really trust Tanaka completely next year as our #2 starter.
Gray is awful

Because it's starting to look like Gardy is a platoon candidate.

Frazier hit two more homers yesterday.

Gardy is my favorite player, but it is getting pretty hard to not get Frazier up to the big club.
I suspect Frazier will be a full-time starter next season.

Judge and Stanton were just awful.

Hick has been the team's only offensive player for about a week.

Shame because the team hit about 6 balls to center that were ripped and Pillar made great plays on 4 of them.

Yeah, I agree and think that's their plan but Gardy just isn't getting it done vs lefties lately. I'm not sure that's going to get any better either.

I say find a spot for Frazier and get him in there platooning with Gardy.
Overall the offense and the #'s are great
Stu11 : 7/6/2018 10:12 pm : link
But its really frustrating to see games like tonight where we don't hit a lick. Monday vs the Braves, a week ago wed. Vs Philly. I know it's baseball and with our record most years we'd be in first by at least 4 or 5 games. However with this ridiculous race vs Boston it seems to get amplified.

There was definitely bad luck (Travis also robbed them of a pair of hits), but Stanton and Judge were horrendous. That Stanton AB might've been the team's worst of the season and Judge looked clueless despite them throwing him the same damn pitch 80% of the time.

Unless they're talking a deGrom/Bumgarner level trade, he shouldn't be on the table. Trading him for Fulmer (or Hamels/Happ) isn't the right move.

I'm with you on that. I don't think Cash includes him in a trade unless it's for one of those two Aces, and I don't see either one of them being traded so I think Frazier is a Yank going forward.

Billy Martin isn't his manager. Martin woulda buried him. I remember he hated Kenny Holtzman, and buried him. Every time he'd use Holtzman, Holtzman would pitch a great game, then go back into Martin's doghouse until he needed him again. Of course, old George M., would have run Sonny out of town on a rail a month ago.
You must be remembering wrong. Holtzman stunk once he got here. He was a top pitcher with Oakland. He was having a good season in Baltimore when we got him midseason and he suddenly lost it and never got it back.

The Drury trade might turn out to be a dud also. Widener and Solak are both playing well. And Drury can’t get time ahead of Walker? I mean, do they really think Walker will be that lefty bat off the bench getting big hits in the playoffs? C’mon, let’s see what Drury can do, let’s not let trade look worse than it already has.

I don’t know what Walker has on literally everyone in the league maybe he’s just very likeable but I’m so sick of everyone saying what a professional hitter he is. Sure he’s hit .269 over his career but that isn’t a mandate to bat when you are below the Mendoza line. This isn’t a month in. We are halfway through the season.

I do remember that after he came over in '76 he did stink it up some. Completely forgot about that. It's been what.......40 years. wow....the memory gets hazy.

Yankees Batting...
M.S. : 7/7/2018 6:42 am : link

.236 on the road this year.

Kinda feels like the team took their Tampa Bat bats from late June to Toronto last night.

Throw in Sonny Gray and bada bing bada boom... two games behind the Red Sawx.
The Yankees are 7-10 when Gray starts
arniefez : 7/7/2018 6:44 am : link
and 49-19 when anyone else starts. Boone said last night they think he's still the best option they have. That needs to change by 7/31.
Didn’t watch the game
nygnyy274 : 7/7/2018 7:05 am : link
But 0-6 with RISP and saw Stanton at bat with bases loaded one out on Espn they broke down pitch by pitch. What an awful at bat he swung at ball four twice and looked at strike theee right down the pipe. And Neil Walker and Bird enough both hitless again. I saw rumors about Moustakas i pray they are true because this team needs another bat don’t care what anyone says and why is walker playing over drury what is this goddam obbsesion with walker

Last year mark feinsand said on f a n after the White Sox trade to get Frazier Kanle and Robertson that Cashmans first choice was walker and Addison Reed from the mets but Alderson did not want to help the Yankees so a few days later is when we made that trade with the White Sox. He said Cashman really liked walker lol. Could you imagain.

I'm not a fan of Walker in the utility role as he's the type of player who needs to play regularly. Given regular play and AB's he puts up decent power numbers and RBI's, plus is versatile and reliable in the field.

I think they went after him because they weren't sure Gleyber would be ready as early as he was or take the position by the throat and run with it.

Because of that Walker's been put into a utility role and he's not good at it. Toe does a great job at that but it's not easy for veteran guys who are used to playing regularly to be as effective when not playing every day. It might be halfway through the season for the team but as far as Walkers AB's go, he's more like a month or so in.

I think these next couple of weeks with Gleyber out is his last shot to show something. If he doesn't, then Toe is back when his family situation is taken care of. If Toe's not ready then Drury takes that role and hopefully they give Walker's spot to Frazier.
So Cash likes Walker more than Drury?
Jim in Hoboken : 7/7/2018 11:46 am : link
Walker has no role on this team, for the present or in the future. I have no idea why he’s taking ab’s from Drury. Drury hasn’t looked good either, but he is tradable if playing well.
To think Drury was the planned starter over Andujar this season.

I think Walker appeals to them because he's a switch hitter plus I think they see Drury as more of a 3B than a 2B and they feel more comfortable with Walker at 2B. I also think they feel if he gets these regular AB's while Gleyber is out, they'll either get what they expected out of him or know he's finished.

Look,I'm not disagreeing with you on Walker's role/non role on the team. I'm only offering up my opinion on what they think of him, and why they're thinking the way they are.

Thankfully but Gardy is still in there today starting vs the lefty and leading off. I don't know his numbers against Happ but I haven't been liking what I'm seeing from Gardy vs lefties. If he's got good numbers I can see him in there but if not, why isn't Frazier playing today?

Drury starting at 2B as well. I guess Walker and Drury are going to platoon at 2B while Gleyber is out.

I could single out about 20 overreactive posts from anyone but cmon already. They aren’t in first because Boston is on an insane win pace and so are the yanks. One loss in fricking July and some of you go ape shit.

Sonny gray cares. He’s just not any good. He can’t pitch in the Bronx because he’s a right handed pitcher that isnt good enough to deal with the hr dimensions in NY. Sky dome isn’t much easier if at all. Yanks aren’t panicking or sitting guys like gray before the halfway mark because they can’t panic. And they can’t act like a bunch of idiots.

That Boston is having an insanely good season. Would you have felt the same way last night if Boston was on a 90 win pace? I doubt it.

Yanks are having a terrific year. One pitching disappointment has been Gray and maybe shreve. Some injuries but nothing crippling although the Sanchez injury will hurt more than some believed. Romine isn’t a star catcher like Sanchez is despite the low average or passed balls.

I still think Boston has a rough stretch in them. Yanks just need to continue taking 2-3 every series.
