My movie,
HOW TO GROW YOUR OWN, will be playing at the Midway 9 in Forest Hills, NY, on August 10th (Friday) at 6PM as part of the
Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema. I'm really looking forward to it and I hope to see a lot of you there (after all, it's in NYC!).
p.s.--If you plan on going, the sooner you purchase tickets, the better (
click on link below). Besides the fact that it may actually sell out (the festival does a good job of promoting the movies and one "block" of shorts has already sold out), it could make a difference in the size of the theater that the multiplex chooses to play it.
Thanks for the support!

Keep an eye on the Charleston Music Hall. Cozy venue that also screens movies of interest. This summer they're running all of Wes Anderson's movies on various weekends. There is an Indy Film Fest during the year.

Until then, I wanted to rack up some official festival selections and awards, in the hopes that it will help my movie stand out on one of those platforms. It's already played the Cannabis Film Festival in Humboldt where it won the Judges Choice Award and the Lyons Film Festival in Colorado where it won the Audience Choice Award. The Kew Gardens Festival (in Forest Hills) offers up a variety of awards (and closes with a lavish awards gala) and hopefully I can win one of them. The festival is screening over 100 movies from August 3rd-12th of which 39 are in the narrative, feature length category.

yeah, Milton, it's tough out there. A close friend of mine made a documentary called Half the Picture that played at Sundance and a dozen or so other festivals, but only has a couple of theatrical bookings (New York, LA). Looking good for an Academy nomination which would jump start it, but who knows? I never recommend anybody get into this business looking to make a living. I tell them to play the Lotto instead.

As for its availability and when, I've been reluctant to agree to a distribution deal that includes no upfront money. In all likelihood that will ultimately be the case, but I'm still hopeful that I can land a deal at Netflix (I know, I know, my chances are not good, like one out of a hundred...or more like one out of a million).

Good luck with the film ... much success!!!!
I don't smoke pot (makes me paranoid) so obviously I don't grow my own .... but, if I didn't live in CA , I would be there.

It surely is a tough business. And all the new technology/platforms make it both easier and tougher at the same time if you're trying to make a living at it.
Exactly. It's easier(just rent an Alexa Mini and start shooting), but EVERYONE wants to make a film now-a-days and there are just so many outlets/viewers for them.
At the Lyons Film Festival there was a guy who came up to me afterward and said he originally wasn't interested in my movie because he thought it was going to be a stoner comedy, but he watched the trailer and it intrigued him enough that he gave it a shot and loved it. He wanted to know if there was any way I could send him a link so that his wife could see it, too. He said it was the best romantic comedy he'd seen in at least three or four years.
p.s.--I struggled with whether or not I should include my middle name. On the one hand, it's pretentious. On the other hand, it's funny!

I personally don't find ANY humor really in the stoner culture movies and the trailer isn't my cup of tea
It really isn't a stoner comedy, which is part of the problem when it comes to marketing it. It's a romantic comedy, so people who are expecting the zaniness of The Pineapple Express will be disappointed and the people who favor Neil Simon-style romantic comedies won't give it a chance because they think it's just another zany stoner comedy.

Literally the entire trailer focuses on the weed aspect of the movie. I don't get a romantic comedy vibe at all.
Again I want you to have incredible success with it and hope you become the next famous film writer.
Maybe the director and editing crew are doing you a disservice. The trailer is way more pineapple express than Sleepless in Seattle .
That's awesome that you got Jamie from Eurotrip and Rachel Heinemen from Curb Your Enthusiasm
Without looking it up, I had to ask is that did who holds the camera the brother from Eurotrip?
Still great stuff Milton!

I couldn’t disagree more. Not sure we’re watching the same trailer
I don’t want to ruin Milton’s thread, but I just hope everyone knows that TLG knows an agent in the NFL circles and in turn makes him “in the know” for all things football. We should bow down to him and thank whatever god you pray to that he blesses us with his presence on this site.

I got to tell MMC - that is a great name!
My mother wanted to give me options and figured if I didn't like Milton, my friends could call me Morty. Thanks, Mom!

You made the right choice Milton - it has a great ring to it and a nice rhythmic pattern (I am a drummer) 2-3-2.
Good luck!

p.s.--There's one gag in the movie that diehard Giants fans will especially appreciate. It gets a big laugh from people who aren't even football fans so I expect some of you to be falling out of your seat (because you'll get the inside joke within a joke).
