Giants 2018 Positional Breakdown: Linebackers - ( New Window )
Eric, it's awesome to be excited about the LB corps again

Thanks for the writeup.

One note, you have mentioned Jonathan Carter a few times towards the second half of the writeup; I think you may have meant Lorenzo Carter.

Ughhh... I even caught myself doing that and I still didn't correct it. Thanks.
A key question
njm : 7/9/2018 9:55 am : link
Can SOMEBODY in this LB corp cover the opponent's TE on a 3rd and 5 or 6? I don't recall it happening very often last year.

That's what Ogletree was brought in for.
Kareem Martin was a curious signing
Jay on the Island : 7/9/2018 10:23 am : link
His stats weren't impressive in Arizona but Bettcher absolutely loves this guy and he is an athletic former 3rd rounder. Will a change of scenery and a full time starting role allow Martin to break out and become a solid OLB or is he just the guy who does the dirty work?
The one concern at LB now
Jay on the Island : 7/9/2018 10:24 am : link
is the ILB depth. Goodson had several injuries last season and missed too much time. If he does that again that will weaken the group. As Eric said I fully expect the Giants to add a LB before the season starts to provide depth.

This is a great question and as mentioned, this is one big reason why the more athletic Ogletree is playing inside. It's also why I mention Goodson has to get better in that area. I think I read one review by Schmeelk saying that Carter looked pretty good in coverage.
Ogletree is a gigantic score.
mittenedman : 7/9/2018 11:07 am : link
It was a classic Dave Gettleman move picking up one of the true legit 3-down MIKE LB's in the NFL. Ogletree WAS one more of a 43WLB type coming out of UGA but has built himself into a true MLB because that's where he wants to play. This isn't a guy who moves inside on passing downs, he stays inside and he calls every play and check from the middle. He attacks the A gaps with blitzes. He's fast and physical and plays angry. He amps up his teammates and embraces the role of the MLB like nobody we've had since Antonio Pierce.

With all the hype surrounding the offense the I feel the Ogletree pickup is flying under the radar. We got a ringleader on D and there aren't many of these guys out there.
Positive Review on Linebackers

Eric, I always thought you tend to be superstitious - giving lesser reviews out of fear that a good review will jinx the Giants. Such a positive review is a good sign - you must be confident.

Looking at Lorenzo Carter from the draft review videos, he looks like an all around player. Able to set the edge, cover, and rush the passer, more than just a dominant pass rusher. With any luck, he will learn to get the passer when called upon to do so.

As for the '3-4'scheme history, I have distinctive recollection from the 80's of believing that the Giants really had to rush 5 to consistently pressure the passer.
We finally might have 1 or 2 guys
gmen9892 : 7/9/2018 12:15 pm : link
That can cover TE's and underneath guys in Ogeltree and Carter. Carter was even out covering slot receivers in space while playing at UGA, so that is a role he is used to. Much like the Offensive Line, this is far from a finished product, but this unit has some talent for the first time in years.

What worries me most is pass rush from the edges aside from OV. They desperately need someone from the Moss, Okwara, Williams trio to step up this year and be, at worst, a pass-rush specialist.
Great

review. We now have hope thanks to Gettleman and the FO. This is a two year rebuild, but they've made a great start.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like they are going to be bringing everyone from everywhere, including blitzes right up the inside gaps.
Besides OV

all I can see are question marks as to where this pass rush is coming from, we'll see, I hope they can be effective.
Hopefully, Carter
Pete in MD : 7/9/2018 2:29 pm : link
and/or Martin can show some long-term promise bc there's a very small chance Vernon is on the roster after this season.

Another angry guy. He and Hernandez should start a therapy group .... forget it. Let them play angry.

Seriously, I was thinking the same thing. He might be the best MLB we have had here since AP.

It is either Netflix or Amazon Prime who do a series called "All or Nothing ...." or something like that. I have seen 2 seasons. 1 was Harbaugh and the University of Michigan and the other was the season that the Rams fired Jeff Fisher. Ogletree was still with Rams .... seemed like 1 of those quiet (intense) leader types. Both seasons were very good (imho).
Was very happy getting Ogletree.....

I wonder if Romeo Okwara, Avery Moss, Jordan Williams,
will benefit playing LB spots especially rushing the passer .
I can't remember ever seeing Martin play but he must fit the
plan . If BJ stays healthy were gonna be a bitch to run on .
Carter my 2nd favorite pick of the draft . Kind of like Floyd
in size . I think he is gonna be a pleasant surprise us this
season . Been a long time since we could actually have the LB
corp be the strength of our Defense once again . Cheers !
Excited some about Ogletree out there
Jimmy Googs : 7/10/2018 1:42 am : link
and if Carter's game can be above average in the NFL. The rest, not so much.

You guys must be seeing things I don't about these LBs...
My 2 cent take is that we have a good starting group
SGMen : 7/11/2018 9:16 am : link
Our starters should be solid against the run as well as generating a bit of mayhem with blitzes from all sorts of angles.

We can not replace VERNON. I expect him to have his best professional season this year. I believe Ogletree will cover really well and be the defensive captain.

We clearly need rookie Carter to learn as the season goes and be a "player" by season's end. I don't expect him to start as a rookie but hey if he won outright in camp against a veteran like Martin all the power to him!

BJ Goodson can plug the run when healthy and he is also a "leader" and you need those kinds of guys to motivate the team.
