I’ve got a work trip at the end of the month in Indianapolis and have never visited before. I’ll be there during the week and will only be free at night so I’m looking for any recommendations for what to do or where to eat downtown only. I won’t have time to travel outside of the downtown area.
Night 1 I have the opportunity to go to an Indianapolis Indians baseball game which I will probably do. But the next 2 nights are open.
have the shrimp cocktail if you love horseradish

Looks more up my alley, I’ll probably check it out, thanks.
I had a couple other decent meals but not many. It's a pleasant enough downtown. I was really bored one time I was there for work so I walked up the canal to the USS Indianapolis memorial, which I thought was cool but not worth any kind of special trip.
But I imagine now you'll never put on a life jacket again.

Farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish lady, farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain...
2nd this recommendation!
For food the options have gotten better in the last 5 years. Some of my favorites downtown include:
Nada - good upscale healthy food
Bru Burger - Burger joint near Mass Ave but really good
Sullivan's Steakhouse - If I am getting a steak I actually prefer Sullivans to St. Elmo's
Mesh - Another local place on Mass Ave
Bazbeaux Pizza - my favorite local pizza place
As far as things to do it depends on your interests. You already mentioned the Indians game which is a pretty cool baseball stadium.
The Indy 500 museum is cool but that is in speedway. If you play golf there is a golf course that plays inside and outside of the 500 race track. It's a pretty cool experience.
The NCAA Hall of Champions was cool that last time I was there, but it has been a few years.
Bankers life field house is a cool basketball arena and you might be able to get WNBA tickets for cheap.
Mass Ave is the new trendy restaurant and bar scene in the downtown area. There are other as well but Mass Ave seems to be the new gathering point.
Let me know if you have any other questions, I work near downtown, but I have a 5 year old so we don't do as much downtown as we used to.
Anyway, we delivered the bomb.”
St Elmo's is a place living off its reputation from a couple decades ago. I begged a group last time I was there for the combine not to go, they went and thought it was just meh.
Mass Ave. has so many options to choose from you can rarely go wrong.
Some suggestions of places I've been that are great:
- Nada
- The Eagle
- Tinker Street
- Repeal
For steaks, The Library, Vida and Harry and Izzy's are all better than St. Elmo's.
-Slippery Noodle was a cool spot
-Mass Ave had some good restaurants.
-NCAA champions museum was cool but probably wouldn't go out of my way to see it.
- I expected the streets to be safer. Some sketchy people wandering around at night.
St Elmos is cool for the experience and the shrimp but the best steak in town I've had was at Prime 47.
For late night grub go to The Eagle and get some fried chicken...delicious and an awesome beer selection.
If the night is beautiful and you want a beer outside go to the Rathskeller...one of the best beer gardens I've ever been too and usually have live music
If you're more the cocktail type you've got the Ball and Biscuit (best cocktails in town) or Hotel Tango (distillery that makes all their own booze in a hundred something year old carriage house)
Ideal night starts at Hotel Tango for a cocktail (or two...or three), walk across the street to Bluebeard for dinner and then take an uber (since you'll likely be toasty by that point) to the Rathskeller or the Slippery Noodle for beers and some music (Rath if you want a beer garden, the Noodle if you are feeling some blues) then end the night with a plate full of fried chicken and mac n cheese at The Eagle
