NFT: BBI Guitarists - Line 6 Variax guitar

Anyone have any experience with the Variax? I've been reading about it and the technology is intriguing. From what I gather, with one guitar you can model several different models; and you can change tuning with a switch (step up/down, Drop D, Open G, etc etc).

With that and their modeling amps it seems like one could save a ton on equipment, etc but how good is the actual modeling?

Just curious to hear some anecdotes.
I'm not a big fan of modeling, especially of an instrument....

in my experience, it's not really convincing (except in effects but even that usually sounds like it has a digital "sheen" over it to my ears).

I guess my first question would be, what are you using it for? Recording direct to your laptop, might be good for that. Live use? I'd be skeptical.

For the price it's listed, I'd just buy a Telecaster and a Les Paul. You already have an acoustic. That covers a TON of bases.
Buy and American Fender guitar (Strat/Tele)

and a tube amp.
Forget about the modeling. Line 6 amps are a joke among many purists. I had one years back and did not like it - was a bad investment, traded it in within a week and bought a Blues Jr.
I have to imagine the Line 6 guitars have the same type of fake/digital sheen as described above.
I owned one

the Variax Standard. I didn't care for it. The sound is very modulated. You can tell its digital. I bought it because I had the Helix and it was supposed a fun and useful guitar to get the most out of the gear.

Fender made a guitar like it back a few years. The Fender VG Strat by Roland.

At least that is an American made strat. Its all gimmicks though. I attached a review of it. They can be had on Reverb and Guitar Center in the 600 to 700 dollar range.

I wanted a guitar that could do some acoustics and electric from the same guitar. I ended up buying a Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci JP6.

My opinion is stay away from the Variax.

I would still buy one of these over a Variax

and a Line 6 Spider IV which actually does a fairly good job of modeling.

I played around with one a few years back and contemplated buying it. It was on craigslist, and the price was right. It wasn't bad, although looking at a Strat-like guitar with no pickups in the usual places seemed kind of strange. In the particular model, all sounds were captured in the bridge. However, none of those modeled sounds were quite up to par with the originals. The flexibility to make any one of those sounds? Okay, fine, if you really need it... but how often do you need to do that? I'll take a plain old Strat, Les Paul, or Gretsch any day over the simulated sounds. FYI, there are a bunch of youtube videos out there comparing the different Variax modeled sounds to the originals, in case you're interested.
