Herb Johnson HB FA-CFL Saskatchewan 1954 NYG 1954 7-10-1928
McClure LI Herald: A New York Giant among us (2012)
“After playing at West Point, where the Cadets won 28 straight games before being upset by Navy in the 1950 season finale, Johnson went on to attend the University of Washington and starred for the Seattle Ramblers of the now-defunct Greater Northwest Football Association. He spent 1953 with the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, where he set five records, including one for the league’s longest punt return (109 yards), a mark that stood for 22 years.
In 1954, Johnson, who was known as a dominant force on both sides of the ball, spent a memorable season suiting up alongside legendary Giants like Frank Gifford, Eddie Price, Emlen Tunnell and Tom Landry. The team’s offensive coordinator was another legend in the making, Vince Lombardi.
Johnson finished third on the team in rushing, led the Giants in return yards and scored two touchdowns that season, including a 48-yard punt return for a score against the NFL champion Cleveland Browns.
After the ’54 season, Johnson knew it was time to put football behind him and concentrate on an engineering career. “I had played three years in high school, three years in college, a year in Canada and now a year with the Giants,” he said. “All those years had taken their toll on me. You hurt a lot on Monday morning.”

Brents Star News: Shay, with four Super Bowl rings, will be watching NFL playoffs (2018)
“Following his playing days, Shay served as a college scout for the Giants for 15 years. It was during this time that he won his Super Bowl rings.
Shay’s input was directly responsible for the Giants drafting such standouts as Harry Carson, Phil Sims, Michael Strahan and Lawrence Taylor. Simms was a two-time Super Bowl champion with the club (Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XXV) and Super Bowl MVP (Super Bowl XXI).”

I remember

Shay as an outstanding DT for the Falcons. I believe his career ended after he broke his leg, but not certain
It did
Defenderdawg : 7/10/2018 5:53 pm : link
He tried to come back in 1971 and couldn’t...

In 1970 the Giants rebuilt their interior with Shay and Jim Kanicki from Cleveland...in fact Kanicki not Ron Johnson was the key to the Homer Jones trade, however Shay’s broken leg and subsequent injuries to Kanicki meant by 1972 neither were on the roster.

Add to that the rest of the 1970 DL, DE’s Fred Dryer (traded after the 1971 season) and Bob Lurtsema (released during the 1971 season) and less than 2 years later all were gone...

From ‘64 on, I seem to remember mostly awful roster additions,
Big Blue '56 : 7/10/2018 6:02 pm : link
many of which consisted of over the hill vets who brought with them name recognition only, at least for the most part. But Shay and Kanicki were different. Shay was pretty young (mid 20s?) and Kanicki was pretty much in his prime at 29 or 30..I had high hopes for them, but as you pointed out, injuries took care of that hope
They traded for younger players who were reserves

1968 BAL LB Barry Brown 25 (Dennis Gaubatz, Mike Curtis, Don Shinnick)
