Not to overstate the importance of this one particular game, but Id argue that whether or not NYY add a pitcher, the performance of Tanaka from here out is the biggest determinant of how far this team can go.

I think that's fair. He and CC are the biggest variables. They were studs last post season. The offense should be better this time around, with Castro replaced by Torres and Headley/Frazier replaced by Andujar. Not to mention the addition of Stanton (who everyone should vote for btw).

Yanks have J.A. Happ near the top of their realistic rotation trade options (they dont see degrom or Thor as especially realistic) but to this point have found the asking price on Happ high
for regular season wins. I get that we want to win the division but Happ isnt even good enough to make me feel good about that.
YOu'd rather bank on Gray to turn it around?
Im assuming that frazier would be in this deal and if thats the case my answer would be no. Im enjoying this team and thats because of the young kids. Adding a career 4 ERA pitcher whos around 4.5 ERA for the season while giving up a piece of the future seems ludicrous to me. We can get Happs likely production elsewhere.
The alternative to not adding a SP is more SOnny Gray. He's likely the least popular guy on the team right now. PErsonally, I'm against any trade involving any prospect whose name I know. I expect we can get the help we need without any big names coming up. We're looking for bottom of the rotation help, not trades that would involve Frazier.
I agree re: Sheffield - I think I'd rather see what he's got before spending any chips on rentals/back end starters like Happ.
I'm a little wary of the walks, but the 2.53 ERA in SWB is good to see. Worst case, he might be able to give us a good lefty reliever out of the pen down the stretch.
is going to hold out for the best possible value but I can't see him not making a significant move for a SP. We won't be able to compete with Houston without 3 starters we can trust. At the moment we have 1.
There's no way he'd be the piece moved in a Happ trade.
It came from him being the next in line after Torres and Andujar of guys everyone will include in their starting offer packages. Why wouldnt the Blue Jays ask for him?
Happs fine for a mid or couple low level prospects but no thanks on anything more than that.

Well I can only speak for myself but I definitely trust CC and Tanaka come playoff time. Would I like to have a DeGrom or Bumgarner ahead of them? Sure but I don't see them being realistic available options.
I'd be happy with Haap or Hamels to get us through the rest of the regular season. Neither has great numbers but both have some pluses IMO. Haap has good numbers vs the Sox and we have ten games left with them, and Hamels has been there, so the bright lights shouldn't bother him like they do Sonny.
It's possible Cash has his eye on someone else totally off the radar and it wouldn't surprise me if he made a move like that. To quote our football threads....in Cash we trust.
11 up, 11 down against a guy with the 4th worst WHIP of any starter
The runner knocked the ball out. He's out of the line too. Wtf...
No question about that. To me that's where the home plate ump has to help the 1st base ump. The 1st base guys are trained to watch the bag for the runners foot and listen for the ball hitting the glove. No way he can watch the baseline and a runner making contact with a glove when he's watching the base and feet.
The Home plate ump is responsible for fair and foul balls until it reaches the base, so you'd think he'd be responsible for base runners out of the base line or making contact with a 1B glove.

Yep home plate umps are taught to get out from behind the plate on a play at first like that to help out in case there's a tag play there

Yeah and if he did he clearly missed it. Much like he's missing low balls out of the strike zone. At least Boone is letting him hear about those tonight. Nice field mics on the YES broadcast
I mean between Flash and Kenny what do they have 25 years in the majors? The rule is simple. You have to be in the act of taking the ball out of your glove for it to be a catch. Doesn't matter if you run 10 steps.
Bird is frustrating but I still would be willing to stick it out with him for a while - I think patience will be rewarded. Just let him keep playing. He'll find his groove. There was a time when the org was higher on Bird than Judge. I think they still are bullish on him and really do believe he'll come around. If he can stay healthy, I think he will too.

Rotation needed him. Hopefully he's got a good 2nd half ahead of him.
If TOR is asking for anything significant for Happ, I'd just hang up the phone. I think he'd be a nice add, but that's not a guy I'd overpay for.
I think there are going to be some lesser-mentioned guys who might emerge as better targets, but we'll see.

Do you want another Sonny Gray?
I feel the same way. I say bring up Sheffield.

He's looking like Cy Young against us so far tonight.
