NFT: Poison Ivy rash

nyjuggernaut2 : 7/10/2018 8:19 pm
Was in the woods behind my house on 4th of July in the early evening looking for some sticks to start a fire in our new fire pit. Woke up the next morning with poison ivy on my right wrist and up my arm a bit. Over the weekend some appeared on the back of my neck, and today some has showed up on my right calf and stomach.

I was told to clean all the clothes I had on and my sheets and towels, which I did over the weekend. No clue why it keeps popping up in random places still. I've been using this Cortizone-10 cream to deal with the itching but not sure how to stop the spreading. Haven't had poison ivy since I was a kid and wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with it recently and knows of any other creams out there that could help.
The randomness is normal for poison ivy..

i recommend that you do to one of those CVS walk in medical centers. They will prescribe something for you (that you can pickup right there) and it will feel better within 24 hours and cleared up soon after that
It probably has gotten into your bloodstream
steve in ky : 7/10/2018 8:28 pm : link
and that why it is spreading. Maybe something like Benadryl might help with that.

Poison ivy in the bloodstream?
bhill410 : 7/10/2018 8:30 pm : link
Yikes I didn’t know that was a thing.

More likely you had the oil on your hand and you didn’t realize it and touched those other places. Go to the doctor if it’s really bad and they will give you a steroid for inflammation which will help. Damage is done now so to speak
Go to the doctor and get a prescription for a steroid cream

Yikes I didn't realize it could get in your bloodstream. I have an urgent care around the corner from me, maybe I'll go in the morning before work and get a prescription
You're gonna need an ocean

of cal-a-mine lotion...:)
Get yourself some Tecnu

Especially if you know that you have it in your backyard.

Stuff really works. Another option (but definitely more expensive) is Zanfel.

Ivy is often treated with a short course of prednisone pills. That's what worked for me.
I second the CVS minute clinic.
Ryan : 7/10/2018 8:51 pm : link
They’ll send you home with a tapered dose of prednisone that will knock it out fast. Only catch is if you have any spots near your eyes they’ll make you go to your family Dr.

Yup. Sounds like it's become systemic poison ivy, with your body breaking out in places the ivy didn't touch. Prednisone is often prescribed for a week to deal with it.

Second the recommendation of Tecnu. In conjuction, I use Cortaid Poison Ivy Removal Scrub when I shower. For really bad cases (which it sounds like in your case) go to the doctor and they will likely give you a steroid shot along with the prednisone pop pack.
In the south it’s everywhere
FranknWeezer : 7/10/2018 9:23 pm : link
and I can almost get it just by looking at it. Badly allergic to it.

I quit trying cortisone and creams. Straight to the minor med clinic for a shot of Decadron to dry it up. Works every time.

Thankfully, I haven't had to deal with any in over a year. There are certain areas that I know where it is, and like you, I get it just looking at it. There is some that is growing on my neighbor's side of the fence. I lay down the Round-Up concentrate and it keeps it in check from migrating to my side.

Rub the tops off with an emery board, pour bleach or peroxide on it, wait about an hour then shower and it's gone tomorrow.
I used to get poison ivy really bad.
CaLLaHaN : 7/10/2018 11:15 pm : link
Got it in my eye once was swollen for a week. It was Very nasty.

I used to go to my mom's pool the chlorine did wonders on it. Dried it out and usually clears up in a few days after.
Can't help with the spreading
Eman11 : 7/11/2018 6:52 am : link
But if the itching is really bad take an Aveeno oatmeal bath. That stuff works wonders for itchy rashes.

Just be sure to give your tub a good rinse before you or someone else showers as the residue is slippery as hell.
I just had the exact same thing happen--

I'm 56 and had ever had poison ivy. Amazing since I was always in the woods of upstate NY when I was a kid. I truly didn't think I could get it. I was pulling vines near my Virginia house and got it heavily up my right arm and now it's also spread to my neck. I've been using Benadryl pills and topical cream to deal with it. It itches a MF'er, but I think I'm through the worst of it. Navy medical probably wouldn't have wanted to spend the money on Prednisone so I didn't bother going.

poison ivy does NOT spread through your bloodstream
oghwga : 7/11/2018 7:49 am : link
The oil is very strong and does not wash off easily. You can get the initial oil on one spot and then spread it to other spots by touch and it will continue to appear.

There are specialty soaps you should use even after the first symptoms appear.
Because of climate change/warmer temps, it is thought to be stronger and more toxic than ever.

It can release a mist when damaged which is like some scary sci fi movie nonsense. I hate the stuff. Had a small patch limited to my elbow 3 weeks ago and it still itches.
I am one of those people that has extreme reactions to Poison Ivy
Beer Man : 7/11/2018 8:17 am : link
I always have to go to the doctor when I get it. I have been injected with steroids for it a couple of times, and been prescribe steroid tablets on other times. The last time I got it, both arms looked like they were being eaten up with leprosy. I had to keep them wrapped so not to gross anyone out.
Zanfel
Juice921 : 7/11/2018 8:51 am : link
Its expensive, but it works. You can get it at CVS over the counter.
I have it also - been using
giant24 : 7/11/2018 9:26 am : link
apple cider vinegar and tecnu spray to relieve the itching. Usually takes a couple weeks to clear. The pool and ocean also help dry it out.

Wouldn't that be masochistic?

Not to dilute the sheer genius of the solution, however. Brilliant. Better even than alcohol, crazy glue, paper towel and masking tape on cuts in the garage so you can keep working.
I get it worse evey year in MA
Moondawg : 7/11/2018 10:47 am : link
I work in the woods around my house a lot. If I understand it correctly, as an allergy it gets worse with more exposure.
I love those redheads.

I don't recall ever hearing about poison ivy in NYC
Matt M. : 7/11/2018 9:53 pm : link
This year, it is popping up all over the place. How did it suddenly get everywhere.
