sources: yankees have made a strong offer for manny machado. haven't heard they are the favorite, but they are clearly a player at this point. @Ken_Rosenthal said there was "increased" interest from NYY a couple days ago.
I really wouldn't, honestly. Plus, if Machado is insistent on playing SS, what happens to Didi and who plays 3B? He's arb eligible next year and then he's a FA, so I guess they could move him if they really wanted to but I'm just not sure it makes sense to waste a chip like Andujar on a rental.
I really think if the Yankees are going to make a significant move, it should be for a starter. Just get Gleyber and Gary back and there's plenty of firepower in the lineup. Machado doesn't seem necessary to me.
he wants to be paid as much as possible, so thats how hes angling for it. He really isnt a good SS and Im guessing his position suddenly wont matter once he signs somehwhere.
I don't think it's noise, I think he wants to play SS. He's played there all year this year. I don't think he'll refuse to play if someone asks him to play 3B - which is really where he should play - but I think that's where he'd prefer to play.
Didi is better, so if Machado is traded here, he's going to have to play 3B and I doubt he'll complain.
I just don't think it's the right move to make. I guess we'll find out what the "strong offer" was soon enough.
- Good news first... Gleyber and Judge are both good with RISP.
- Bad news... Six of the team's regulars are batting .231 or lower with RISP.
- Gardy is batting .250, but with a putrid OPS of less than .700
- Stanton leads the team in hits, but bats 88(!) points lower with RISP as opposed to with the bases empty.
- Didi and Andujar are also batting at least 75 points lower with RISP.
- Sanchez and Hicks have low BAs with RISP, but still solid OPS.
(As a comparison, Boston has 4 of the AL's top 9 OPS hitters with RISP.)
I really dislike when I see other people speculate out of whole cloth:
There is something about the Machado talk that makes me suspect the fine hand of Levine
There is something about that jerk that thinks putting pressure on existing players and Cashman to perform produces results.
"hey Hal, I got a call from xxx. We just swapped ideas. Man I think we are close this year. And if we pick up attendance even 1500 a game it pays for itself. xxx must have leaked it to the papers"
Everyone who says "trade Andujar for a starter" is assuming there is a deal for a good starter worth making. I've said from the beginning that I'm not sure there is one. If the best they can do it shore up the back end like they did with Jaime Garcia last year, they can do that with guys they're going to lose to Rule V anyway.
Forget the pitching - why are we not pounding scrub pitchers ?

Exactly. Everyone is talking about our pitching, our hitting especially with RISP is not good. Hopefully Bird is in a groove now.
No negative Nancies in this thread please. We need to give Sonny some rope. Dude is signed to infinity, so we need him to do well. Come on Sonny!

No. You trade Andujar for a pitcher and just sign Machado in the offseason.

I tend to agree. I wonder what Cash is thinking.

They would absolutely have to offer Devers and they won't do that.
crappy baserunning saved the double play...I presume you are talking about Gardner.
Actually it was a crappy fielding play, that was an easy DP.
C'mon, guys, you're better than that!
And I still think Tanaka was more unlucky than not pitching great yesterday. I think he looked really good.
