NFT: Jersey Burbs - Hoboken Work

yupbjac27 : 7/13/2018 11:58 am
Potentially making a work move and would be working out of Hoboken. While I like Hoboken, I've done the city living thing and would like to move out to the burbs. Looking for some input from the folks who live in Jersey or have similar commutes. Really dont want to be on a train for more than an hour (preferably 30-45 mins). We are in our early 30's and would still being look for some sort of "downtown" scene. Know this is a bit open ended but any thoughts or prior experience would be helpful
A buddy I played college football with grew up in Glen Rock

Great town and school district, always had a blast when I visited him.

I believe that would be in the 35-45 minute commute range you are looking for. Unsure what type of price range you are looking at as far as houses.
Not sure your family situation or budget...

I’m partial to Summit (so is Eli) but Millburn/Short Hills, Madison, Westfield, and Morristown might be nice options.
for downtown scene

and direct access to Hoboken I'd say Ridgewood, Summit, Rutherford are places to look if you can afford it.

you'll want to look

for towns that have a direct line to Hoboken. Bergen, Essex, Union and Morris county all are great options. There are probably 2-3 towns in each area that will provide you with a "downtown" feel of restaurant and shops. Im a realtor in one of the counties mentioned and will be happy to talk off BBI, if you are interested.

add Maplewood and Montclair to this list
If you want to go South

I'd look at the Red Bank area.

Access to NJ Transit, a nice little downtown feel plus close to the beach, Asbury music, and all the Shore area has to offer. Good schools in Red Bank as well if you have kids or are thinking about it.
I'd agree with

Summit, Short Hills, Ridgewood, Montclair, but keep in mind they are congested and popular.

I'd go to Red Bank or Asbury Park areas nearing the shore myself, but the rail commute won't fit your budget.
The key is your price range

There are a lot of commuting options that get you to Hoboken in 30-45 minutes. Ridgewood has the best restaurant scene outside of Manhattan in the area but it's very expensive. Great schools but you pay for them. Glen Rock is the next town down. Both are on TWO NJ transit lines to Hoboken. Rutherford is closer and less expensive but doesn't have the same downtown. Montclair, Summit and Glen Ridge are on a different train line but would fit the bill as well.
Red Bank/AP

Way too south for that kind of commute to Hoboken and I think only one direct line a day on the NJCL. Would definitely have to go west. Morristown is probably the furthest west you'd want to go at about an hour drive.

Loved it growing up; right on the train line and can't be beat (if you can swing the property tax).

.

Or Madison, Basking Ridge, Warren, Berkeley Heights, Fairfield, Cedar Grove, Morris Plains, Parsippany, And more all different price points , nice towns and all under 30 mins from
Hoboken w/o traffic, under 1 hour with traffic usually
Okay just re read , take my advice

You will love both Basking Ridge, and Denville

They both have what your looking for, Chatham also.

All have train stations , Denville is a little far tho by train (45 mins to an hour I'd guess by train)
All good recommendatiosn

Many of these locales don't have the "downtown" area that OP requested.

A lot of variables go into the search...
- What is your budget? (+$1mm or <$1mm, property taxes, etc)
- Do you have or plan to have kids?
- Do you value train lines exclusive to Hoboken or a variety of lines which also lead to NYC?
- How much value do you place on a walkable and active downtown?
- Do you prefer the "hipster" or "old money" vibe (obviously a generalization but a discernible vibe picked up in many of these locales)?

Which is why I refined it to Denville, Basking Ridge and Chatham, the triangle of happiness
Also, Consider Ramsey NJ. Bigtime Giants land and so wholesome
DennyInDenville : 7/13/2018 11:04 pm : link
Ramsey > the whole list imo besides Basking Ridge (the best one)

Ramsey is awesome though, it's so damn north jersey culture I love it.
