7.14.18 Brooks NFL.com: Ranking top 5 play-caller tandems; Pats SHOULD NOT trade Gronk “5) Pat Shurmur and James Bettcher, New York Giants: Despite being dismissed as an afterthought in the NFC East, observers should pay close attention to the Giants due to the coaches' collective ability to elevate the performance of their players. Shurmur is a superb tactician with a solid reputation for simplifying the game for his quarterback and elevating the play of his team's primary playmakers through his play designs. Last season, he helped Case Keenum play at an MVP level and made Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen the league's most feared 1-2 punch on the perimeter as the primary play designer in Minnesota. With Eli Manning, a two-time Super Bowl MVP, at quarterback and a star-studded supporting cast that includes one of the most explosive playmakers in the game (Odell Beckham, Jr.) and three emerging stars (Evan Engram, Sterling Shepard and Saquon Barkley), we could see Shurmur put together the NFL's top offense in his first season on the job. Defensively, Bettcher doesn't get enough credit for his exceptional work as the defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals from 2015 to '17. He not only presided over a defense that finished no lower than sixth overall in each of his three seasons at the helm, but he did it utilizing a blitz-heavy scheme that befuddled opponents with exotic five- and six-man pressures from every angle. Considering the success guys like Chandler Jones (NFL sack leader in 2017), Tyrann Mathieu and Patrick Peterson enjoyed in the system, it is easy to envision the Giants' top players -- Olivier Vernon, Landon Collins and Janoris Jenkins -- stepping up their respective games in a scheme that sets them up to make more splash plays in 2018. With that in mind, the Giants' coordinators snag a spot on this list in anticipation of a remarkable turnaround this season.” |
Stats, stats, stats! Always stats. CK was playing at an MVP level, imv. He greatly helped bring Minny to the “final four.”
I'm stoked for this season.
I guess you can’t see the forest through the trees. Keenum was a 3rd string QB. Shurmur did a hell of a job with that offense considering the OL wasn’t that good and they lost Cook for the year early on.
This article illustrates a key point that many are overlooking. Shurmur does a great job with QBs and is one of the better offensive minds in the game. Bechter is one of the top up and coming defensive minds in the game. Both coaches are going to have more talent to work with than they’ve had in prior jobs.
Love that we have a week of live action vs another team....a must imo in preseason.
If the offensive line holds we are a playoff team and likely a very exciting one at that.
Bettcher's blitz schemes are much better suited for the modern game too. I love Spags but his scheme was JJ's who designed it to attack 5- and 7-step drops. The concepts did not seamlessly translate to today's quick game.
Bettcher doesn't do the delays and the rat coverage with his DLinemen. He gets his blitzers up on the line and uses players with similar skillsets to make the OL guess which one's blitzing or dropping. In AZ it was Honey Badger he'd use in an attacking position off the slot. He does not have a player like HB this year but he may use Landon Collins there.
In any event, Bettcher's blitzes are designed to disrupt the quick passing game much better than Spags were.
