What a mess. There's nowhere to go but up, right?

Pretty alarming when you see those special teams stats all listed like that, isn't it?
Last year's special teams
mittenedman : 7/16/2018 9:09 am : link
were the worst I've ever seen on the Giants. Pretty much sucked in all aspects of the game.

I think they've made big upgrades in coaching and support players, but the kickers still worry me. I'll assume the new P is good, but Rosas was terrible last year and got worse as the year progressed. And I'm not wild about giving him the job if he performs well in preseason either.

He looked great in preseason last year too but showed he does not have the consistency or accuracy needed at the pro level.
I will never understand how Tom Quinn
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 7/16/2018 9:35 am : link
managed to hold on to his job year in and year out. I don't like to see people fired but we never had a plus year while he was the coordinator. Even with starters on the field.
Outside of the poor performance of Rosas and Wing

The utter lack of quality depth on the team last year showed it's ugly head on special teams. There was nothing there at all.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Hunter Sharp
ZGiants98 : 7/16/2018 10:02 am : link
Returned kicks. I also think with Gallman in a reduced role now he might be an option.
I was glad to read that Chase Blackburn got a coaching job.
Ira : 7/16/2018 10:05 am : link
I always liked him as a Giant. He wasn't a top talent, but found a way to compete. Good luck to him in his coaching career.

I wondered about that too. He got a few touches on specials last year, but they seemed to defer to Kalif. But if Hunter makes it and Kalif doesn't...

is what scares me the most right now with the Giants. (Not counting injury)

I hope new coaching/philosophy/schemes makes a difference for us but man, I can't shake the nervousness that we will lose some games this year because we suck on ST.

Anyone have confidence right now that in a tight game we hit the kick? Or don't shank the punt?

Praying i'm wrong.

Here's to hope!

Another great write up.

"Nowhere to go but up, right"?

That is how I see this unit this year: just improved. I have no idea how much better but I can't imagine it being that bad again.

Looks like

Blair Walsh, Mike Nugent, and Nick Novak would be the only vet kickers still out there if Rosas has a tough camp.

Yeah, the Giants' seeming indifference or blind spot to special teams that seems to persist through coaching and front office changes is downright bizarre.

I think when you combine poor talent on the back end of the roster and a coach that can't get the ST group to operate as an efficient UNIT (as one) you are doomed.

The good news like many have pointed out is they made an effort to bring in quality special team guys and hired a different coach. (although this guy was here with Quinn)

I still can't shake the feeling like they are going to let us down again. It's what happens when you spend the majority of a decade watching shitty Specials.

Hoping for the best.
As much as I didn't like Harris for a variety of reasons
Matt M. : 7/16/2018 1:11 pm : link
I also don't like Raymond. If you are on the roster for one primary reason and you don't do that well, then you shouldn't have a roster spot.
This is the most concerning part of the team IMO......
Simms11 : 7/16/2018 2:57 pm : link
Punter will probably give us an average effort. Kicker is very questionable right now and it may come down to a pressure kick in a few games this year. Could be the difference between making the playoffs or not?! The vet kickers available are also no great shakes either. Return game is anyone's guess. I think Latimer or Sharp will get most of the PR reps and possibly a guy like Gallman on KR.
Well, any kicker cut....the Giants will have 1st crack at them
George from PA : 7/16/2018 4:16 pm : link
The Browns have a good kicker I believe and no need to change
I believe getting
terz22 : 7/16/2018 6:44 pm : link
A new punter was one of the most underrated moves of the offseason. Wing was horrible last year.

Agreed.
Seems like a few experienced Special Teamers are being inserted
Jimmy Googs : 7/17/2018 7:10 am : link
but we have heard that before too. Maybe the coaches now can properly lead these units to win the ST game more often than we lose.

Have no specifics on why or if Quinn was a major factor in these units consistently struggling but with it hitting rock bottom last year, that change was good if only for change sake.

Cannot believe he could actually last this long, but the glorified franchise has its faults on loyalty too. Many on BBI also supported Quinn over the years with constant excuses for his poor units and memories of several big plays in the NFCC in 2011...
Barkley
Bluesbreaker : 7/17/2018 2:36 pm : link
Do you think there gonna put him out there on Kick offs ?
I like the guys they picked up like Thomas I was hoping
they would take a flyer on Henderson from Pitt .
You got to figure its much to tempting to put Barkley
back there . Maybe not every Kick off but we really
don't have much to choose from .
It'd be football malpratice
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 7/17/2018 8:28 pm : link
not to bring someone in to push Rosas.
Although Quinn wasn’t very good, the real problem was lack of depth
Ivan15 : 7/18/2018 9:45 am : link
And injuries.

Injuries caused backups to become starters and players who would not have made the roster became special team regulars.

In good years when there were few injuries, special teams were better, even in spite of Quinn.

Regarding Wing, I can’t figure that out. Must be a mental thing or changes he made in his approach, like a pro golfer trying to tweak his swing.
We have given up on a few rookie kickers,
Doomster : 7/18/2018 10:31 am : link
that have developed elsewhere.....

But Rojas should have some competition in camp.....

I agree, but I'm also sure they will.

Koehn is his competition. Now Koehn has never kicked a FG in the NFL but he will be given every opportunity to win the job. I am not worried about the PK spot right now because the Giants will sign a solid veteran after final cuts are made if Rosas struggles. The Giants are clearly high on this kid so hopefully he will reward them for their faith in him. I personally would hate to see the Giants lose another Boswell or McManus.
