NFT: Home Run Derby...Are you interested?

superspynyg : 7/16/2018 8:35 am
I am not. I am going to watch the AS game but the HRD is not what it used to be.

Plus many of the best hitters like Judge, Martinez, Machado are not doing it. And I can understand why. It can really throw off your hitting.

I guess I will finally finish up Homeland.
No.

This is the deadest sports time of the year. Absolutely brutal week.
Mildly

I think all sports all-star games should be replaced with skills competitions/displays.

So much more interesting.

In the NHL I like the skills competitions - fastest skater, hardest shot, accurate shot, penalty shot/one on ones

in the NBA I like the slam dunk contest and 3-point contest

and I loved when Sehorn was in the NFL best athlete contest or whatever it was called.

I'd focus more on skills, not sure what baseball can offer, but the game itself is brutal - even though the MLB all-star game is the most compelling of the major sports.

Seeing deGrom strike out the side on 10 pitches was cool to see (as a Mets fan). and there have been some iconic moments, but generally the game is a big snooze.
Slowly but surely I can see this turning into the NBA Slam Dunk

contest where younger players, not yet stars are competing. Too many injuries or chance thereof, for players to compete anymore. It's why Judge, who last year felt obligated as a rookie to compete(even if his shoulder wasn't 100%),announced in Spring Training he wasn't doing it this year. I only think Harper is doing it because it's in his home ball park & I think he felt the pressure to compete(from MLB/Nationals?)!
Nope.

Waiting on Friday for Yankees to start kicking ass in the 2nd half.
Usually I'm really into it
Stu11 : 7/16/2018 9:10 am : link
and last year the kids and the wife got super into it but this year it took a real hit. The kids have been talking about who will do it for weeks, but as everyone dropped out especially all the Yanks, it kind of bummed us out. I think we'll watch but it has nowhere near the juice last year's had. I knew Judge wouldn't do it, I was hoping Stanton would. I think if he made the game he might have, but once he didn't he didn't want to bother going.
No, not this year.
Keith : 7/16/2018 9:20 am : link
Only because of the players in it. Last year was a very exciting group and I looked forward to watching it. It didn't disappoint. This years group is as blah as I can remember. Next year, when there are more exciting players(including Yankees), I'm sure most on bbi will have interest again.
There was an article on ESPN
JayBinQueens : 7/16/2018 9:21 am : link
saying they should take a page out of the NHL's book.

Make 4 teams and have the 1st two teams play the first 3 inning, the 2nd two teams play the 2nd 3 inning and then the winners of both play the final 3 innings.

If it's tied after three, you bring in rules like start with a man on 2nd etc that have been talked about being brought to baseball already
Harper vs. Freeman is the only real interesting part
dpinzow : 7/16/2018 9:25 am : link
to see if Harper wins (and wins the rest of the contest)
I may have it on the background...
Anando : 7/16/2018 9:28 am : link
But not really watching. No yankees = no interest.
There is nothing else on TV...
mac attack : 7/16/2018 11:09 am : link
Why not watch some dingers?

There's always that crowd that says "No stars are in it this year" but at the same time will complain that MLB doesnt market young talent. Maybe it's on you to open your eyes?

Agreed. And as far as I'm concerned only bad things can happen during the HRD. Thankfully Judge isn't competing.

The one minor saving grace this year is the World Lacrosse Games. The US-Canada pool game was excellent, with the US winning 11-10 yesterday.
I'll watch. Because it's the Home Run Derby.
Beezer : 7/16/2018 11:53 am : link
It's better than it was. And I'll learn some guys, since I don't follow MLB across the league like I once did. Don't have time for fantasy baseball these days. Man, that was a huge help, keeping on top of who's who.
It's fun in a stadium like Fenway or other park with nooks or oddities
JonC : 7/16/2018 11:57 am : link
where the moon shots can leave the stadium, land on a distant roof, clear Lansdowne St, or some historic spot like Yankee or Dodger Stadium.
Not really. Honestly, if I watch it, I'd probably enjoy it.
Mad Mike : 7/16/2018 12:04 pm : link
Seeing guys hit blast after blast, especially if a particular matchup is close, is fun. But it's not something I'd go out of my way to watch, and I probably won't bother to tune in. I tuned in last year only because of Judge and Sanchez, but I enjoyed it more than I expected to (and not just because Judge won).
Not in the slightest
Matt M. : 7/16/2018 12:42 pm : link
Never was really interested in the derby before and I've grown less interested with the new format.
Did last year
mitch300 : 7/16/2018 1:02 pm : link
due to Judge and Sanchez in it. I won't watch this year. BTW only 1 player is from the A.L. this year.
.
arcarsenal : 7/16/2018 1:04 pm : link
I'll probably watch it just because of the lack of alternatives - but I really don't have much interest at all.
yep
RasputinPrime : 7/16/2018 1:23 pm : link
but not enamored with the hitters competing in the derby this year. I'd at least like to read that Gallo was invited and turned down the offer.

Bring out the mashers because the best clearly aren't interested.
The All-Star break really screwed me
aimrocky : 7/16/2018 1:49 pm : link
although it's my own fault... I'm traveling to LA tomorrow for work, and haven't been out there in 20 years. I was hoping to catch a Dodger game (or Angels if the Dodgers weren't home). Of course, after I planned and booked the trip, I find out it's the week of the All-Star break. Oh well, maybe I'll get to see Dodger Stadium when I visit in another 20 years.
Nope
UConn4523 : 7/16/2018 1:54 pm : link
was last year because of Judge vs Stanton but I have no interest. Will be watching a movie.
Baseball?

Canada - Iroquois on ESPNU right now if you're into lacrosse.
Not in the slightest

I think I'll watch Star Trek - The Next Generation reruns instead.
