NFT: I'll be hearing on film festival nominations tonight

Milton : 7/16/2018 5:13 pm
I know it's silly but I can't seem to focus on anything else today. I'm personally competing against 38 other feature length movies in the category of Narrative Feature and against all other movies (100+) in the categories of Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Others in my cast and crew will be competing in the Best Actor and Supporting Actor categories as well as for editing, cinematography, production design, and sound. I'm disappointed they don't have an award for best musical score because my composer did a helluva job.

In any case, wish me luck!

The Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema. It runs from Aug 3-12. My movie, How to Grow Your Own, is playing at the UA Midway 9 in Forest Hills on 8/10 (a Friday) at 6pm.
Good luck,

Nominated for best screenplay, best picture editing, and best sound editing. I'm still in competition for the Audience Choice award.
Congrats Milton.

Perhaps not what you preferred, but still some very nice recognition.
Yes, indeed,

I know you may be dissappointed, but that is still a tremendous achievement.

Quick question for you. Looking up the details on IMDB about your movie, I see that it was made in 2015. Is it normal for independent films to have to wait 2+ years to get nominations such as this?
Congratulations Milton!

What was the name of your movie again?

Appreciate those nominations; they're like getting into the playoffs; you could have been 3-13.
And those nominations are nothing minor; the judges/committee must have been impressed me to have chosen them.
Wish you well on selection night.
Congrats

It doesn't work that way. Basically each festival has its own set of rules for submitting to it. The big dogs--Sundance, Cannes, Toronto, and the like--all require that the movie was completed within the last year (or year and a half) and that it be a world premiere. As you work your way down the hierarchy of festivals, the requirements for submission are less and less strict. In the case of the Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema, the major requirement was that it hadn't been commercially screened in the US, or available for video or internet distribution prior to August 3, 2018 and that it had completed production within 2015-2018.

The selection committee than chooses from among the movies that were submitted, accepting enough movies to fill out their festival, and rejecting the rest. Separate from the selection committee is the "jury" usually made up of five to eight people working in television and/or movies. The jury watches only the movies that have been officially selected to be in the festival and from those they nominate five or so in a variety of categories. That same jury will then award a winner in each category to be announced at the close of the festival.

Not all festivals have a nomination process or give a variety of awards. When I played the Cannabis Film Festival in Humboldt there was only a jury prize for best picture and an audience choice award (which went to a movie that stuffed the ballot box). When I played the Lyons Film Festival in Colorado there wasn't even a jury, just the audience choice award, which we won.

It's nice but my goals were loftier, not so much for my own ego, but for marketing purposes. To go with your football analogy, I look at it like the NFL Draft, where if you're not playing Division 1 football, you damn well better be dominating at the Division 2 level if you hope to get drafted.

I'm still excited about the festival, it's gonna be a lot of fun.
I'm reminded of this scene from the Mary Tyler Moore Show...

For those of us on BBI that want to see the movie but don't live near where the festival is being held, how can we?

What is your next step, trying to get it on Amazon, Netflix, Hulu or streamed some other method?

Something along those lines. I'll follow up the festival with a big push for a distribution deal and then commit to whoever makes the best offer. I'd prefer for it to be on a subscription site like Netflix rather than a pay per play site like iTunes, but I haven't done nearly enough due diligence on each of the platforms just yet. One way or another I will make it available to the general public in September or October.
Good Luck

Yeah, I'll be at the screening. I don't know about a meet and greet, but there may be an after-party, so any BBI'ers who come to the movie should definitely seek me out and say hello.
