cjac : 7/17/2018 4:27 pm
Cooks was entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Money hasn't been announced yet.
From the Rams
cjac : 7/17/2018 4:28 pm : link
left that out
8 different WRs from the 2014 draft class have now gotten extensions

or new free agent contracts. One notable exception...
5 yrs 80 mill

Don’t know guarantees

#Rams Salary Cap Space by Year:
2018: $2.2 million

2019: ~$56 mil (including Cooks)
-Top FA: Donald, Suh, Joyner
-Top FA: Saffold, Havenstein

2020: ~ $137 mil (37 under contract)
-Top FA: Goff, Gurley, Brockers
-Top FA: Talib, Whitworth

2019 should be okay. 2020 could get ugly
that makes Cooks
cjac : 7/17/2018 4:45 pm : link
the 5th highest paid WR in the NFL right now at 16mm a year. Antonio Brown is the highest at 17mm a year
Odell is going to get 20 million per
Vanzetti : 7/17/2018 4:49 pm : link
something like 5/110 with half guaranteed
OBJ's next !

The Rams have approximately 56 million in cap space 2019 and 137 in 2020? Why would 2020 be troubling then? I understand that there are a lot of guys they have to sign but they can get by initially because those contracts are always backloaded. They will definitely lose some guys too. I personally don't like the approach they have taken. They started off great with having good drafts and spending money wisely. I did not like what they did this offseason for the long term. Short term it may pay off but it too Washington Redskinish to me or Cowboyish or Eagleish like when they had their super team that fell flat on their face. They brought in a bunch of bad locker room guys with an extremely young coach. Not sure how that is going to work out long term.

Why are there 2 separate lines for top FA?
Odell

why more than Brown?
At the risk of sounding too much like GoTerps...

Looks like the rest of the league hasn't learned much from the Giants experiences with top WR. Not meant as a slight of GoTerps (he's one it my favorite BBIers), and I'm okay with signing OBJ to an extension because I think he's that special. Having said that Nicks and Cruz are recent examples of highly productive WR who were one injury away from losing what makes them special. This is just one of the lessons from our recent experience. The other is that big production from the position is not as unique or rare at other positions.

Neither Nicks or Cruz are as good as OBJr.

Uh, because that’s how it works? The next guy signing is the highest paid, until the next guy...see the contract Matt Ryan signed as further evidence. He’s the highest paid, until the next big QB signs an extension

Agree, that's why I said I would pay OBJ. Here's generational and a true Superstar/cornerstone of a franchise type player while the others weren't.

But Cooks isn't OBJ either. He's more in the category of the others I mentioned.

Any player in the nfl lives in that context. They're all one injury away from that state. For an off the cuff analogy, they don't price cars based on the idea that you could get in an accident at the first intersection after leaving the lot. And I do realize there's a salary cap. The cap in a sport riddled with billionaires is dumb.
I never really understood the gushing over Cooks.

Talented player, great skill set. But nothing close to a dominant receiver.

And to add, he knocked himself out of the SB after making not 1 but 2 game altering, boneheaded plays. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to football IQ. Rams kinda had no choice but to pay him, but I otherwise hate this deal.
We should let Odell walk.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 7/17/2018 8:12 pm : link
Total headcase. Proposes to kicking nets. Has weird celebrations. Not worth the aggravation. He's a bad, bad dude.
5 year 110 and 1/2 guaranteed
Chip : 7/17/2018 8:50 pm : link
is hopefully a little high but is going to be close. Do you sign him and if he wants more do you let him go. I don't think the Giants should be to thrilled with the Cooks contract being close to Browns contract. We can still tag him next season and possibly the season after that.
Shockey, Smith, Nicks, Cruz, Manningham....

They most definitely are.....I am sure the Giants want to see how sound that ankle is in preseason, or even during the season, before finalizing an offer.....

It's all about the guaranteed money! You can sign a huge contract, but if the guaranteed money is not there, and it's back ended, what is it really worth?

Giants would gladly give OBj 20M per for 5 years......with no guaranteed money.....think he would sign? Absolutely not!

And the Giants have been stung by injuries to their receivers.......is it any wonder, they want to protect themselves?

And is the signing of Barkley, a different road the NY Football Giants could go down?

He's the Matt Cassell of WRs.
My guess is OBJ gets between 18-19 per,

5 years, 40 guaranteed. Otherwise, play out the year and franchise him as often as you can (if contract can’t be agreed to), as long as he’s producing..

He makes good money from endorsements, BUT, if he isn’t on the field and producing, those endorsements will shrink, if not disappear, imo
Barkley helps to keep Beckham, IMO
UConn4523 : 7/18/2018 11:08 am : link
Giants just spent 1st and 2nd round equity to greatly improve the offense for the short and long term. Beckham is vital to that plan, he’s not a replaceable player.

I won’t bother getting caught up in the economics, we can afford him. Eli comes off the books next season, and then it’s on to paying for cheap QB play for a while. We can also move Vernon if he doesn’t bounce back. The Giants are incredibly flexible capwise.

Oh, they’re keeping OBJ regardless of what financial deal they ultimately work out. I think their bigger concern is whether or not his ankle is at 100%..The money they’ll find. I was never concerned with that. The Ankle is the key and whether or not it might factor into less “OBJ” type production. Supposedly he’s been cleared to practice
Thats exceptional money for a guy that really hasn't been
Brown Recluse : 7/18/2018 11:43 am : link
exceptional.

Its pretty amazing to think about how Lawrence Taylor was the highest paid defensive player in the league in 1990 and he only made 1.6 million per year. Times sure have changed, for better or worse.

I don’t think there’s much question about his ankle
UConn4523 : 7/18/2018 11:55 am : link
maybe by fans, but I think they know if he has any limitations by now.
That's a lot of money to shell out to a guy
figgy2989 : 7/18/2018 12:36 pm : link
Who I don't even consider to be a top 10 at his position in the NFL.

What does this mean for Donald? They are going to have to shell out a lot of dough for him after next year.

Forget the fans, I agree with that. I just would love to know whether or not he’s been assessed as “good as new,” or they expect him to be..I haven’t read anything about his ankle beyond his being cleared to practice during minicamp. We don’t know if they’ve seen him go full out with cutting, stopping and starting, etc..I just haven’t read whether or not that’s a factor AT ALL
