NFT: Who really are the most popular athletes on NY teams?

giantsFC : 7/18/2018 8:58 am
Article in the post. I was surprised by the rankings some. And very surprised by some random names on it.

What does everyone think?

Personally expected Beckham 1, Barkley now 2. Then maybe Porzingis followed by Manning. I get Eli as 1, bc he is such a marketable personality. But I find Judge extremely high. People under the age of 40 barley follow baseball.
Biggest ny sports stars - ( New Window )
Right now it's probably

Beckham, Porzingis, Manning and Judge.

Barkley and Torres coming quickly.
You can't understand why Judge is ranked so high?
figgy2989 : 7/18/2018 9:07 am : link
Coming off of a ROY season, winning the HR derby and one of the more marketable personalities playing for the most popular team in the biggest market.

What you should be surprised at is Hank still being ranked so high. Give Barkley time and I am sure if he performs well, he will be up there in no time.
15. Sam Darnold lol
Coach Red Beaulieu : 7/18/2018 9:12 am : link
Makes you realize, again, what a crap franchise the Jets are.
Can't argue with the top-6
Anakim : 7/18/2018 9:14 am : link
But David Villa and Tina Charles? I would not know who they are if I was in the same room as them.

I would put Mats Zuccarello on the list.
Judge being high is no surprise.
GiantGolfer : 7/18/2018 9:15 am : link
He’ll probably be #1 if the Yankees win it all this year. He’s everythIng right about baseball. Plays the game hard, likeable, humble.
Very cute how they

add soccer, WNBA and Mets players.

OBJ is #1 on that list. The dude is arguably the most popular and polarizing player in all of the NFL.

injury is a factor. If he had another monstrous year last year he would be number 1.
Eli at the top followed by Judge makes sense
BBelle21 : 7/18/2018 10:14 am : link
They’re both extremely likable athletes. Eli’s rings, HOF career and the outpouring of love he received for the benching was eye opening. Easily puts him at the top. If he has a strong year or actually wins another SB for the city, watch out. Odell may be a bit too polarizing to take the top spot right now, as magnetic as he is.
I don't want
Pete in MD : 7/18/2018 11:10 am : link
to sound like a dick but is Tina Charles really a household name in New York? I had never heard of her until reading that article but I also don't live in the area. I understand that they wanted to include a female athlete and her story sounds nice (grew up in the area, went to the best college program around, now plays for her hometown professional team) but the article is literally a list of the most popular athletes and it doesn't include some pretty big names.

There's a quote in her write-up that says, “She’s one of the most accomplished and talented players in New York that nobody knows about..." That's a little different from "most popular."
Who the hell is
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 7/18/2018 11:14 am : link
Tina Charles?
How on earth is Judge a surprise?
UConn4523 : 7/18/2018 11:28 am : link
You can make the argument he’s more famous than the best player in baseball, so it makes sense that he’s highly though of in NY. My ranking would look like this:

Beckham
Manning
Judge
Barkley
Porzingis but that will likely change since I think he sits the year, making way for Torres or deGromm (if he’s not traded)
The surprise to me is Stanton that high
njm : 7/18/2018 11:30 am : link
Barkley will rise once he actually plays a few games for the Giants. And Judge is no surprise whatsoever.
No love for Chad Wheeler?
Milton : 7/18/2018 11:38 am : link
Big surprise!
I'm surprised Eli is #1
Matt M. : 7/18/2018 12:52 pm : link
Top 5? Fine. But even after the renewed love from the benching last year, there is no way he is the most popular NY athlete.

Say what you will about the Mets this year they're a disaster. But when the Islanders won Cups they still couldn't topple the Rangers in popularity

Funny thing is when the Mets actually win, they are as popular or perhaps even more popular than the Yankees.

I know this is 28 years old but it shows what the Mets being good through just 1984-1990 did.

Wouldn’t be a normal day in the world without a Yankee fan taking a shot at the Mets.

Ho hum...
Home Run hitters have always been popular with fans

No real surprise there
Ereck Flowers
RodneyHamp : 7/18/2018 4:46 pm : link
Should be on the list above any MLS or WNBA player.

Mets fans are a bunch of good weather bandwagoners.

Popular doesn't necessarily mean "loved". Eli *might* be even more polarizing than Beckham at this point in his career.

Mets fans are actually some of the more loyal, they have to be because they have had to endure so many bad years.

As far as reasons behind their popularity when good. I have always heard mentioned that NY had a lot of National League rooted fans as the reason.

The Mets had the advantage of replacing two popular baseball teams in many fans' eyes. Many fans of the Dodgers and Giants immediately became fans when the team was first formed.

The Islanders never had that. They had to extract a fan base from an area that already had an existing team. When they were in the middle of their dynasty they had still only been playing for 10 years.

Can’t even pick judge out of a lineup of faces. He is awesome but No baseball player should be in the top 10 for the reasons it’s not a national sport anymore IMO. I get he is huge with yanKees fans and baseball junkies but I don’t even know what he looks like and I follow baseball and do fantasy baseball which introduces me to all players.

As for the WNBA and the other weird entries. That is the media world we live in, I don’t have a clue who they are myself. The WNBA is below at least 25 sports on my lost of things to watch.
