Saints are signing former Pats and Giants RB Shane Vereen, source says.

Wish him well. Will be interesting to see how Payton/Brees deploy him since he was mostly a nonfactor with NYG.
He was injured a lot
UConn4523 : 7/18/2018 11:20 am : link
he wasn’t a non factor when healthy, to be fair. He had his best season of his career with us.
Kind of duplicitous
pjcas18 : 7/18/2018 11:24 am : link
(but lesser) with Kamara, or maybe insurance while Ingram is suspended.

A friend of mine who is a Pats fan, nailed Vereen when the Giants signed him.

Good hands, good route runner, decent blocker, can run in a pinch, but the next guy he makes miss will be the first guy he makes miss.
Assuming he’s actually healthy,

I look for big receiving numbers working with Brees

IF Kamara gets injured because he will almost never see the field imo. He is Kamara insurance.
I thought he would be a good signing
Matt in SGS : 7/18/2018 11:32 am : link
but he never really worked out. I had hoped they would use him similar to Tony Galbreath or Dave Meggett, but the Giants didn't do that much with him. And then he started fumbling (which he never did with the Pats) and got hurt (also something that didn't happen).

Payton knows how to use his running backs, he will find a spot for Vereen there.
In that case, agreed

This will come back to haunt the Giants.
It is definitely a little unexpected.
robbieballs2003 : 7/18/2018 11:35 am : link
The Saints have been working out backs closer in style to Ingram because of the suspension but never really pulled the trigger. So, I am surprised to see them go with a back similar to Kamara. I guess they feel they have the between the tackles RBs on the roster already.
Why do some assume he will be on the Saints Roster on Week 1?
ZogZerg : 7/18/2018 12:02 pm : link
Even if he is, I doubt he will contribute much.
Why?
johnnyb : 7/18/2018 12:06 pm : link
Kamara is more than capable. I realize Ingram is suspended for four games. Maybe Vereen provides a bit of protection?
Does that increase the possibility of our getting a comp pick?

Yes, unless the Saints re-sign Jonathan Vilma.
When

I first read the title of the thread ,I thought it said the Giants sign him. I'm like WTF. LOL
he's washed up
GiantsFan84 : 7/18/2018 4:18 pm : link
doubt he makes the team. maybe he hangs around while ingram is suspended but that would be about it

he also won't see the field as kamara is their receiving back.

You’re friend called it on Vereen. Did he break one tackle the whole time he played here? His feet would start moving 100 mph like a cartoon character but he would just drop before he could get going

+1 Curious if this offsets the supposed 1 mill we're off from getting a 4th rounder?
He doesn't suck..
prdave73 : 7/18/2018 6:31 pm : link
Giants just didn't utilize him properly imo. Bad OC and HC unfortunately. Injuries happen.
I believe the date
pjcas18 : 7/18/2018 6:37 pm : link
has passed where players signed impact comp picks formulas.

Thanks. That's lame.
That

Swing and a miss pal, those are going to Kamara and TEs, Vereen is cooked. This is veteran in camp trying to hang on type of signing.
Um. I wish him well, but . . .

Not really. Ingram is suspended the first 4 games. Payton likes to move Kamara around...slot, out wide, etc. The idea is to add another receiving weapon and spell Kamara w the carries. It’s the best possible landing spot for Vereen. Will he produce? Who knows but it looks like that’s the plan.
Why is this pinned?

Vereen looked very tentative and fragile last season
JonC : 7/19/2018 9:03 am : link
and the NO turf eats up bodies, he's a part-timer at best based on the past two seasons.
I mean
giantsFC : 7/19/2018 12:58 pm : link
If the giants didn’t overpay for him by about 50% he would have been an awesome versatile depth player. But nope, an expensive waste of space.
I doubt Vereen makes the team. I wouldn't be surprised if he
fredgbrown : 7/19/2018 1:08 pm : link
one of the last cuts. If he makes it I would expect him to be hurt after a few games.
Vereen
BigBluesman : 7/20/2018 3:44 pm : link
Was as disappointing specifically as the McAdoo era was generally.
His injury in 2016 had a big effect on the offense’s struggles
Jimmy Googs : 7/20/2018 6:25 pm : link
as it looked like he and Eli were doing some good things early on.

In 2017 he just looked like he was done...
