NFT: Has anyone rewatched Ren and Stimpy as an adult?

BigBlueDownTheShore : 7/18/2018 3:18 pm
I'm mid 30s, and I can remember watching it when I was younger. I have seen somethings from Youtube, and caught an episode a while ago on TV somewhere. I can't believe I was allowed to watch some of that stuff. Some of what they did is absolutely insane.
I never liked it as a kid
UConn4523 : 7/18/2018 3:23 pm : link
I’ve seen it recently and I agree, I’m kinda surprised so many my age watched it growing up in the 90s. It was cartoon shock, haha.
sometimes I think it's more of the hidden humor

Victorious aired from 2010 - 2013.

is from Nickelodeon. One of Nickelodeon's big rainmakers, Dan Schneider, is alleged to be a serial pedophile / child molester and he would constantly write in jokes that sexualized the young girls on the shows.
The creator is a weirdo
Hsilwek92 : 7/18/2018 3:36 pm : link
He’s been accused of multiple counts of sexual misconduct with underage women. One of whom he had living with him. Real creeper.

Explains a lot when it comes to the shows Ariana Grande was in back in the day. Lots of inappropriate scenes.

Correct. Even going back to the days of Amanda Bynes.
Never thought anything of it back in the day

was Ricky Smith from Better off Dead (with John Cusack).

And when I learned about him it made sense why I'd cringe listening to my kids watch iCarly and other NICK shows just from listening to some of the language/innuendo.

Just don't wee on the electric fence.

I remember when my kid was watching the Amanda show about 15 years ago and they had her dressed up like a sexy librarian who kept telling everyone "I'm looking for Amanda please. Yes. I need to find Amanda please." As if nobody would ever figure out what that sounds like. I can imagine little "jokes" like that probably make the executives at Nick cream their pants. Sick twisted shit for a kid's show.

Dude. That's just the way it was back then.

No one thought twice about saying crazy shit. Hard to believe the world is this weird haha

No wonder she turned out the way she did
Funny that when I mentioned how...
Daniel in Kentucky : 7/19/2018 10:18 am : link
...repulsive and disgusting Family Guy is I’m attacked with slings and arrows.

And that show is much much worse.

Our grandparents would be proud of how progressive we’ve become.

I would never attack someone for not liking something.

I find Family Guy hilarious.

But I think there is a major difference between a show like Family Guy that has zero subtlety about their crass humor - and it's intended for an adult audience - and the Nickelodeon shows that were for kids and you find out after the fact exploited children with subtlety and innuendo for the whims of a pedophile director.

Wait, what? Completely different demographics and also, Family Guy isn't apologetic for what it is. Everyone knows it's edgy and crude. The show isn't meant for kids.

.....?????

Family Guy is not a kid's show at all. It's not on a children's network, and it airs at night, in primetime.

Really off base comment. What's next, complaining about South Park? Or the alcohol and drug use in Bojack Horseman?

Anyway, I grew up with Nick (born in 89 so I went through the heydey of Nicktoons) and Ren & Stimpy always just seemed too gross for me. I did, however, love Rocko's Modern Life. Still one of my favorite cartoons and lots of innuendo when I go back and watch it today (though they were things I'd never pick up on as a kid).
I remeber
Pete in MD : 7/19/2018 12:20 pm : link
sort of being entertained by Ren and Stimpy as a teenager. I also remember it being very repetitive with the same clips being shown over and over in different episodes. I mean, Log is funny the first few times but it doesn't need to be in every other episode.

It was always a little off the wall. I had never heard of the creator being a creep before this thread.

Well. Care to explain or are you just going to make useless comments like that?

The only thing I remember parents being outraged by in the 80s was Halloween candy and we even made jokes.

I think the 90s was that last breath of fresh air before cartoons used to "Worry about teaching kids lessons"

Then again there was the Bevis and but these era lol
Kids have a different mind though
Mr. Nickels : 7/20/2018 1:00 am : link
For example: 2 80s classics came out when I was a kid

Ghostbusters and Police Acadamey

When Ray is getting a blowjob from the ghost I just laughed at him making a "funny face"

Or When Lassard is getting blown under the podium in Police Academy was just funny again from his faces and changing his speech tone.

Pretty obvious Amanda Bynes and Ariana Grande were abused sadly. He better not have touched Victoria!

but watched a lot of Nick with my brothers and sisters who were younger than me. I was just entering high school when Rugrats came out and thought the show was still well written.

Ren and Stimpy was a bit like Rockos Modern Life. That show had a ton of sexual innuendo to it, when Rockos eyes popped out of his head, the doctor grabbed the bottom of them and told him to caugh lol like his balls
Loved it as a young kid.
BigBlue in Keys : 7/20/2018 8:09 am : link
I must have been 8 or 9 yrs old when it came out. I can remember belly laughing with my dad when that show came on. I think the adult themed stuff went right over my head. Lots of cartoons throw stuff in for the adults to get. It was a wacky and gross show. Maybe I loved it because I had never seen anything like it before.

Here's a clip I just watched a few weeks ago and it had my pops cracking up too. I'm not even sure what is exactly funny about it, falls more into the stupid category, but it had me laughing like I did as a kid. I don't expect many people to like it but I'll link it for the few that will.

I remember that. Haha, loved Rocko's Modern Life. Great show and yeah, a lot of nuances that I didn't pick up until later in life.
Ya’ll are silly. It first came out on MTV’s liquid television

with Aeon Flux and other adult cartoons. Was aimed at older teenagers- aired around midnights followed by The Young Ones. I actually was very surprised that it was later on Nick- definitely a strange choice, but I was in college by then and I pretty much thought they edited more of the racy stuff out.
