Good get for CLE - if they get Miller back healthy, their pen should get much better. Allen has struggled, though. Having a bit of an anomalous year. They'll need him to get back on track.
The Indians won't end up with a great regular season record but are going to be a tough out in the playoffs. I'd put them at a coin flip vs NYY or BOS and slight dogs to HOU in a best of 5.
American League playoffs are gonna be a bloodbath.
Some people yesterday were saying "no way Machado would sign with the Padres over the Yankees" I don't know, money talks, so first and foremost the $$$ have to be the same.
And SD has the weather advantage.

And this is pre-trade I believe.

Mejias bat is no joke, but they really soured on him as an everyday Cather and were working the early part of the season on making him a LF, which by most accounts wasnt going great.
Felt like there was some writing on the wall that Mejia was going end up as a DH who could catch 1-2x per week. Surprised to see that it was a NL team buying him, but the bat is definitely MLB ready.
Cleveland sound like they were really annoyed with Mejia.
They have wanted him to play the OF so they can call him up this year and have him play. He keeps saying he is a catcher. Cleveland keeps telling him they know but if he wants to play in the majors this year they need him in the OF. Supposedly there was something lost in translation. They called him up before the all star break so they got a look at him. They must have been really annoyed to ship him off because they were really banking on his bat in their lineup.
They will now have 10 players among the Top 100 Prospects list including the No. 2 prospect in the game. This is a 2012 Royals/2015 Cubs type of farm system at this point.
huge boost for Cleveland. Every damn contender in the AL besides the Yanks needs bullpen arms. Was hoping we'd maybe block teams by getting Hand ourselves, but that was a pipe dream due to his cost in a trade. will be interesting to see if Boston or Houston make a run at Iglesias on Cinci.

I could make the argument that NY needs bullpen help too although that is nitpicking.

Well, if NYY needs bullpen help, every team in the majors does - the Yanks have the best pen in baseball right now.
I think a starter is the most important. But I'd like to see Sheffield get a shot before wasting assets on someone like Happ or Hamels - neither of whom I'm at all enamored with.

Just because it is the best in baseball doesnt mean they cannot improve upon it. The Yanks agree too because they have looked into adding a guy like Britton. But it is also why I said it is nitpicking.
I read that Allen has been shaky this year so there
is an outside chance Hand gets a shot at some point. Also, Allen and Miller are FAs at the end of the year so maybe Hand is their closer of the future.
Their top 2 prospects (from what I know) are Chavis (Suspended for PED's) and Groome (TJS), so I'd see if they'd trade Groome for Familia. He'd fit in in the Mets.
The Yanks pursuing someone like Britton would probably be as much for their own pen as it would be to keep him away from Boston or Houston's.
Britton may not be the same pitcher he once was but hes still an enormous upgrade over Shreve. They really could use a tough lefty out of the pen. And give Shreve a one way ticket to the moon.

Yep, could really use a lefty.
Britton only has had 2 bad outings this year - otherwise he's been perfect. Hasn't allowed a run since June 27th and has thrown 7 scoreless since.
His ERA is sort of inflated because of that crappy appearance he had against ATL that made his ERA jump from 0.00 to 7.71 in one shot. He's been working it back down since.
He's still a really good reliever and would be a great get for us. If you only need your SP to go 5 in the postseason, it sort of reduces the overwhelming need to acquire another one.
and try and solve the SP problem from within with a guy like Sheffield. Heck maybe even try Sheffield out as the lefty out of the pen down the stretch like we did with Joba in '07.

Shreve would never see the light of day in a postseason game, let alone a really important regular season game. They have so much depth in the bullpen that they don't really need to trade for another one. They also have so much swing and miss ability with their right-handers that they don't really need a lefty either. It would make them even better, but they don't really need one.
The Padres add one of the best young catcher prospects in the game. Their farm system could be the best in baseball by the end of the year once Acuna, Soroka, Fried, and Gohara officially graduate.
but I'm surprised he got dealt at all given his bounce back. This is the 2nd deadline the Indians shopped him, so considering he's so close to the big leagues now and has high potential at a premium position, maybe that's a little bit of a red flag in and of itself.
I do agree with PJ that this is probably good for Familia's value. He should bring back a top 100 prospect from somebody even though he's a rental. He's easily been one of the top 5ish relievers in the game over the last 4 or 5 years and while this year isn't his best, he's still near the top of the league in most categories. Of relievers with 15 saves or more he's one of 7 whose ERA and FIP are both under 3. Hand's numbers are slightly worse but similar and obviously he has the extra years of control.
I could not disagree more. Finishing ahead of the Red Sox is huge. If youre a wild card team, you have to go with Severino to win the
1st playoff game. That means you have CC, assuming hes healthy to start the next round. Are you confident with that (or one of the other current starters)? The team does not have the luxury of hoping a kid like Sheffield can do the job like they need. They need someone like deGrom and theyll probably have to overpay because he could be the difference between a 1 game playoff or going deep in the playoffs. I think Cashmsn wants to see in the next week or 2 how much of a lead the Red Sox have before making a move
My point was that, given similar offers, Machado would end up signing with the Yankees. Or almost anyone else, for that matter, since they're a hapless franchise that has been below .500 in all but 14 of their 49 seasons. So, in order to sign with the Padres, they'd have to blow everyone else out of the water as Seattle did with Cano.....which seems highly unlikely.
I wonder if the Yankees will go aggressively for him
Machado is not good defensively at SS and will likely move back to 3B with whoever signs him. The Yankees are set at 3B with Andujar. The Yankees may decide to go hard for SP help and begin to lock up some of their young players long term. There are will be quite a few teams willing to spend big in free agency also.
It would give the Yankees in 2018 a five man rotation of...
1. Severino
2. Syndergaard
3. Tanaka
4. Sabathia
5. German
In 2019 the Yankees make Patrick Corbin their #1 free agent target and you have a starting rotation of...
1. Severino
2. Syndergaard
3. Corbin
4. Tanaka
5. German/Abreu/Montgomery/Sabathia/someone else?
No matter what the offer is, Yankee fans will say its too much to give up for X. And Mets fans will automatically say it isnt enough. 100% of the time, thats the outcome, regardless of the names being thrown out
is 25 years old, and under contract or controlled for 3 and a half more years.
that offer is not unreasonable, but I wouldn't trade Syndergaard without a Moncada/Torres level prospect.
Think about it the Yankees arguably got a better return for a rental on Chapman or even Miller than what you're proposing for 25 year old Thor with 3.5 years left under contract.

thank you but pass.
I know he was younger than anyone in that offer but at the time, while highly regarded, Torres wasn't a top 5 prospect in all of baseball. MLB.com had him at #26 for example. I would think the Yankees would have to include Florial though who is closer to what Torres was then.

Complete deal, per sources: Hand and Cimber from #Padres to #Indians for Mejia.
The Indians are a heavyweight in their own right; this is virtually the same team that was in the World Series in 2016 and won 22 in a row last year

that's a pretty stacked farm

though he is a rental, so I'm not saying he should get anywhere near the same return, but he should be in higher demand now.
In many stats Familia compares favorably to Hand

until he takes less money from the Yankees to not join the Padres it's not going to happen.
99.9% of the time, money talks, and players go to the highest bidder, whether it's the Yankees or the Royals or the Padres.
it's just never the Padres, so the point is moot and usually unprovable.
