NFT: Advice on going to the “new” Yankee Stadium

Beezer : 7/19/2018 11:31 am
My son and I are planning a day trip down to see the Mets and Yankees this weekend. Just wanted to hear from some of the BBI veterans who have been there, with any solid advice on parking, traffic coming in, anything we should see or avoid. Our first time to the “new” stadium.

Much appreciated, all.
Advice?
figgy2989 : 7/19/2018 11:35 am : link
Unless you plan on tailgating, I would drive down as far as you can and hop on the train/subway. Getting in and out of the stadium can be a nightmare.

Plus, I think all the garages are about $30 to park. You can do a round trip on the train/subway and still come out ahead.

Where are you staying?

If NYC, just take the subway (4 train)
Don't go

I have been once and I really never want to go again. The experience blows compared to the old stadium.
the subway

(we call it train) literally opens right onto the stadium and is a short ride from Manhattan. No brainer.
Ignore the above comment

Stadium is great - wide walkways, clean, and has great food.

As others are suggesting, don't drive. Take the train (there are multiple which go there), including Metro North.

Grab some Lobel's with your son
We’re driving down in the morning,

From the mosholu parkway, the mosholu parkway stop should be easy for parking, and then it's just a few stops on the 4 to the stadium.
if you know where to park

it's really not that bad getting in and out of the stadium, particularly on a weekend.

I always park at the Bronx terminal market garage

Coming from upstate, arrive nice and early. I drive in with the kids multiple times a year from Rockland if you go in early its no problem at all. Take the GW Bridge, back way over the University ave bridge. get up to Jerome Ave/turns into River Ave. Park at one of the outdoor lots on River Ave about 3 or 4 blocks north of the Stadium. 15-20$ easy in and out. If its a Friday night/Sat. 4pm or Sat 7pm game gates 6 and 8 open up 3 hours before the game. Otherwise the gates open 1 1/2 hours before the game. Like I said, you arrive early its not bad at all getting in.

I park on Arthur Avenue and take a cab, or Uber, to the stadium and back. Easier in and out, and a good meal either before or after the game.
otherwise depending on where you are coming from upstate
Stu11 : 7/19/2018 12:46 pm : link
you can take Metro North. Park there, very easy getting in, only probem is after the games they only run local trains that stop at every stop and you can wait at the Stadium station for up to 30-45 minutes for a train depending on where you are going. I took Metro North from Tarrytown for a few years with the kids and it was great getting in on an express, but getting home took forever. Honestly like Mook and I said if you plan it out right driving is no big deal at all.
I think I'll spring for parking ... we can hoof it a bit.
Beezer : 7/19/2018 1:03 pm : link
We're heading down for the matinee Saturday so we'll leave nice and early. Thanks Stu ... and all.

We did a couple games at CitiField the opening weekend against the Cards - stayed in Queens Chinatown and took the 7. Was a great weekend. We'll also be heading up to Fenway (first time for us both, at that ballpark) for the Mets-Saux in September. We can usually only do a couple games due to our crazy schedules ... this weekend is more of a "hey, wanna see about tickets in the Bronx?" thing. We've not been to a Subway Series game, either, so bonus.

So the Mets suck. Eh, whatever. When don't they? lol

I almost choose that as my monthly garage for my car.
I don't know if it's the best option
JonC : 7/19/2018 1:29 pm : link
but I usually hop exit 6, head towards the stadium and bang the left into the multi-level parking structure. ~$40 and feels like the quickest escape back onto the Deegan unless they hose you with the post-game traffic pattern.

It's much easier than the old configuration.

have a couple options in the $50-60 range ...

400s, behind the plate or either side, but high up. Or, OF bleachers.

In the new Yankee Stadium, does it elevate similarly to the old stadium? I sat high up in the old park and it was still decent ... stayed relatively close to the field.
Is street parking doable anymore?
steve in ky : 7/19/2018 1:51 pm : link
It's been a long time but I used to always be able to find a spot over towards the Grand Concourse and then it was just a short walk cutting through that small park to the stadium.

Over River Ave lot says $17 ... about a 0.5 m. walk. Couple others on River Ave in the $20 range, similar distance. Sounds like a decent compromise.

It's pretty similar - if you liked those seats in the old stadium, I think you'll like them in this one too.
Cool. Thanks Mike.

right above the Mets bullpen. Might get a different look this game.
It's a beautiful -- and imposing stadium

Take the extra time to be able to walk the concourses -- it's pretty amazing.

As far as I know (3 or 4 yankee games a year), it's getting harder to leave bags anywhere close to the stadium, so try to travel light!

Enjoy it! Nothing beats family time at a great ballpark!
And check out the musuem on the second floor

Thanks all. Appreciate the input.

Went with 400s, grandstand infield.

Now, hoping for no rain.

It's located on the main level, near Gate 6. Even as a Mets fan, I really appreciated the history of all the autographed baseballs. Not to mention all their championship rings on display.

Me too. It's $25, covered parking with lots of people around. I usually park right by the entrance of the garage. Its like a 5 min walk to the stadium.

For a day game, parking can be limited due to metered parking. That said, I have gotten there early enough before a Sat. day game and parked on the street a few blocks away. If you want to avoid that, you can use Park Whiz to pre-pay for a lot. There are some cheap ones available (~$15), but they will be full or a much higher rate if you wait until you arrive on game day.

I'm taking my boys to our 1 game this year next weekend. I was thinking out loud about what food I can bring in and my younger son (8) says, "why do you need food? We'll be at Yankee Stadium." The cost is the reason, but I didn't get into it with him.

Agree 100%, but I still go because of my boys. We usually go once a year when I find a great deal, maybe twice if we score free tickets somehow. I'm taking them next weekend because I got decent (300 level) seats using a $15 promotion.

The new stadium is higher up. The 300 and 400 level seats are the equivalent of the Upper Tier in the old Stadium (300s are the upper boxes and 400s are the upper reserves), but they are definitely higher than their previous counterparts.
if your coming from jersey, definitely drive in

The drive in from jersey is easy , just add 30-60 mins for traffic
Thanks, all.

We had a great day. Took a bit longer going down with detours effing things up in and around Fort Lee. Easy out after the game. And we parked across the street from the stadium. They raped me on price but I went for the ease.

Spent too much on some decent food and a few drinks. Solid fare.

Sat in 419, row 7. Seats were fine. We were up there but we’ve been all over ballparks and really aren’t picky. Being at a major league stadium, it’s hard to make us unhappy. Now that my son is old enough, it’s a nice perk to have a beer with my son at a ballgame.

The Mets sucked, but it was still a fun way to end it, with things getting so tight. (Why in the fuck didn’t Cespedes punch-hit in the ninth? Holy crap.)

I think the Matz experiment needs to be over. Either Lugo or Gsellman look to be better bets to me as potential starters. Deal Matz and be done. He is what he is. A 4-8 pitcher with a 4-plus ERA.

A great day!

Oh. And so think Chapman just threw another ball.

I DO prefer CitiField, and not just because I’m a Mets fan. Just a more inviting atmosphere, IMO. No knock on the new Yankee Stadium. Really cool place.
