NFT: Plant based diet, recipes and ideas?

trueblueinpw : 7/19/2018 2:33 pm
Been thinking about cutting down on meat in my diet. Not ready to go all in veggie but thought I might start with breakfast and lunch and few dinners. Any of you have some good ideas for meals or websites with that kind of information? Did a Google, of course, but thought there might be some better information filtered here by the BBI experts.

almond milk. You can basically use that as a substitute to milk in any recipe. Chocolate pudding, etc etc They even have a coffee creamer.

down on meat while increasing veggies is to follow the 50/25/25 plate rule for your meals (50% of your plate should be filled with veggies, 25% carb, 25% protein). so you aren't abandoning meat entirely but ensuring a good ratio to ensure you are getting the right vitamins, nutrients.

useg veggie mince instead of beef in a chili recipe you enjoy

there is an ottawa company called farm boy that makes an amazing lemon ginger oil salad dressing with no other added ingredients and preservatives - takes your salad game up to a new level.

a colleague of mine recently had an extremely painful kidney stone attack and he feels it is likely because he is a big meat eater, so this is something that has also crossed my mind lately.

smoothie in am...yogurt n fruit for lunch...salad for dinner.

I've been doing that for 15 years or so. I'm not a veg as I will eat anything when I go out...just no meat or chicken at home.

yeah, I do that, but I pile the protein a lot higher
Just moderate everything
DC Gmen Fan : 7/19/2018 3:46 pm : link
todays produce (unless organic) is sprayed with so much crap (and often the soil is not as nutrient dense) that you rarely get the full benefits anymore. (Unless you can find locally organic grown).

Farm raised seafood is crap for the most part.

So why not enjoy the pleasure of eating good meat and just do it in moderation. Take your normal serving size and cut it in half.

It hasn't been bad and I feel better than I ever have. Mexican is one of the easiest things to replicate. I also do a grilled veggie sandwich which is really good which I will find a recipe for and post it later. I'm not a fan of processed plant substitutes. I think a good black bean burger is better than the "beyond meat" burger as it's not trying to be something else. Bowls are another easy option that are really filling.

We aren't strictly plant based. I will make pizza once a week and use a little cheese on that. Every couple weeks I will make sushi rolls and I will add one tuna roll to the veggie rolls. However, most weeks we don't eat any animal products.
my tip
giantfan2000 : 7/19/2018 3:52 pm : link
just start out by eating a salad for lunch

it is great way to start to implement plant based diet

salad can be filling and you can eat more if you hungry without worrying

Pasta with veggies and cheese
Ira : 7/19/2018 4:22 pm : link
1) Cook some pasta - maybe fusilli or ziti or something about that size and some veggies.
2) Then saute them together
3) Lower the heat and add some sauce - stir it well while cooking
4) Turn off the heat (or down to warm) and add some finely grated cheese of your choice. Stir it in while it melts.
Also, get a panini sandwich maker and play around with it

Cauliflower steaks
Mad Mike : 7/19/2018 4:27 pm : link
Basically just slice them crosswise, season and cook in a skillet. I don't even particularly like cauliflower, but I thought this was pretty good. Quick, easy, tastier than I expected.

I wanted to cut back a bit. The easiest way for me to do it consistently was to eat a large salad each day for lunch. I also eat almonds with my lunch and some black beans. I mix it up a bit, but that's my typical lunch. Also, no processed dressing. I just use extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Ah, the newest fad.

You could just buy a bone-in rib steak. You're paying extra because saying tomahawk sounds cool.

Not paying for the name, but the size. the tomahawk is double the size of the typical bone-in rib steaks. Same price per pound from my butcher.

I didn’t realize a plant based diet meant forgoing dairy. Is that the case? Not sure I could give up cheese and milk and cream. Anyhow, thanks for the input everyone.
trueblue, I've been a vegetarian for 2 decades and my wife has been
Moondawg : 7/20/2018 8:10 am : link
as well. We both cook (her very well, me serviceably). What sorts of things do you like to eat? Less meat means more than salads (though they are awesome).

We tend to eat

Indian food, centered on rice, flat breads, vegetables, and pulse beans (wife is great cook)

Mexican (which is pretty easy). I make rice/bean/pepper/spinach quaesos in our press, she makes burritos

Wraps (I'd eat anything so long as it's in a wrap.

Pasta dishes

Sandwhiches

etc.
my spelling was bad in that, sorry

Thanks Moondawg, those are good cuisines for me to focus on. I love Mexican and Indian and since my goal is cut down on the meat and not to eliminate I should have plenty of choices. All good things in moderation.
Rice/bean quaesos is meat free but has great protein
Moondawg : 7/20/2018 6:54 pm : link
also chop up some spinach or red pepper, some onions, cilantro and it's a great meal. Some sliced avocados or quick quac (blend avacados with onions and a little sour cream), and it's a great meal.

just remember that there's some carbs in those rice, beans, tortilla, naan dishers. Plus you're obviously missing out on the lamb, chicken, etc. that are in so many of their dishes
