Presti did well. The Thunder save like 100M, they get back a decent young PG (who can't shoot) in Schroeder and another young wing player in Luwawu-Cabarot.
This is the type of deal we should do to rid ourselves of Noah.
Would much rather have 1 year of Kanter's deal and Mitchell Robinson than 3 more years of Schroeder at $15.5M (plus they dealt a first rounder to dump Melo)
Going to do with $20 million in cap space. Knicks need to get lee or hardaway off this roster for salary cap purposes and to open up minutes for young guys. Offer Lee and 2nd for ZBO or hardaway for a 2nd and send $5 million. Sac doesn’t need the cap space for next year because no big name free agent is signing in Sacramento.
In a strange way, George probably saw OKC taking on Melo as an indication they were committed to winning and spending. If Melo's presence and that improved his impression of the team, it was worth it.
When can we officially judge the original Melo to the Knicks deal? I hated it from day one and heard for years about how we got one of the better players in the NBA... I would have loved to see what might have happened without him.
The only time we ever came close to being a great team was when we were packed with veterans who didn’t follow Melos lead (Kidd, Kurt Thomas, Camby, Rasheed Wallace, Prigioni, Tyson Chandler etc).
Melo was FANTASTIC that year but it just proved that you needed structure and a great roster of pros to win with him as the centerpiece (instead of him carrying the team and making them better, which was too much to ask of him).
BTW for those who wanted the Knicks to take Porter jr. over Knox Â
That every team Melo has played for all eventually welcomed his leaving the team. He may have been a prolific scorer at one point but his legacy as an NBA player is overall underwhelming.

Couldn’t agree more, one of the most overrated stars of all time.
he's having his second back surgery already. Thank god we appear to finally have some people in the front office with brains. Link - ( New Window )
It honestly wouldn't have been a hard decision for me. I would never draft any player who was trying not to disclose medicals. There's nothing about that that sounds like a good idea.
the idea of Porter slippng to us was really intruiging. I thought the injury this year was more of an acute thing, but once I found out this is an injury he's been dealing with for years I wanted no part of him.

like we should be trying to hit homeruns. But yeah after it came out that this has been more of a longterm thing i def soured. We hopefully hit a hr anyway.
he never made thenknicks better? knicks were awful last few years he was here, but he absolutely made them better when he firat gotnto new york
I would pose that the counter-point to any improvements Melo made to the Knicks short-term win % when he was first acquired was counteracted by the fact that they traded away many assets to get him and then he proceeded to run D'Antoni out of town.
If instead of trading for Melo, the Knicks used their assets to form a D'Antoni style team, I believe the Knicks may have been better off. I think D'Antoni's success in Phoenix and Houston shows that with the right players he can be very successful. Granted, this assumes that the Knicks management wouldn't have bungled things in some other way, which I have to admit would be unlikely, but it does pose a scenario in which Melo only negatively impacted the Knicks.
before the knicks traded for melo that team that everyone loved started sliding and were on the verge of being out of the playoffs...
just stay the course? they would of been stuck with a broken down amare and gallinari, that would of been fun...
and do people forget that the fans hated dantoni by the time he left?
Isn't the whole reason that the current Knicks team actually has hope for the first time in forever because they have been "just staying the course"? Also, just because fans hate something doesn't mean it's bad.

that knicjs team had no one close to kp at that age...
i loved gallinari, i hated giving him up but he was good player, he was mot a suoerstar...
knicks back then had nothing to build around, so staying the course was basically playing for mediocrity....
when they traded for melo he was 26 and was a superstar, they didnt trade for a 30 year old...
their mistake was not trading for melo, it was signing amare and then instead of gettjng a point guard, they signed tyson chandler...

The big mistake was not waiting until Free Agency But the money hungry Melo threatened not to sign so Dolan forced Walsh to trade
Could’ve had a real good team if we didn’t have to trade all those assets and if Melo didn’t run Dantoni out of town
got there, and that team was never going to win anything. They played a fun style, and it was entirely dependent on Amare being healthy and throwing down 30 point games.
We’ve been thru this argument about Melo since 2011
You know I’ve never been a Melo fan. It’s not the trade that pissed me off so much but it’s the fucking no trade contract that Phil gave him that set this team back along with other lousy signings phil made
This is the type of deal we should do to rid ourselves of Noah.

Is it 1994? Does Vecsey break anything?

Peter Vecsey’s reporting Melo to the Nets could still happen

Just remembering how he kept insisting Melo was going to the Nets when the Knicks traded for him. Yup he’s a horses ass

He's going to Houston.
Paul has been telling people for a while now that Melo is going there after being waived.
Same here.
