NFT: Tankless water heaters

superspynyg : 7/20/2018 1:23 pm
Looking to have a tankless water heater put in. Has anyone had any experience doing this?

My house is 3000 sq feet with 3 full baths and one full bath to be added soon. How big of a water heater do I need?

What are the good brands?

Thanks in advance.
Contradiction here......

You want a tankless water heater put in, and then you ask how big of a water tank should you get?

A tankless water heater has no tank.

There are so many options.....an oil, gas, or electrical hot water tank, separate from the furnace......

If you have a oil fired hot water furnace, you can have a tankless heater in it, or you can run it to a storage tank with a heat exchanger.....

There are even wall mount heat exchangers that are fired by gas, and only use gas when there is a call for hot water....

Best to talk to an expert and have him explain all the options, based on your demands....

Do you have natural gas?
Doomster - he asked how big a heater to get

not how big a tank. They're sized according to the volume of water they can heat.
Went with a Noritz

when we built our house in 2014. Natural gas, and we went with the NR98 tankless model which I believe means a 9.8 gallons per minute capacity. 2,500sq ft home; couldn't be happier with it. I should also mention that I'm on an island off the Gulf Coast of Florida, so it never really gets cold here (by NY metro area standards).

I forgot to mention that the house has 3BR/2.5 baths. The contractor suggested we go one size down from the NR98, but I decided that for the extra $250 I wanted to ensure that we would never run out of hot water.

When I researched these, I found the Noritz come highly-recommended by all.
My tankless water heater has a 100 gallon tank

the tank supplies water to the air handler for forced hot air, the radiant floor heating and domestic hot water
My tank is a Boiler Mate

And a baseboard in a sunroom
I always use Rinnai

We've had them on jobs going back 15 years with no trouble. You have to have the right gas line sized to it. Did one yesterday with a 30 foot new gas supply run it was $3500 all in.

I still prefer an old fashioned tank myself. Simple, works when the power is on, and maybe costs $15-$20 more a month to run it.

The one we just did was in a house where space is at a premium so homeowner wanted it.
had a Rinnai installed a few months ago

so far, no issues. water gets hot just as fast as old tank. tanks are shitty now - poorly manufactured and cheap. we will see about cost savings over time. don't remember the specs - sorry
I just had to replace my water heater. We considered a tankless

system but our plumber, who has one himself, felt that even the largest wouldn't be able to supply 3 showers at the same time. So we went with the conventional 40 gallon tank.

Yes

Sorry for late reply
Size of house, number of baths is irrelevant

What matters is how many showers, washers etc you want to use simultaneously.
Stiebel Eltron Tempura Plus

seems like a monster. Can handle 3 showers and dishwasher and washing machine. Electric $750 3 years ago. Florida .

I wonder in the north during winters (if your bathroom is far from the tankless) that you might need to spike the tankless with another smaller one right before it hits the bathroom
Exactly...not in NH.
