Mets are working to finish a trade of closer Jeurys Familia. Oakland among the team with interest; Cubs not involved.
Why else could they not be pitching him?!
Don’t want to risk a strained oblique
I don't understand any of this. He's the closer! Make him close!

Oy!
It’s home run or nothing with these guys. This won’t cut it in the playoffs.
You fucking idiot! You’re seeing first hand what happens when they don’t hit HRs! They’ve had a billion singles, so what the hell are you talking about? This is the exact game all you ass clowns have been crying for.
So if I have this right, even when they have a billion hits in a game that doesn’t include a HR, it’s HR or nothing? That’s the fucking problem with your asinine complaints. How many hits does it take to score runs?
Amazing. Even when the clowns see evidence that their HR or nothing complaints are laughable, they STILL bring it up in real time. Clueless.
So let me get this straight. I offer a point of view that you don’t agree with and I’m and idiot. OK, I get it . Let’s just accept your point of view on everything and all will be right in the world. Right before the All Star break they showed a stat that since June and half of July the Yanks are 22th in the league with men in scoring position.
Cole's been good so far this year and has to do better there but no question, Boone has some head scratchers recently.
The only thing I can think of is he has an eye on tomorrow with Gray pitching. I hate that thinking as I say go for the game you're playing but I'm betting it's because of Gray.
not that Familia is a sure thing, but better than a 2nd inning from Gsellman
I don't understand any of this. He's the closer! Make him close!
They are likely very close to agreeing to a deal in which case there is no way they risk injuring him.

True, if they win tonight they can stay within 14 games of the division.

Players get pulled from games all the time when their teams are in final trade negotiations. Why does this surprise you? It's pretty common.

Yeah this is a pretty common practice
And if the deal falls through?
If the deal is done or if they have a deal in principle, fine.
But any other scenario makes no sense to hold him out here.
He's on the roster until such time that he is traded. Until such time, make him play.

That would be an awesome get. I'd also take the starter the Yankees sent them just about to come back from TJS.

Exactly....they are bad with RISP.

Weird logic. Teams hold out players on the verge of being traded all the time. What benefit is to the Mets to play him? We are about to go into a firesale. Do you think wins matter anymore?
Yes, the players and manager are trying to win. The Red Sox probably want the Mets to put their best foot forward.
He also hasn't pitched in six days. We're not talking about a tired pitcher here.
6 pitchers used yikes.

We should do it for the Red Sox? Ok. You dont get it. Have a good one man.

But it had nothing to do with his needing rest. If he is about to be traded it is about avoiding injury.
I wonder if Flores is going to cry.
I agree Stu. I was just offering up a guess as to why Boone went to him and not Robby or Betances. Boone's managed games with on an eye on the next one before and I wouldn't be surprised if he was doing it again tonight.
They went meekly in the 9th but no doubt that 7th run there took some momentum away from them.

So what does hitting HRs have to do with hitting with RISP? You honestly think these guys are up there trying to hit HRs? They have 14 hits tonight but suddenly want to hit HRs when runners are in scoring position?
I’m gonna clue you in. It’s hard to string together enough hits to score runs in today’s game. And I can also guarantee you that guys aren’t up there trying to hit HRs. You seen first hand tonight what hitting singles can do, yet it’s still HR or nothing, lol. Maybe, just maybe HRs have a tendency to score more runs than stringing together singles? Or do HRs only suck when they don’t get a hit with RISP? Then it’s all the HRs fault, right?
Yeah, I get it...still no trade. Game is over.
Where's the trade, boss?

Mets have done extensive scouting of the Houston Astros farm system, so perhaps Familia is a fit for the Astros. Back end of the Houston bullpen an obvious area of concern.

Sources: Mets have an agreement on structure of a Familia trade, but not finalized.

Threw well tonight and in his last MLB start. Just about anything is better than German right now. I’m not quite sure why they’re waiting with Justus. I don’t buy that they don’t want to expose him before a potential trade. One or two starts isn’t going to affect his value much.

It’s all about innings limits. They want him available deep into October. It’s that simple
Actually, Sheffield has not made a start since July 8. The International League had a 3 day All Star break at that time, before resuming on the 12th.
SWB went through their rotation once after that- skipping Sheffield. Then, they ran through their rotation again- and this time, will start Sheffield on Saturday, July 21.
It will have been 13 days between starts for Sheffield.
Assuming that Sheffield goes 6 innings in that start, and makes one more start before the end of July- and makes 6 innings in that one, he will be up to around 97-100 IP for the season.
Keep in mind that Sheffield's prior career high in IP is 128. Generally, the Yanks only add on about 30-40 IP to a pitcher's prior career high- so his cap would be somewhere around 160-165 IP.
Assuming he gets to about 100 at the end of July, if the Yanks called him up and put him in the rotation, he would make about 6 starts a month. Let's assume he goes 6 in each- that would be about 36 IP a month, or a total around 72 by the end of September.
Therefore, he is probably running around 10-20 IP ahead of where they want him to be. That means they need to skip at least one start and probably limit him to around 5 IP in several more.
In that case, in order to handle him with care, the Yanks might not be able to call him up until somewhere in mid-late August.
Sheffield is going to be a big part of their rotation plans going forward, so it does not do the Yanks any good to just throw him out there, throw too many innings and get hurt just because they aren't getting good starts from their 5th SP.
My guess- he gets limited in the Saturday outing and then they give him 6-7 days between starts for another 2-3 starts. That's mid August if they do that for 3 starts after Saturday. That might get him on the right pace
...but the Yankees starting rotation is making this team look more and more like a Wild Card playoff team as we enter the dog days of summer.

Huh??? Cessa and gray beat Baltimore last week. Let’s try another excuse. How about you loom to this overrated Yankee offense how many guys have they left on base in all their losses in July????

Yup blame they rotation when they are ranked 22nd in all of baseball with risp

Wait, aren't you one of the "this team doesn't get singles" guys? Complaining if they don't hit HR's they don't score and need more regular hits? How did that work out last night?
They got plenty of hits last night, just not timely ones, furthering the point it's hard to string together a few hits to score.
Personally I don't care how they score, just that they do. They certainly could've scored a bunch more last night but five runs should've been more than enough to beat this Mets team. You can blame RISP but it was the starting pitcher who cost them last night. If they win 5-1 or 5-2, people would be bummed they didn't score more but would still be pleased they hit as well as they did and won the game.
It's only because they lost anyone is pointing to the RISP, but someone could also complain they didn't hit any HR's because that would've won the game as well. Fact is German didn't do his job against a weak hitting/scoring team and that's where the blame begins and ends IMO.
Acevedo probably not quite ready for the big show yet according to most reports, but if one of the next 3-4 games has garbage time (for better or worse), might see him for a couple of innings I guess.
