I hear this a lot, here and in the media and it got me to thinking, what UFAs actually have lived up to their FA contract?
Lets for the moment exclude QBs and re-signing your own and turn our sights to FAs from OTHER TEAMS.
I cannot, off the top of my head, rattle off too many FAs signed from other teams that lived up to their contract.
Theres the classic guy, Reggie White. I would say Kareem McKenzie for sure, but I cant recall too many others. Plax for a few years..I welcome your input on those that you believe lived up to their FA contract. Again, forget re-signed players-just FAs from OTHER teams..And it need not only be players who signed with us.
And go
Im trying to exclude QBs, but since you brought up Brees, did he actually sign a big money contract with that uncertain shoulder?
I like the signing of Nate Solder because we needed an upgrade at LT for Eli to survive and flourish a bit with his weapons. I like Solder because he comes from a winning program (New Englad) and seems like a team player. But he'll never live up to his pay.
There are about a DOZEN Left Tackles better than him as I understand it but he was the top UFA LT and got paid. Good for him and his family.
Let's be honest, Shurmur can cut Vernon, Eli, Jenkins if they don't live up to expectations this off-season and open enough cap space to sign guys that fit his system.
But for now, I'm with you BB'56, not many live up to the pay hype contract.
Don, Signed FROM other teams. Otherwise, not understanding your post

Sometimes, you have to overpay, because, if you covet a player, the market dictates it. Canty(had a terrific 2011) and Boley were not worth that kind of money, but what some dont seem to understand, the market DICTATES cost, rarely worth, imv

I was being critical of myself, not you. I misread your post...twice
With that in mind I go back to my original post.
Plax was a good one.
And when it comes to FAcy, when you suck in the draft, you have to go after guys and overpay to fill huge holes.....
We paid OV and JPP money that put them in the top 4 for DE's.....only Watt had a better value contract than OV.....so when you get that kind of money, you better be a game changer....is OV a game changer? NO, just a solid player....that 200M Reese spent, provided One good season.....in retrospect, was it worth it?
Which is exactly what I said not big money but...
Antrelle Rolle would be my big money player.

Mitchell and Madison did NOT receive big FA contracts. Thats the purpose of the thread; how many FAs signed are/were as good as their contract?

BB56, yup. Saban wanted him badly on the 'Fins, but their medical team wasn't on board so Miami went after Culpepper instead.

I wasn't aware that his contract was over.
I was under the impression he would be with them this season, possibly showing his worth in a defense suited to his skillet.
My bad.

Yes, I can't wait to see him in coverage downfield....
Next year he is a 19.5M cap hit.....if he plays at the same level, think he is a NY Giant next season, or will he join JPP?
I was thinking of him, but couldnt remember his name.
I think salaries today are outrageous, but, market is the market. That said, agree, get all you can before CTE et al set in..🙁
Except Walls wasnt expensive which is the point of this thread. Also O.J. Anderson arrived via trade
Snacks
Kareem
AP
O'Hara
Barrow
Plax (gun was really non-football)
Rolle
OV and Jenkins: could go either way but I would say positive so far
Given that the Giants do not sign many big FA, they have done very well.A bigger problem has been resigning our own big FA:
JPP
Snee
Sehorn
All three of these guys had injury problems and Giants signed them anyway. Too loyal?
Where the Giants have done less well is "bargain" free agents. K Mitchell was a good one. But most of the other "lesser" free agents have not turned out well.

Hutchinson and Mawae are excellent examples..Not sure Id count Martin as RFA. Wasnt he acquired via trade?
Pats couldnt match the Jets offer sheet, because it contained a ridiculous poison pill. New England appealed to the League for relief, and wound up with two high draft picks as compensation. That whole period of Jets-Patriots history is pretty nutty.
That sounds familiar. Thank you sir
Had one great year, most of his other years were ok, but not worth the contract.

I dont agree, he certainly had more than 1 good year and he ended up being the leader on defense. Hes was definitely worth it, IMO.
Second that. Very effective for one season.
taking a FA is risky you never really know if its a product of the system or the guys around them and all too often its both of those, you also have to factor in the fact thier current team is willing to let them leave as well.
guys like owens and saunders who are equally good wherever they played are extremely rare, deon is the most obvious of these he stood out on every team he played on for alot of years as well mostly its a short spells of a year or 2 in most cases

that went to another team thats an even harder list hakeem nicks, steve smith, kevin boss, prince amukamara, arron ross all signed fairly big contracts
Then again, the premise of the thread was: OTHER THAN QBs...

I couldn't either. I looked it up. :)
