Schneier 247 Sports: Evan Engram can't wait for 'smash route' in unique new offense
"Yeah -- we're definitely getting downfield and I'm really excited to do that now," Engram told Dan Schneier of Giants on 247Sports during the Hyundai Youth Football Camp he led at Superdome Sports in Waldwick, N.J. "I'm excited to be using my speed to get open. With that said, the defense will have to stay honest now and play more man (coverage) or a different type of zone. When everything comes together, drafting Saquon, some additions on the O-line with Odell, Sterling, and our other receivers, Eli can get comfortable and get going. There’s going to be a lot of opportunities for a lot of people to get downfield and make plays...”
"What makes this offense so unique is there are bodies everywhere," Engram said. "I can be outside, in the backfield, in-line and in the slot. I moved around a little last year, but this has a lot more moving around. It’s for everybody, it’s not just for tight ends. Odell can be in the slot and I can be outside of him and we can have him motion into the backfield. There’s so much unique stuff and everybody is going to be coming from all different angles."

Traina BBV: A detailed look at CB Sam Beal’s contract
“What’s interesting about Beal’s deal is that he only has a split in the first year of the contract. Why is this significant? Because it provides a potential clue into how the Giants might be thinking for next year.
The likely scenario for 2018 is that Beal will contribute in a limited fashion as a rookie, this due to some technique issues noted by scouting reports that need to be cleaned up...
I would not be surprised if this is the final season with the Giants for Jenkins.
Jenkins, who will be 31 in 2019, is due to count for $13.25 million against next year’s cap. With him coming off an injury plagued 2017 season that also saw him draw a suspension for an undisclosed violation of team rules, he needs to revert back to his Pro Bowl form from 2016 in order to justify the high payout that is currently on the books for him in 2019.
If Jenkins is cut before the start of next year’s free agency, he would cost the Giants only $4 million in dead money, yielding a $9.25 million savings which is plenty of money to get two or three free agents, be they from other teams or the Giants own, on board.”

Fowler's suspension adds weight to the Jaguars' decision to decline his fifth year option in May. It's a full-on prove it year for the former first-round pick. Dawuane Smoot and Lerentee McCray benefit here. Plus, extra spot for Week 1 potential bubble players.

Giants Ring of Honor: Of Missing Persons
Part 4: Rodney Hampton

Who is in the Giants Ring of Honor
https://www.bigblueinteractive.com/information-pages/new-york-giants-ring-of-honor/

Candidates to consider:

Rodney Hampton

NYG 1990-1997

2nd All-Time Giants leading rusher 1824
Yards

5 straight 1,000 yard rushing seasons

1991 1,059 yards
1992 1,141 yards
1993 1,077 yards
1994 1,075 yards
1995 1,182 yards

2 Pro Bowls

1990-1991 NYT: FOOTBALL; Place in Giant Plans Saved for Hampton

“Hampton's frustration stemmed from having finally worked himself into the flow of the Giants' offense. He started off slowly, playing a limited role because he didn't fully grasp blocking schemes, particularly the blitz pickups. Because of his liability as a blocker, Hampton was used more as a receiver early on. In the first four games of the season he had 14 receptions for 155 yards.
In the first 11 games that he played, Hampton averaged 3.8 carries and 16 yards a game rushing. In the final four games of the season he had picked up 61 carries for 275 yards or more than half of his rushing totals (109 carries, 451 yards) for the season.”

12-04-1992 Wash Post: Redskins eye Hampton

“The Washington Redskins took another look at the Rodney Hampton highlight tape this week and it was just as impressive the second time around. If they were ever inclined to think of the New York Giants as a team in trouble, with three straight losses, a coach on the hot seat and a roster in transition, the Redskins were reminded what they have to worry about.
Specifically, Rodney Hampton.
The Giants have given the Redskins fits for years, but now, at a time when the Redskins seem to have an edge in most areas, there's one troubling matchup: Hampton versus a defense that has had trouble stopping big running backs.
It was bad enough a month ago at RFK Stadium when the Giants handed the Redskins a thorough, physical beating, mainly because they rushed for 241 yards -- the second most ever against a Joe Gibbs team. Hampton got 138 of those yards as the Giants controlled the ball for almost 40 minutes and beat the Redskins, 24-7...”

09-20-1993 NYT: PRO FOOTBALL; Rodney Redux: Hampton Again Rushes 134 Yards to Pace Giants

“Hampton Again and Again
But when a team has Rodney Hampton, that can happen. He rushed for 134 yards and one touchdown, and his 41 carries were just two short of a club record set by Butch Woolfolk against Philadelphia in 1983. Hampton also had a 37-yard reception.
"He's like seeing the little rabbit in the Energizer commercial," said guard William Roberts. "He keeps going and going."

12-01-1994 NYT: A Bruised-Up Hampton Now Gives 1,000 a Shot

“Rodney Hampton didn't know it at the time, but at some point in the game last week against the Washington Redskins, a very important piece of protective gear had failed him. The padding that shielded his kidneys had come unzipped. His left kidney, which had been smashed earlier in the season on a crushing hit, was again exposed.

The first hit came against the Arizona Cardinals in September, and it led to Hampton's being hospitalized and to his getting the gear to begin with. This time, it was Redskins cornerback Tom Carter who hit him with about two minutes left in the game. The blow definitely wasn't as hard as the first one, but it left Hampton in considerable pain.
The first thing he did after the game was to check his urine.
He can laugh about it now, but at the time it wasn't funny. The first time Hampton hurt his kidney, there was blood in his urine, which led to his spending several days in a hospital bed. Now, it's nothing nearly that serious. He's listed as questionable for this week against Cleveland and will most probably play. "No hospitals or doctors this time," he joked, "so I must be O.K."
What makes Hampton so good is not only his athletic ability, but also his toughness. He has consistently proved that he can play through pain and injury and, despite missing games because of it, somehow manage to gain 1,000 yards a season.
Last year, he had arthroscopic surgery on his knee in the middle of the season, missed four games, and still rushed for 1,077 yards, becoming the first Giant to gain at least 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. This season, the kidney injury forced him to miss two games and he has rushed for 770 yards on 231 carries, fifth best in the National Football Conference. With four games left in the season, Hampton has a shot at 1,000 yards.
Hampton was asked if his statistics would be up there with some of the other top backs in the league had he not been hurt. "Without a doubt," he said. "Since early in the season I've been playing sore, but I haven't let that stop me."
Hampton isn't obsessed over getting 1,000 yards, but if it comes, he'll take it. Gladly. And he has his work cut out for him; the Browns have not allowed a 100-yard rusher this season. The Giants are 12-4 when Hampton rushes for at least 100 yards in a game.
"Rodney is banged up, which you assume he would be after running as hard as he ran last week and getting hit as many times as he did," said Giants Coach Dan Reeves. "I think he'll be ready, but certainly there's a question whenever you're sore and bruised up like he is."
By Hampton's standards, it has been a down season, but that's what makes the fact that he still has a shot at 1,000 yards all the more impressive. Hampton rushed for 27 yards against Minnesota, 34 yards against Pittsburgh, 14 yards against Dallas, missed two games because of injury, and still has close to 800 yards rushing... Is Hampton injury prone? Maybe. The fact is that Hampton is asked to do just about all of the running and, as a power runner, he's bound to get his share of bruises. It's not so much that he's injury prone as that he may simply take more of a beating than any other back in the league.”
