The Plaxico TD Catch in Super Bowl 42 - Forgotten?

Anakim : 7/21/2018 11:50 pm
So I'm watching NFL Network's Top 10 Forgotten Plays and guess what comes in at #3: Plaxico's game-winning TD catch in SB 42.

I was absolutely floored. What am I missing? I think behind the Tyree catch (which granted was a few minutes earlier) it's the most memorable moment of the game. This comedian who looked like a homeless guy thought that the Tyree catch was the play that won the game. John Gonzalez (a.k.a. the Eagles beatwriter who by some miracle married Colleen Wolfe) didn't remember who scored the GW TD. Some weird German comedian said we don't remember Plaxico.

Are we so immersed in our Giants that we don't realize that PERHAPS the general public (gasp!) forgot about this play? Jason Cole of the Bleacher Report said that it's "absolutely" a forgotten. But Is this really a forgotten play? Burress. Alone. Touchdown New York? Really? People really don't remember it?
I think it's because he shot himself in the leg 10 months later
DennyInDenville : 7/21/2018 11:55 pm : link
At a night club when he brought a pistol and kept it in his sweatpants where everyone was so floored at his moment of stupidity and then Bloomberg throwing the book at him and sending him to prison made many Giants fans forget that incredible moment of greatness to win Super Bowl 42

Many others blame him for not repeating in 08 (wasn't gonna happen folks, the defensive line was fully out of gas by week 13 and had nothing left to offer at all, they were fully shot and nobody was healthy/fresh to play well)
Not me though, I remember all the greatness Plaxico brought to the NYG and also his legendary performance against Al Harris in the nfccg
I won’t forget it
giantsFC : 7/21/2018 11:55 pm : link
As I’m a giants fan, plaxico was a shell of himself all day, and seeing it unfold in what felt like slow motion...surreal.

But yeah, it’s never talked about. Ever. Forgotten.

The Jay Alford sack on Brady at the end can also be in this conversation.

But THE CATCH was so amazing that it’s expected.

Funny, if what went down w plaxico Burress occurred during this era of civil unrest, there would have been huge outrage for what sentence was handed down on Burress...no way he deserved that compared to what others get less for. He got a raw deal. .
Its definitely
MookGiants : 7/22/2018 12:12 am : link
a forgotten play. And it has nothing to do with Plax shooting himself. Tyree play is the reason
I really don't remember what play you are talking about

Forgotten?

Not by me!
Not by us .... but, we are Giant's Fans.
short lease : 7/22/2018 1:56 am : link
Maybe others have forgotten ... and if they have it is because it came on the same drive as the most MEMORABLE CATCH in Super Bowl history.

Anti-climatic maybe ... but, forgotten?!! Never!

Steve Smith 3rd down play is a better option in my view.

I agree. We don't win without that play.
As I’ve opined rather often,
Big Blue '56 : 7/22/2018 7:13 am : link
the casual fan, remembers Tyree. We remember, Jacobs’ 4th and 1, Steve Smith’s 3 rd and 11, Plax’ TD of course, Boss’ long run, Eli’s first down scramble and so on
I thought Tyree
Jimmy Googs : 7/22/2018 7:30 am : link
caught the winning touchdown on his helmet?
IF it's forgotten,
Montreal Man : 7/22/2018 7:32 am : link
which I doubt, but I think it's because it was such a perfect play. Almost like a toss and catch. Perfect pass, Plax wide open. It was "easy." Not spectacular. Just a SuperBowl winning play. Thank you, Plax and Eli.
Gotta disagree with you Denny,
Doomster : 7/22/2018 7:45 am : link
the defense would not have been as gassed as you say, if Plax was out there making plays....keeping the defense off the field.....

They basically had 3 weeks off, only playing a partial game in Minny, and having the bye....they would have played for the championship the next week and then have 2 more weeks off....

That gassed defense only gave up one long drive to the Eagles....it was the inability to convert 4th downs, Eli having a terrible game, and not having Plax out there, who owned the Eagles, that cost us that game.... and another SB.....
I remember Mark Ingram's SB catch
Coach Red Beaulieu : 7/22/2018 7:56 am : link
That was arguably a greater catch than Tyree, when Ingram was temporarily possessed by the spirit of Barry Sanders on a long 3rd late in the game.
What should be forgotten is any top 10 or top 100 shows

And yet..
FatMan in Charlotte : 7/22/2018 8:22 am : link
even that play gets blurred by time:

It was in the 3rd quarter during the massive time-sucking drive that ended with and OJ Anderson TD.

To be accurate, it was not the catch, it was the run afterwards that was extraordinary and key. Tyree was just about the catch. No comparison really, save for the fact that they were extremely big
Ingram's ability to convert that first down
Jimmy Googs : 7/22/2018 9:00 am : link
was nothing short of a miracle.

Dare I say, it was like he was touched by the hand of God...
As Giants fans we haven't forgotten this play
Matt M. : 7/22/2018 9:52 am : link
But, nationally, I am not surprised that the only play really rememberwd from this game is the Tyree catch.

Had an unreal quality to it like Tyree magic helmet catch. I think both Tyree and Harrison said the catch had a divine element to it.

Also remembered seeing an interview with the DL who almost sacked Eli, still seemed broken up about that play years later.

. . . because I was so afraid that something bad would happen on that play.

Can you imagine if Eli had missed him, or if Plax had dropped it?

This and the Jacobs 4th and 1 run for a first. Those 2 plays were totally forgotten. Nobody forgot the Burress catch
Not forgotten...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 7/22/2018 10:41 am : link
But probably overshadowed by the Tyree catch.

I didn’t move an inch that entire drive right up until after the helmet catch. I sat their frozen and terrified lol... then Eli and tyree went nuts and I started to move a little. Got that was crazy.
Remember
Daniel in MI : 7/22/2018 11:46 am : link
When the Rams won the super bowl and Isaac Bruce made a nice catch? No, me either. It wasn’t my team. My interest was real, but casual. Now I remember next to nothing. Only very memorable plays stick when it’s not your team.

Now, as a Giants fan? “Manning lobs it...Burress alone.... Touchdown New York!”

I think the only thing many have forgotten is,
Doomster : 7/22/2018 11:58 am : link
Plaxico caught Eli's first pass of the game, and his last, and NOTHING in between......
I will always
mdthedream : 7/22/2018 12:45 pm : link
remember it I grabbed my kid and threw him up in the air after that play. His head almost hit the ceiling. It was like slow motion and it was a huge play against a undefeated football team. Plus down by 4 with 35 seconds left.
Similar to the Randy Moss TD to put the Pats ahead
AnyoneButPhilly : 7/22/2018 2:43 pm : link
It was just kind of a wide open uncontested TD. Webster tripped over his own feet was ever worse than what Plax did to Hobbs
RE: BB56 We remember, Jacobs’ 4th and 1

Another forgotten play
gfinop : 7/22/2018 3:51 pm : link
There was a play when Burress was wide open late in the game and I believe had an open field to the end zone and Eli flat out missed him.

If that was completed and I think at that time the score would have sealed the game for the Giants or at least put them up by 2 scores.

Then none of the dramatics we fondly remember now happens.

Plax was wide open. I don't know if he scores, but he gets a nice chuck of yardage.

Well, Eli missed him because Plax stopped....Eli thought he was going to keep running which is probably the play when your QB is scrambling......BTW, Eli made a really nice spin move to avoid pressure and get free.

The mobile Eli Manning!!!! :)
I can understand why people thought the Tyree play was the game winner
Bramton1 : 7/22/2018 9:17 pm : link
I hosted a Super Bowl party, and after that play, one of my friends said, "You guys are going to win!" I replied, "Shut up, Sam!"
Kind of like the 1980 Olympic Gold Medal hockey game

totally overshadowed by the Miracle on Ice.
I feel like anytime they show more than one highlight from that game
BestFeature : 7/22/2018 11:11 pm : link
they show the Plax play. I think I even recently saw a highlight from the game that included the Plax play but not the Tyree play. I'm a little surprised.
.
arcarsenal : 7/22/2018 11:14 pm : link
Think about it this way..

What is THE quintessential highlight of that game?

It's not Plax, it's Tyree.

It's that Tyree's catch was spectacular in so many ways - the moment, the difficulty of the catch, the way Eli escaped what looked to be a sure sack...

Plax juked Ellis Hobbs like a JV corner and made one of the easiest catches you'll see.

The Burress catch was enormous, obviously - but it's not surprising that it almost gets buried because of the Tyree play.
I heard this for a while post SB42:
mrvax : 7/22/2018 11:37 pm : link
"Roses are red, violets are blue, Plax in the endzone, Hobbs at the 2."
Another part of that particular play
cjac : 7/23/2018 8:30 am : link
that was impressive but not talked about

Was Brandon Jacobs crossing Eli's face and picking up the backside safety blitz. If he doesn't see that, Eli gets sacked for a loss.
"Manning... lobs it... Burress.. Alone... Touchdown New York!"
Knee of Theismann : 7/24/2018 12:36 pm : link
This is my favorite call by any broadcaster in the history of sports. Buck nailed it, and it was easily the most elation I've ever felt watching sports.
