Giants Ring of Honor: Of Missing Persons
Part 5: Del Shofner

Who is in the Giants Ring of Honor
https://www.bigblueinteractive.com/information-pages/new-york-giants-ring-of-honor/

Candidates to consider:

Del Shofner

All Pro 1961, 1962, 1963
Pro Bowl 1961, 1962, 1963
NFL All Decade Team 1960’s

1961 68-1125-11
1962 53-1133-11
1863 64-1181-9

Judge Talk of Fame:
Quick now, name the only two first-team wide receivers – and I mean split ends — from all-decade units of the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s not in the Hall of Fame. Here’s a hint: One of them is former Dallas standout Drew Pearson, whom we interviewed earlier this year on the Talk of Fame Network.
So who’s the other? Try Del Shofner.
Washington’s Charley Taylor was the other, and he’s in the Hall. Shofner is not, and it’s time to reconsider his credentials.
He was a five-time All-Pro. He was a five-time Pro Bowler. He was among the NFL’s top four in receiving yards all five times – leading the league with 1,097 yards in 1958 – and was in the top 10 in receptions and TDs all five times. Furthermore, for nearly 20 years (1963-81) he was the NFL’s only four-time 1,000-yard receiver before Steve Largent and Charlie Joiner tied him.
They’re in the Hall, too.

Unlike those two, however, Shofner was a deep threat. In fact, Hall of Fame quarterback Y.A. Tittle once said that while former San Francisco great Billy Wilson had the best hands of his receivers and Hall-of-Famer Frank Gifford was the smartest, it was Shofner who was “the best and most dangerous of them all.”

Reason: He could stretch a defense – and the numbers prove it. He averaged 18.5 yards per reception for his career, including 21.5 yards in 1958 and 21.4 in 1962.

When he helped lead the New York Giants to three straight championship-game appearances from 1961-63, he caught more passes (185) for more yards (3,439) and more touchdowns (32) than any receiver in the NFL and once hauled down 11 passes for 269 yards in a 1962 defeat of Washington … and I know what you’re thinking: Yeah? Well, big deal.

As a matter of fact, it is. Fifty-four years later, those 269 yards are still a Giants’ record, and they’re 13th all-time among NFL receivers.

But that’s not all. Shofner could punt, too. In fact, he handled that job for the Los Angeles Rams from 1958-60, averaging 42 yards per kick and ranking sixth in the league in 1960 with a 42.6-yard average.

Yet, in the end, it is those numbers that betray Del Shofner. Injury and illness cut short his career and caused a decline in his performance after the ‘63 season, and it is career numbers that we often use to measure greatness for Canton. Shofner had five outstanding seasons, and while that’s enough to gain him all-decade recognition it’s not enough for the Hall’s board of selectors to commit to him.

And that’s unfortunate. Because as accomplished as he was, he was also a pioneer – one of the first legitimate deep threats in NFL history. League historian John Turney of the Pro Football Journal mentioned that on a recent Talk of Fame Network broadcast when we asked him to name five guys he’d put in Canton who aren’t there now.

Del Shofner was one of his five.

“(He) was the deep, deep threat who, pre-Bob Hayes caused defenses to roll the zone toward his side,” Turney said. “He was a split end and, as you know, on the one-receiver side usually they (defenses) don’t roll the zone that way. They did that for Shofner, and they did that for Bob Hayes.”bi
Hayes is in the Hall of Fame, too, though it took over three decades for him to get there. Del Shofner not only isn’t in Canton; he’s never been a finalist, and, yeah, I’d like to see that change. It only seems right and fair that someone who was ahead of his time … someone who dominated the league before injuries and illness cut short his career … should have his case heard.”

SI: A SUCCESSFUL TRADER IN GIANTS

“The Tittle trade was not the only offensive success this fall. At about the same time Mara made a deal that brought End Del Shofner, Tittle's and Conerly's best target, from the Los Angeles Rams. "The Shofner deal came up very suddenly," Mara said the other day. "Some deals—like the one we made with the Redskins for Joe Walton and Jim Podoley—take months to work out."

But Shofner, for one reason or another, presented a real problem to the Giant trading committee, which consists of Mara, Jim Lee Howell, chief talent scout and former head coach of the Giants, and the Giant coaches.

"Del had had two great years with the Rams," Mara said. "And he fitted a need of ours precisely. We wanted an end who could go deep to catch passes, and for two years Del had been able to do that. But in 1960 he caught only 12 passes for the Rams and scored only one touchdown. In 1958 he caught 51 for 1,097 yards, and in 1959 he got 47 for 936. We had to know whether he would play back to his 1958 and 1959 form or would have another year like 1960."
Sounding board
As they always do when presented with a possible trade, Mara and the Giant coaches meticulously sounded out Giant players and coaches who had played against Shofner. Lynch, acquired from the Redskins, had faced Shofner three times. "I couldn't cover him man on man in 1958 or 1959," Lynch said. "I couldn't cover him in 1960 either. He's as good as he ever was."
Tittle, just in from the 49ers, had looked at Shofner three times in each previous season. He had also played with Shofner in Pro Bowl games. Said Tittle: "I talked to him at the Pro Bowl game and, as far as I know, he dropped a couple of passes against the 49ers early last year, and the club lost confidence in him. Then he lost confidence in himself and they put him on the bench. He had a series of muscle pulls, too. But he is as good as he ever was.
We were still doubtful," Mara says. "But you've got to take a chance. You can't think the guy I'm giving up may come back and beat me. If Shofner played back to his '58 and '59 form we wanted him badly. And we trust our people. So we traded the Rams a first and second draft choice—in different years—for Del."
So far this season Shofner has caught 46 passes for 722 yards and eight touchdowns. At 26, he appears capable of providing the Giants with a truly topflight offensive end for at least the next five years. It is very doubtful that the Rams, even with two high draft choices, can come up with as capable a pro football performer as Shofner.”
https://www.si.com/vault/1961/11/20/619082/a-successful-trader-in-giants

1961: Giants Obtain Del Shofner from Rams

“On August 28 the receiving corps was bolstered by the acquisition of split end Del Shofner from the Los Angeles Rams.
The Giants traded the 1962 first draft choice that they had obtained from the Vikings in the deal for Shaw to LA in order to get the lanky (6’3”, 186 pounds) four-year veteran (the Rams used the draft choice to pick QB Roman Gabriel from North Carolina State).
The arrival of Tittle and Shofner paid dividends for 1961 and beyond. Tittle supplanted Conerly as the starting quarterback and had a Pro Bowl year, throwing for 2272 yards and 17 touchdowns. Shofner caught 68 passes for 1125 yards and 11 TDs, also garnering a Pro Bowl selection as well as consensus first-team All-NFL honors. The revitalized Giants narrowly topped the Eastern Conference with a 10-3-1 record although they were blown out in the NFL title game by the Packers.
The combination of Tittle to Shofner remained effective in 1962 and ’63. In 1962 Shofner showed his toughness when, injured against the Steelers in the fifth game of the season, he was initially diagnosed with a broken shoulder that was expected to keep him out of action for six to eight weeks. Instead, he missed only one game and when he returned for a contest against the visiting Washington Redskins had one of the great receiving games in franchise history as he pulled in 11 passes for 269 yards and a TD. It was all part of a day in which Tittle threw for 505 yards and a record-tying seven touchdowns.
Shofner went on to accumulate 53 catches for 1133 yards (21.4 avg.) and 12 TDs. He again received consensus first-team All-NFL and Pro Bowl honors. It was the same in 1963 as he pulled in 64 passes for 1181 yards (18.5 avg.) and 9 touchdowns. In his first three seasons with the Giants, Shofner caught 185 passes for 3439 yards, averaging 18.6 yards per catch, and scored 32 TDs. Along the way he had 13 hundred-yard performances and on four occasions caught three touchdown passes in a game.”
