Familia is gone and the debate over our return is fairly settled - people aren't happy but we will see what happens.

What do you guys want for Cabrera?

and if we end up trading Wheeler, what can we expect in return and who do you think we're trading with. It's a SP market and Wheeler has looked great lately and has another year of control left. I think we can for sure get a top 100 prospect, but from whom and what position do we want to target?

The contenders? I could see Houston, Colorado, Atlanta, Philadelhia, Milwaukee, Yankees, Seattle, and Cleveland.

Atlanta, Colorado, Milwaukee and Philly have loaded farms.

I don't think we can trade with the Yankes.

From:
Milwaukee: I wonder if Corey Ray from Milwaukee with a bullpen arm or a #4 starter upside pitcher is a good enough return? I would love their 2nd basemen, but I think McNeil is gonna be a starter at 2b moving forward.

Cleveland: I like Shane Bieber as a reliable #4 starter, he has tremendous control and seems to be a poised pitcher. Maybe a ++dillon gee; I like Nolan Jones as a 3B prospect as well. Maybe a Bieber/Jones combination could do it.

Coloardo: Peter Lambert seems like another good middle of the rotation starter who doesn't walk a lot of batters, which I like. Low whip. I have been scouting farm systems for LHRP and thought Ben Bowden could be a good add-on as a power lefty. Doubt they would give up Brendan Rodgers, But a package centered around Colton Walker could be a good get along with Lambert and Bowden.

Atlanta/Philly/Yanks: Are we really going to trade with them? If so, what can we get?

Cabrera is not bringing back much
Eric on Li : 7/22/2018 2:42 pm : link
just like Walker last year. At this point literally the only exciting thing that could come of this deadline is getting enough international FA money to get that guy Victor Victor, but that will be a long shot. Otheriwse they'd have done better literally doing nothing and just getting a top 50 pick in next year's draft.

After seeing their terrible roi on Familia I'd hold Wheeler and any other non rentals until a real GM comes on board in the offseason.
For Cabrera
pjcas18 : 7/22/2018 2:47 pm : link
the return for Familia sounds right.

For the Mets, they'll probably actually get a journeyman middle reliever and probably have to kick in Gimenez because the reliever is "major league ready"
After seeing what the Mets got for Familia
Jay on the Island : 7/22/2018 2:48 pm : link
I would expect a similar return for Cabrera.

As for Wheeler I think the Mets could get a top 100 prospect for him plus a low A or rookie ball lottery ticket. The Braves will not be interested in Wheeler though as they need room for their prospects who are knocking on the door (Gohara, Fried, Allard, Toussaint, Wright, Wilson, Sims, Parsons). I think the Phillies would be interested after losing out on Machado.

As I said yesterday, I'd be happy with Parsons+ or Tarnok+ for Cabrera since it is obvious the Mets don't give a crap about the return if they can shed salary and I think both are underrated due to Atlanta and their pitching depth

There is no way they are giving up Tarnok for a rental. Tarnok doesn't have a ton of value at the moment but his upside is huge. Last year after he was drafted he received comps to DeGrom due to being SS to pitching conversions. Tarnok is very raw but he is pitching better than expected in single A. After Toussaint he might have the highest upside of any pitcher in the Braves system.

I would consider Parsons straight up for Cabrera but after seeing the Familia return I would lower it and offer 3B Rio Ruiz and RP Adam McCreery.

And they were absolutely crushing the Mets for this trade and mentioned how its yet another salary dump meant to deceive fans and players. Then they go on and mention the handling of yet another star injury this time being Cespedes and how they should have already Scheduled the surgery. More deception and mis communication from the Mets 3 headed monster GM team.

I want no part in this group trading a single player for the rest of the season. Unbelievable this franchise continues to just fuck up time and time again.

I hope the Mets get crucified by the commentators tonight on Sunday night baseball.

Gimenez promoted to AA at age 19 (less than a year older than Kelenic)
Eric on Li : 7/22/2018 3:51 pm : link
A few thoughts bc I think he appears to be very underrated.

His numbers in his first season at St Lucie were very impressive this year, as good as Rosarios when he was 20 (his 2nd year there) if not better. But what makes them even more Impressive (IMO) is that the stl roster sucks and he has led them in virtually every offensive category the entire year. Hes also been extremely consistent all year, just 1 slump in June. I assume
This year is more going to be a learning experience at AA to start making the adjustment and next year will be more of the test where he can start making some real noise.

Anytime Jay. Took Luiz Gohara late in my draft for my 12 team keeper league (30 players per team + 3 DL slots + 1 NA slot, you keep 16 players each year with no limit on how long you can keep a player). Needless to say, despite being currently in first place, he has been a disappointment. Likely on the bubble with Mike Soroka and Jack Flaherty (both I scooped off of Free Agency) when it comes to keeping him among my 16 next year. I also have Sean Newcomb on my roster. Despite being a Mets fan, I have assembled the Braves starting rotation! I had Teheran earlier in the year after landing him in the 19th round of the draft, but dumped him in early May because he was struggling to throw 6 innings against anyone but the Mets and I figured someone would overvalue him thinking he is a potential "keeper" which will make someone better in next year's draft.
I like Gimenez
pjcas18 : 7/22/2018 3:58 pm : link
and agree he's sort of overlooked, but IMO it's mostly based on his upside - per scouts expectations.

He's compared to a Ruben Tejada, where Rosario had been compared, from a tools standpoint, with Miguel Tejada.

Ruben Tejada was also in AA at 19, he did every thing ok to good, but had no standout tools. Tejada was in AAA at 20 and debuted in Queens at 20.

Maybe Gimenez will be different, but until he shows it; I'll be reserved in my anticipation/expectations.

I like what he's doing and I'll hope for the best, but scouts I don't think have set the bar at an exciting level - which is the reason IMO for the lack of attention/hype (compared with Rosario).

Gohara has had a tough year
Jay on the Island : 7/22/2018 4:00 pm : link
First his father passed away. Then he gets injured and misses all of spring training and the beginning of the season. Then his mother gets sick and needs heart surgery where he took a leave of absence to be with her in Brazil. This is a lost year for him but I would hold onto him because with a full healthy offseason and without the family issues he should bounce back and become a mainstay in the Braves rotation.

Not to completely miller this thread, but I am in a tough position with potential keepers at the moment because the second half could really change things:

IN (assuming I keep Gohara) - Matt Carpenter, Manny Machado, Francisco Lindor, Kyle Schwarber, Andrew Benintendi, Wil Myers, Justin Upton, Jeimer Candelario, Christian Yelich, Sean Newcomb, Carlos Carrasco, Jacob deGrom, Kenley Jansen, Corey Knebel, Jack Flaherty, Luiz Gohara

OUT - Brandon Belt, Jonathan Schoop, Jesus Aguilar, Josh Donaldson, Roberto Osuna, Mike Soroka, Michael Fulmer

I agree the knock is upside, but in terms of the hyperbole I actually don't think the Tejada comp is as bad as it seems (though Gimenez has showed more speed + power, so rich man's Tejada is probably more appropriate). As a 21 year old in the big leagues Tejada hit .285 with a .360 OBP. That's significantly better than Rosario has done to this point. We all forget that Tejada actually had the talent to be something - he just became the organizational whipping boy for his approach/attitude. Everything I've read about Gimenez indicates the opposite. Slightly more talented, harder working Ruben Tejada doesn't sound that bad - especially if the more polished skill set allows for a smoother transition as compared to Rosario.
Yeah Gimenez has a ton more speed

More power too. Other than rookie ball Tejada's best slg% in the minors was .380. Gimenez is at .432 this year.

Someone like Jose Ramirez is probably a good example of why you can never really put a ceiling on anyone. So I'm not in any way trying to act like he's just a little better than Tejada and that's great. Being a little more talented and a lot more hard working could make him a much better player or he could still totally flame out, projecting out is just that. In terms of track and what he's accomplished to this point though, he's ahead of where Rosario was, albeit with lesser tools. In a similar ballpark to where Tejada, except he's flashed much better tools. His A+ numbers are actually most similar to Reyes' age 19 season, which is also when he got called up to Bing.

If Mcneil could just get a look over Reyes, the young IF'ers in this organization are about the only thing to get excited about over the rest of this year.
Also supposedly SWR hit 100 on the gun in his debut

I think the Mets farm
CMicks3110 : 7/22/2018 7:14 pm : link
can look really really good in about a year between:

Kelenic
Maurcio
Vientos
Newton
Santana
Kay
Peterson
Dunn
Szapucki
Humphreys
McNeil
Alonso
Woods-Richardson
all the RH Relief Prospects

There's also some low level starters that have pitched well so far this year, such as Kevin Smith and Adam Hill.

am excited about SWR. They said he topped out at 95 in the spring. He went through a massive growth spurt late in high school and is probably just coming into his own - he doesn't turn 18 until september. If he's throwing 99 now, think about how he will look fully filled out in 2-3 years.
there are a bunch of players in the low minors that look
CMicks3110 : 7/22/2018 9:39 pm : link
to be developing together that could begin to make an impact around 2021-2022 and that includes

Kelenic, Mauricio, SWR, Vientos, Luis Santana. Man would it be great if they can sign Victor Victor Mesa

A lot of excitement as he progressed through his throwing program, which is why they pushed his first outing back three times.

Keep in mind him hitting 99 in his first pro outing knowing hes only going one inning does NOT signify he throws 99

Any thoughts from Familia trade? I know you've always been on the intl $ train, do you think there's a good plan to use it?

hitting 99 is hitting 99. deGrom was only hitting 99 in his MLB all star appearance knowing he was only throwing 1 inning. The kid is 17, and hitting 99 in one inning at 17 is something to marvel out under any circumstance.

of course Cespedes is a puzzling character. He is not a model teammate, is injury prone, so it is what it is at this point. I think we have to move forward as if he is Wright. If he plays, great, if he doesn't oh well.

I'd trade the crappy spare parts that were already in the mets system and better than what they got back just to get Familia back so they can get the sandwich pick if he walks. That trade was an abomination.

I don't disagree with that. Once the reports came out that it was multiple prospects I was hoping for Kaprelian as the 2nd piece, and I think it's actually pretty fair to prefer Wahl. Kaprelian's upside is probably higher but he's also 24 years old and hasn't pitched in 2 years. I'd still prefer the lotto ticket since we have a bunch of guys like Wahl already but his numbers this year are at least impressive.

Toffey is the piece that feels like a bad joke because barring an unexpected turnaround, he's a non prospect. He doesn't appear to having any projectable tools and his performance on the field hasn't shown anything. They admitted better prospects were on the table if they paid some of Familia's contract, they just "weren't that much better", which I think is enough of a reason to be pissed at the return forgetting all the other circumstances.
