The Giants are expected to sign veteran outside linebacker Connor Barwin, per source. Adds much-needed depth at the position and a quality veteran presence. Also has a strong relationship with LB coach Bill McGovern from their time together in Philadelphia.
Can't wait for his speeches to rile the troops up!
but did give us trouble while in PHI. Also had to have taken a steeply discounted rate considering the current cap projections are around $2M remaining.
he makes sense for the team but I hated the PISS out of this guy when he was on the Eagles. He killed the Giants. The look on his face. Not sure what he has left in the tank, but hell, if he wears Giants blue, I'm rooting for him.
what he has left in the tank. I'd have preferred another safety, but given our constant injuries at LB, it's never a bad idea to have a competent 6th or 7th LB on the roster.

Throughout the Chip Kelly era, Barwin was one of the most valuable members in Billy Davis' 3-4 defense because of his versatility. Barwin could cover, rush the passer, and play the run, but was not a dominant player when doing any of those things.
In his first three seasons with the team, Barwin posted very good numbers overall. However, in Jim Schwartz's scheme, Barwin was asked to beat left tackles mano-e-mano, which was not his strength. Here were Barwin's numbers in his four years with the Eagles:
Playing in a defensive scheme that has historically been very stat-friendly for defensive ends, Barwin posted the worst numbers of his Eagles career in 2016, across the board. Releasing him to save $7,750,000 in cap space during the 2017 offseason was a no-brainer decision.
In Barwin's next stop in Los Angeles with the Rams, in what seemed like a good match, he played in a 3-4 scheme under Wade Phillips, appearing in 14 games and starting 13. He had 34 tackles and 5 sacks.

I hated him too. He lives(think he does still actually live here) in the same neighborhood as I do here in Philly (Fishtown), and I have drank with him a few times(basically sat at the same bar and socialized with each other and other bar guests) and served him twice. He's kind of a turd. Pretty obnoxious when drunk (one time he was with Riley Cooper and that was particularly grating) and kind of smug when I waited on him.
But he does do a lot of charity work around here and is pretty principled. He drives a hybrid, very much into the greener side of things and became very attached to Philly in general. I dont see any of that happening in NY.
There's plenty of time to fill some holes on the roster
given our waiver claim position. Barwin may or may not stick (anyone know if he signed at the vet minimum?) but I suspect that we'll have a number of players come in after cuts this year.
there's two on the roster already, AO (according to Gettleman) and Goodson, if they want to run 4-3 looks.
Ok I still dont know what you mean but cool. I think we all know Ogletree and Goodson are the starters. Munson, Herzlich, RayRay, etc are backup MLB Id like to upgrade off of. LBs get injured often and Id prefer not to see any of that group starting in 2018.

He took your "MLB" to mean MLB in a 43. You mean ILB though. As in either ILB spot of the 34. Not MLB.

Ahh, no shit! We should get together for a game some time. Where do you usually watch them?
Giants & Philadelphia are very interested in another ex-Ram, Connor Barwin. If Big Blue gets him, expect it to be to mentor Lorenzo Carter, a player Bechter has been very high on. Bechter tried to get Arizona to snatch Barwin before the Rams signed him to play out of position in 2016. Philly wants him to remain an OLB but Giants see him as an edge rusher

I got a slingbox setup at my parents house, so I don't need to leave the house to watch which came in handy last season.
I live 2 blocks from the Memphis Taproom, so that's a go to spot.
I like to do some drinking at El Camino across from the Piazza.
There are some good players available especially at safety. I would love Hankins back on a 1 year deal. That would provide great depth and allow Harrison, Tomlinson, Hill, Hankins, and Mauro to rotate to keep the line fresh through the season.

Hankins is awful.
Hankins is awful? Granted he is not an all-pro but he was a very good starter for the Giants. IIRC he was one of the only serviceable starters in 2015.
Barwin is a good pickup to add depth and a situational pass rusher, granted they don't ask him to do much more than to rush the passer. Fresh bodies to rush the passer in the 4th quarter is a good thing.
By DG! Really liking DG. I think this was much needed for depth. Barwin is a blue collar player, gets the job done. Very good pass rusher I was hoping we could get. Cant have enough DE's...

There's one from chopperhatch about encountering CB in a Philly bar after an Eagles playoff loss. Giants cap, and some comments, got a thumbs down and a "fuck you" from CB.
A number of posters wanted Barwin in the '09 draft. Much of the discussion centered on whether he would last to the second round.
He did, and was available at pick #45. Giants went with Clint Sintim. Texans took CB with the very next pick, #46.
Looking at the draft data, CB has serious athlete credentials, e.g., 40" vertical.
Cut Jerry freeing up some more coin. Add Dez, DRC, Darkwa, N Bowman, and a vet swing OT all for close to the minimum. :)
No way to Dez. Not unless they can guarantee that Dez wont say one word during the entire season. Hell, his facial expressions and body language are just as bad. Now way, no how.
Hell yes to DRC and Darkwa. I would give Breeland a long look as well. Giants with Schurmur will be a better atmosphere than what he had in DC. He is supposedly great in the film room and on the chalk board. Up and down in DC but again, I think the Giants can keep his head on straight.
Always killed us and had the most punchable face in the NFL! With that said, of course Im happy hes now on our side. If hes still got 6-7 sacks in him, he would be a nice addition to our questionable pass rush.

He is formidable in size. But very lean. Guy is very athletic looking

Yes, Hankins is very awful. One-dimensional, fatally-flawed player. A complete liability on defense.
It is why he remains unsigned despite:
1) 26 years old
2) healthy
3) no character concerns
4) plays a premiere position (D-Line)
Last offseason, Giants had zero interest in resigning him, and it took the Colts who had the worst D-Line in the league months into FA to sign him. Then they cut him in March, it's been 4 months later, and still unsigned.
I like this move IF Barwin can still be a "pass rush specialist" at age 31. If we "hit" here and he has a season left in him, GREAT cause we only have one pass-rusher and that isn't enough. If he is "average" now but still better than what we have, well, its a "good" signing at least.
But what is also important is how much he can mentor guys like Carter, McIntosh (if healthy) and BJ Hill if not others. In reading posts, I get the impression he is a good lockerroom guy and will bring leadership to the defense. If he does only that very well, I mean, it is an "acceptable" signing at least for the money he got.
I'm praying for a bounce-back year and 8 sacks with good pressures and QB hits....hope that isn't asking too much for a 31 year old.
Pugh usually was solid. I think Gettleman didn't pay him because he didn't feel Pugh was worth the money, especially for a guy who year after year couldn't play 16 games.
a 5 year $45 million dollar contract just a few months ago. He's a good player, that proves it. As others have pointed out, injuries have been an issue.
People like to talk nostalgically about David Dheil. IMO, Pugh is better than DD was. However, for the most part, DD was on the field.

Servicable, unspectacular starter when healthy, but the Giants made the right decision.
Injured all the time. Seemed a bit soft, and disinterested in getting his injured ass back on the game.
Seems a tad on the outspoken side. Touch of renegade...but I don't really know. Who knows what to expect from him here?
He can be a dynamic edge rusher. 5 sacks for the Rams and didn't start to my knowledge. How many Giants had 5 sacks last season? Kenard had 5 and OV 6.5. JPP is gone.
Heading into camp the Giants had 1 edge rusher - Olivier Vernon. When they line up in a 40 front - and that will be a lot in subpackages - they had NOBODY to rush opposite OV.
Carter is not a "hand in the dirt" Edge Rusher.
Barwin will be the starting LDE in the subpackages and is not only an upgrade but a necessity, even if I don't personally like him. They really had nobody they could hang their hat on there
Neither Pugh nor Hankins were terrible. Neither was worth the money, which is the exact thing people complain about with the contracts handed out to Snacks, Vernon and Jenkins.
There is a decision point on whether or not Pugh and Hankins were worth resigning and the answer was no. Pugh was too often injured and more of a versatile player than a dominant one and Hankins wanted too much money for his expected production.

Have you seen the Arizona Cardinals O-Line?
That's a OL-desperate team who massively overpaid.

Hankins' NFL career is most likely over...at the age of 26.
He plays a premiere position on the D-Line. If nobody signed him by now, nobody will ever sign him.

I'd love to ask him if Pugh was doing his favorite team a favor opting not to block him often in that 27-0 embarrassment in '14.

Hehe.
This feels like a move Bettcher was pushing for...for the reasons y'all cited, situational depth, 3-4 guy, veteran leadership

I would be shocked if the Giants don't add a veteran ILB before the season. IMO the primary backup ILB isn't currently on the roster. Perhaps NaVorro Bowman who is still a free agent.
Barwin - ( New Window )
It's Ogletree if they run 4-3 looks.

Lets put it this way. I want a backup vet MLB or ILB familiar with a running a LB unit (this happens in both 4-3 and 3-4.

I got a slingbox setup at my parents house, so I don't need to leave the house to watch which came in handy last season.
I live 2 blocks from the Memphis Taproom, so that's a go to spot.
I like to do some drinking at El Camino across from the Piazza.
Oh my God I live in walking distance from you. I technically live in East Kenzo but its all really the same.
Glad to see I have a Giants fan close to me. My wife is an Eagles fan and it's tough to find other Giants fans.
According to Dave thats what hes being signed for

The #Giants signed veteran pass-rusher Connor Barwin to a 2-year deal worth up to $5M, source said. Back in the NFC East.
Welcome to the NY Football Giants Connor!!!
Now go sack Wentz.
He did have 5 sacks with LAR.
And Philly don't run a 3-4 anymore which he is more suited for.

He is formidable in size. But very lean. Guy is very athletic looking
Setting the bar pretty low. Lots of players used to bitch-slap Pugh.
No one embarrassed him like Barwin as far as I can remember.
Then knock him over like a bowling pin.
Only question is at 32, does he have anything left?

Situationally, hes an upgrade. Will be 32 in mid-October. For 2 years? zero to lose imv

uhh 32? Are you kidding me? of course he has something left.

No one embarrassed him like Barwin as far as I can remember.
Pugh sucked WHEN he played.
Gettleman didn't even place a call to Pugh's agent. Had less than zero interest of even wondering what his asking price was.
Pugh is small, has short arms, gets walked back into the pocket against big DTs, and cannot drive-block in the run game.
He could kick in a pinch ? I think he was a Kicker before being drafted .
Pugh usually was solid. I think Gettleman didn't pay him because he didn't feel Pugh was worth the money, especially for a guy who year after year couldn't play 16 games.

He can be a dynamic edge rusher. 5 sacks for the Rams and didn't start to my knowledge. How many Giants had 5 sacks last season? Kenard had 5 and OV 6.5. JPP is gone.
Hope for the best.

Linked is recent article that includes a comment about his agent, Kevin Poston.
