10 highly drafted NFL players facing put-up-or-shut-up 2018

Giants CB Eli Apple:

No other way to stay it — he was a bad Apple in 2017, deemed a "cancer" by teammate Landon Collins and eventually suspended by the club. Despite speculation about an offseason divorce, Apple was ultimately granted a fresh start by New York's new brain trust. Now it's up to him to prove he can hold down the starting post opposite No. 1 corner Janoris Jenkins.

49ers DL Arik Armstead

Patriots DL Malcom Brown

Bengals CB Darqueze Dennard

Jaguars DE Dante Fowler

Cowboys DE Randy Gregory

Bills DE Shaq Lawson

Broncos OLB Shane Ray

Bears WR Kevin White

Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston

For full write-ups on each, click on link. Any draftniks surprised about how some of these guys turned out, at least to date?

Winston:

Tampa Bay picked up his option for 2019, but that was before Winston was slapped with a three-game suspension for his latest serious lapse in judgment.

With 59 turnovers in three seasons, his decision making on the field also leaves something to be desired. GM Jason Licht rolled the dice by drafting Winston No. 1 overall in 2015, and it would be yet another gamble to give up on a potential franchise quarterback given their scarcity.

But can the Bucs trust Winston enough to give him a nine-figure contract? Or could he find himself in a situation similar to Robert Griffin III's in Washington, where he fails to regain his job and finds himself a healthy scratch all year before being discarded?

It's the biggest dilemma for a regime also trying to discern if DE Noah Spence and CB Vernon Hargreaves will pan out.

I’d add Flowers

to that list
Gregory art deserves mention. Heneeds to be on that list every year.

More suspensions than games played. Fringe player at best until he plays more than A handful of games. Even then he’s riskier than building a house on the edge of a cliff on the San Andeas fault line
Agree with

both of you. Of course and as I’ve opined several times, watch Flowers have a solid year at ORT and then LEAVE in FA

what do you consider a solid year?

I mean, if he continues to make the same mistakes, that may be "masked" by the fact that, Shurm is no idiot like his predecessor, and puts a TE over there to help him....

Solari couldn't coach him up, and I think what you see is what you get....and I think Flowers, if he has, what for him is a decent year, will test the free agent waters, looking for that big payday(look what Pugh and Richburg got), that he won't get from the Giants.....
I am not giving up

on Apple or Flowers. At least these guys have the physical talent required. Pugh & Richburg did not.
Just because they

were drafted high doesn't mean they're no good if they don't live up to the hype.

You don't get rid of "good" players.

Would you cut Apple or Flowers? and replace with who?

A breakout year. A year they expected when they drafted him. Not predicting it at this point, but given our recent lack of OL production, it would be our luck that he finally gets it, finally masters his mistakes AND THEN LEAVE
I'll be ecstatic if
QB Snacks : 8/7/2018 11:42 am : link
flowers has a good enough year where he warrants a big contract and leaves. Bodes well for this years team.
Of course, who wouldn’t be?
Big Blue '56 : 8/7/2018 11:53 am : link
It just would be an overall waste if he finally got it after 4 years and then left

For sure. Although i'm pretty sure our cap is in pretty good shape even factoring in extensions for obj/collins.
this list could use 20 or so more players (at least)
GiantsLaw : 8/7/2018 2:22 pm : link
and I think it should be reserved for players that have been in the league longer.

the reason he is not on the list is that everyone knows he is done and irrelevant. If we had another RT option he would be gone.

To be clear, are you referring to TOP or HIGHLY DRAFTED players? That’s what the article is about
