35 year fan, usually use the four preseason games to look for some diamonds in the rough. But mostly, to be honest, simply pray for health.
Some standouts from years back were moments like Rodney Hampton taking a first touch 90 yards to the house. Or Victor Cruz blossoming out of nowhere.
But this year, particularly, coming off an off-season where so much of the focus was placed on drafting a QB, I must say I'm very interested in tomorrow's game. Almost so much so that I might pop off the NJ Transit and walk in for some tickets.
This is a very big moment for Davis Webb; no other way to put it, big. He doesn't need to be Tom Brady in the next four games, but he absolutely needs to flash something. Command of the team, on-the-fly adjustments, his mid range accuracy, his strengths around the long ball. If all goes well, Eli is our starter this year so this tape will be very closely scrutinized. I really am rooting hard for this kid, because if he's truly successful, it sets us up for years to come.
Am I the only one more intrigued for this first preseason game than almost any other in recent memory? For some reason this feels more important.
Let's kick ass for once.
The only issue I have is that the second-team OL might be so bad that Webb will not have any time back there. Really hoping that is not the case, as that will ruin any QBs chance to stand out.
Rest assured, Browns want one too. They havent had one in a while.

I agree. It is a different situation now with the Giants not drafting a QB in the first. There is more pressure on Webb for that reason alone.

I personally don't think Barkley will play that much. It think they are going to want to give Barkley a ton of touches this year. Rookies sometimes hit a wall. Now, if anybody can avoid that wall I would assume it is Barkley because of how well he takes care of his body, how well he listens to vets, etc. But, until he actually does it we have no idea so I think the idea will be to enough with Barkley to get him ready for the season but also not overuse him either in the preseason.
Browns' plan is Tyrod Taylor for a series or two and then a lot of Baker Mayfield. Expect similar for Eli/Webb.
As the cliche goes, the QBs don't play each other. But trading possessions is as close as it gets, and seeing what the Browns got for their #1 overall vs what the Giants got for a third rounder does pump the viewing interest for an opening exhibition game.
Second and third games will be more informative about the starting 2018 Giants.
Get the shine box Mayfield - ( New Window )
Hopefully he will get some reps with the first team to really see what he has
Remember Eli's first few regular season games?

but be careful how you judge Webb. Judging on stats may not be the best thing. Some of the stuff you alluded to. I want to see control of the offense, the players, the situation, the calls, making adjustments, making the correct reads regardless of the result of the play.

I'll take it a step further. Remember Eli's first 4 years? I stated this back in another thread the other day; In 2007 against Minnesota a good portion of the fans were calling for Jared Lorenzen to play. It was rough.
The only issue I have is that the second-team OL might be so bad that Webb will not have any time back there. Really hoping that is not the case, as that will ruin any QBs chance to stand out.
I am assuming that Eli's time will be very brief, and in contrast the new 1st string OL will need a lot of preseason playing time to be able to operate as a unit.
(Granted there has to be time allotted to see if those in BU roles can do the job or need to be replaced with vets from other teams at cutdown time.)
So my guess is we'll see both backup QBs with the starting OL. Listening to Shurmur, QB changes may be more "situational" than in the past; a little more back and forth during the game.
I'm excited to see;
-all the new rookie talent
-the new look of the defense
-new head coach, new outlook
-a surprise or 2 in pre-season; so many new players to check out

What??? Webb's job wasnt taken as I understand it. Webb transferred because of Mahomes.
Funny. He was that fiery when Webb told him to get towels yet he treats the 4th string qb at Cleveland about the same. If not worse.

That's funny but not surprising. He was talking back more because he seems like a dick rather than standing up for himself due to a lack of respect. Also, it could have been a harmless request like, "Hey can you get some towels?" I find it a little weird if one freshman was talking to another freshman like a dick. I'd love to hear Webb's take.
No, I dont think I do. Mayfield made it sound as tho Webb took the job over by default after he got hurt. But yea he transferred bwcause I am pretty sure OU was his dream school.

My response was to your comment where you said What? Webb's job wasn't taken. What did you mean by that? Was that two totally different situation that you are referring to or one?

Well, I was referring to what made WEBB transfer. Nevermind, that response was before I clarified for myself what went down.
Although truth be good I always get excited for the first preseason game, It s the beginning of another football season.
Over the past few years, I was seeing our guys get abused and knew that no matter what the play calling would be in September, you are not going to overcome a physical mismatch.
So, even though we are all excited to see Barkley, Odell, Webb, and others on the field... I will be happy if we are able to push the pile on offense and stuff the run on defense because if we can do that in the regular season then we have a chance.
