Lucas Giolito: 7-8, 5.97
Giolito leads the entire AL in runs allowed, so there's no excuse not to put runs on the board. The big story tonight will be whether or not Sevy can get back on track. We'll find out if he's been tipping his pitches or if it's another issue.
Kind of wish Boone would tinker with the lineup a little less, but it is what it is. Not the end of the world.
Bring out the brooms because we need this sweep.
Count me in this group as well. I don't get it at all.
I can see dropping a slumping guy or moving a real hot hitter up in his place, but to just shuffle guys around for no obvious reason, makes no sense to me.
It shouldn't take this long into the season for Boone to figure out where guys belong in the lineup. That's what spring training is for, and maybe a week or two to start the season but to still be doing this in August is puzzling to say the least.
I guess Boone is just making people feel comfortable in any spot in the batting order.
8+ ERA over the last few weeks. Not good.
If true, the one hit was a bunt vs the shift no?
He is really struggling lately

More of the same:
Hanging sliders and diminished velocity four seamers.
Hope he settles in now
Hope he settles in now
Yea, good luck with that.
96 or 98 makes no difference if location is bad. His velocity will increase once he is comfortable and into the game.
I was told he was in a hot streak and one of our better hitters lately, and that my thinking was wrong.

Is 1-20 on this road trip why on earth is he batting clean up?

Well that and they actually won 2 games....

This is the exact, same, team that went into Boston. Only exception was CC's performance last night.

..........I said going INTO Boston. We won 2 games (one, barely) against one of the very worst teams in the league.
Even Severino's outs are smoked.

Seems like he's topping out @ 96 - which is definitely a few ticks lower than what we're used to. I hope he's not hurt. His stuff just isn't biting the same way it was before.

Location obviously matters more, but whenever a pitcher has diminished velo it raises an eyebrow. This is the same guy who has thrown more 99+ mph pitches than anyone in this league by leaps and bounds - so, seeing him sit at 96 and get hit like this just makes me wonder if he's fatigued or not 100% healthy.
Whether Sevy struggles or not, there's no reason for us not to put runs on the board against Giolito. He's been horrendous. Compromised lineup or not, we should be lighting this guy up.
Nice call, my friend!

He does not throw 99 all the time. He avgs 97.6 or so. I saw a couple 98s in the 1st.
It is location and a cement mixer slider that have been most of the problem along with some pitch tipping.
No offense Arc, but Sanchez scares me this year. I can imagine him giving up runs due to his inability to contain pitches in key playoff moments. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on the injury while he blows bubbles on his jog to first, but he needs to be better defensively.

Romine has hit very well with RISP this year. Can't wait for Sanchez to get back - but he has at least been effective there.

He's not good defensively but his bat is a lot more of a threat than Romine or Higgy's. I think people are too down on him right now, This guy carried this entire offense when he came up in 2016 - he was very good last year, and is clearly the most talented C on the roster (and one of the most talented in the entire sport)
He will get it together and this lineup will be better when he's back in it.

Severino and Sabathia both have worse ERAs this season with Romine behind the plate... in the case of Sabathia, it's significantly worse. Nothing about Romine's defense made me feel better this past weekend in Fenway. I think that's overrated.

Not saying he does - just seems like there's a little less giddyup than usual and his stuff hasn't had the same bite.
9 pitch 2nd inning was just what the doctor ordered, though. Hopefully he can get on a bit of a roll here now that he's got a 4 run lead and can attack.

Its a weird and bad fucking dilemma we have at C. The mobility issue behind the plate is confounding to me and one that can be taught. I also think he could use dropping some weight too. If not only for mobility the strain on his legs would be lessened. 230 is a BIG catcher unless you are Jose Molina. But he never let balls by him.
Yup. The sooner he gets back the better too. I want him getting as much time as he can get to get his bat going and be smokin by October.

I think Boone let it be known that he wasn't happy with Gary's weight this season. That's not an issue that will get solved before Spring. I just don't think the individual performance of our best pitchers suffers at all with Gary back there. (Just like Pettitte and Sabathia were still great in the playoffs with Posada catching, but Burnett needed Molina.) Tanaka was GREAT last postseason with Gary catching him. Plus, Cleveland and Boston just ran wild on us recently with Romine back there. The pitchers are certainly responsible for part of that, but I think teams do respect Gary's arm more.
I think it's important that the Yanks get Gary back when he's completely healthy and in a proper frame of mind as opposed to getting him back ASAP.
I dont disagree. But that weakness has cost us multiple runs in singular games multiple times and Im pretty sure cost us 1 or 2 actual victories last year. That part is inexcusable to me.
Boom!
