Webb had a rough night

Ten Ton Hammer : 8/9/2018 9:29 pm
but at least he's not Josh Allen.

It was 4th down
dep026 : 8/9/2018 9:31 pm : link
It looked funny but what was e suppose to do?

I mean Webb just looke dawful.
Webb cllearly deserves
UESBLUE : 8/9/2018 9:32 pm : link
more time to prove himself but...is Bridgewater a consideration? We need a real #2.
It's the first preseason game
Jay on the Island : 8/9/2018 9:35 pm : link
So there is no need to panic. With that said I expected more. His accuracy was very poor tonight.
Webb has expressed an interest in coaching
Go Terps : 8/9/2018 9:37 pm : link
He might want to start that career sooner than later, because he isn't an NFL quarterback.
Webb looked as bad as anyone Ive ever seen
twostepgiants : 8/9/2018 9:51 pm : link
In a preseason game vs backups.

And it was the Cleveland Browns backups.
Lauletta
Steve in South Jersey : 8/9/2018 9:53 pm : link
looked a whole lot better than Webb tonight.
Unfortunately
lax counsel : 8/9/2018 9:54 pm : link
He looks like the same guy he was in college. Trouble reading a defense and then accurately delivering a pass. His individual physical attributes are good, but there’s just something not there when he’s puts it all together. That’s why he was a late third round pick. If I was a betting man, I’d say the Giants next true franchise qb isn’t on the roster yet.
I’m sure Webb was nervous,
Section331 : 8/9/2018 9:58 pm : link
but wow, was he wild.
I am not convinced lauletta can be a nfl qb
bhill410 : 8/9/2018 9:58 pm : link
With that long of a motion
Laudetta might overtake him soon
spike : 8/9/2018 9:58 pm : link
there is no scholarship with the new GM/HC
They could really use a veteran backup
Greg from LI : 8/9/2018 10:02 pm : link
Because Webb looks terrible and noodle arm Lauletta ain't much to write home about either.
My guess is that he watches the film, sees his mistakes...
kinard : 8/9/2018 10:04 pm : link
... and plays better on Friday. He's still has three games left to show his stuff. I'm not giving up on him yet.
Seen this before
ThatLimerickGuy : 8/9/2018 10:06 pm : link
He is thinking too much and not just reacting.

You can almost see his brain working during the play.

The good ones can just think instinctively and make rapid decisions based on what they see.

Webb is going to be good. Give him a minute.
The curse of the Reese
eric2425ny : 8/9/2018 10:08 pm : link
Third rounders continues...

Seriously though, let’s see a few more outings before drawing any sort of conclusions. Most concerning to me at this point is the fact that we don’t really have a legitimate third WR or third CB for that matter. Hopefully someone steps up.
Webb was bad
AcesUp : 8/9/2018 10:09 pm : link
But this is 1/2 of the first preseason game, in the first real action in forever. Can we pump the brakes on the doom and gloom? We have a 37 year old starter, our backups will be developmental guys. That's how you build a roster with an older starting QB. Who exactly are we bringing in as a veteran backup? Kyle Orton?
They should have given Webb the 1st sting OL.
since1925 : 8/9/2018 10:10 pm : link
At least, for one series. That would have been a little fairer for him.

Yep, he looked awful and very inaccurate. But he should have been put in a situation with a little more help.

He will get action with the first line in the next few games, the first one is always like this.
Webb was supposed to challenge for a starting spot.
Giant John : 8/9/2018 10:17 pm : link
Any more outings like that and he will be watching his TV at home.
Eli
Iamhagg1 : 8/9/2018 10:18 pm : link
Better pray he doesn’t get hurt and can play for another 5 years because Webb is trash. 17 should be the backup... Was expecting much more from Webb, but you can see the reason why Mayfield beat him out as a walk-on. Just face the fact he doesn’t have the IT factor. He stinks! It’s okay he stinks, just move one from it...

Starting spot this year? The last I checked he is a third round pick looking to win the primary backup role and develop with hopes of being a starter someday.
Davis
CT Charlie : 8/9/2018 10:22 pm : link
will be fine.
Just going over some excuses on here
twostepgiants : 8/9/2018 10:25 pm : link
It was his “first real game action in forever’

- isnt that true of every single other player on the field with him tonight?

It would have been “fairer” for him to get a series with the starters

- didnt he play against backups? So he needs starters to play vs backups? If he cant play against backups then who can he play against in a real game?

Again, he played against guys who were not good enough to start on the Cleveland Browns - who have won 1-31 in the last 2 years.
To me
NikkiMac : 8/9/2018 10:26 pm : link
It looked like Webb was nervous and thinking too much and it showed in his footwork and he wasn’t getting the right drop going back to pass however it looked like as he settled down he was starting to get sharper and then he got pulled ..... I wouldn’t give up on him yet !

And honestly, we can't be sure Eli is going to be any great shakes either.
If your not an accurate passer
Hammer : 8/9/2018 10:34 pm : link
You cannot be an NFL quarterback.

The one play that stands out in my mind was the long flag pattern where the receiver was open between the corner back and the safety. Web had time to see it open up and time to make the throw. He missed it horribly.

I don't care how nervous Web was nor how inexperienced he is.

He showed that he is inaccurate. He's not the guy.
Actually I'm a bit glad he did bad
montanagiant : 8/9/2018 10:36 pm : link
Now we see what kind of mental make-up he has. Kid has pressure on him due to the fiasco last year was and he either steps up and comes out blazing next week or we know he is not worth it.

It's mainly in the head, let's see what kind of focus he has
Webb..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/9/2018 10:36 pm : link
should probably get the benefit of the doubt for being too amped, but what really was worrying is what Hammer said.

Webb had time to make quite a few throws and just flat out missed.

All reports indicate that Webb didn't look anything like this
eclipz928 : 8/9/2018 10:38 pm : link
in practice. I'm sure some players, especially at the QB position, take longer than others to shake off the nerves. Way too early to start writing this guy off.
Jay Cutler
spike : 8/9/2018 10:38 pm : link

I like 17 better
JPinstripes : 8/9/2018 10:39 pm : link
The kid's poised back there, looks like he belongs - Webb not so much.
I was never a believer in Webb
Jay on the Island : 8/9/2018 10:39 pm : link
I won't base his future outlook on tonight but his accuracy wasn't just a little off tonight. He was way off and most of his throws. He has very impressive arm strength but if he doesn't read defenses better and dramatically improve his accuracy he could be out of the league after his rookie deal expires like Nassib.

Lauletta on the other hand played pretty well. He might actually make a run at the backup spot.
Good point..
Thunderstruck27 : 8/9/2018 10:44 pm : link
we need to reserve the excuses for Eli
I'm a Webb fan ...
Manny in CA : 8/9/2018 10:45 pm : link

But to me he's trying way too hard to be an Eli Manning.

He's a lot more athletic, which means he can move & run better. He has just as big an arm; but he MUST avoid doing what may keep Manning out of the HOF - keep throwing the ball high.

If I were the QB coach, I'd be SO tempted to SCREAM into his helmet mike - Throw to the numbers !

The thing I dwell..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/9/2018 11:05 pm : link
on with Webb is that there aren't many historical success of guys recently who sit for a year, basically as a redshirt, who then have the skillset to be an eventual starter.

He was basically treated as if he didn't belong in the league last year as they didn't even get him meaningful reps in practice.

When someone is that significantly behind the curve, I can't imagine it is good.

Being a hard worker and student is great, but QB isn't really a position I believe you learn how to do the basics. You either have them or you don't.
Webb is a book smart overachiever
slickwilly : 8/9/2018 11:05 pm : link
Let me explain that. We've all heard how meticulous Webb is with his note taking and his binders. He seems very much like people I have met in real life who are very intelligent, but the issue is the translation of that knowledge to what it is meant for. Webb seems so mechanical locking in on receivers because he has the "book smarts" of what he thinks is the right read, but not the natural ability to diagnose a D and react to it real time.

The overachiever part also goes back to past experience. How may times did you see a kid who was really good at a sport, but in the back of your mind you were also thinking if I got to play whatever sport year round like this kid I would kick his ass?

Webb seems like he has gotten to where he is because of a great work ethic which is comendible for sure, but I think he lacks that elite talent and natural ability to excel at the highest level of the sport.

Me too, stupid front office. Can’t draft a guy in the third round in 2017 that looks as promising as the #1 overall pick in 2018!

The guy doesn't have it. It's no insult to him, but he doesn't have it. Any snaps they give him moving forward are wasted.
Webb will be fine

Paul Dottino has promised. He s why the Giants didn t draft a quarterback

We can trust Paul, remember last season when he told us how hard Hart and Flowers were working, that they s be fine.

Paul s objective and honest, we can trust him....trust me!
to my eyes, on that run for first down inside the 10
ColHowPepper : 8/9/2018 11:45 pm : link
Webb did not look very athletic at all, stumbling, a bit stiff as he reversed field (if one can call it that), not fluid at all. I said to myself, holy shite, he's a bigger, stronger version of an Eli bumbling run.

First preseason game so no final judgments but

I’ve said from the start he has the qualities of a great future coach (QB coach or whatever) but I just am not sold on him as a QB.

Kent Graham ceiling.
The First Half Was Terrible
Giants34 : 8/10/2018 1:11 am : link
One of the worst halves of football I remember a QB playing during the preseason. You people who advocated taking Barkley over the QBs better hope that Lauletta is the answer, because it's difficult to envision any QB playing that badly possessing the ability to turn it around.

Look, you guys might not want to face facts, but 3rd round and later QBs rarely translate to anything big in the NFL. Franchise QBs come from the very top. We passed on our chance at one because our GM literally mocks the use of analytics. As good as Barkley may be, if we don't have a QB, none of it will matter. The fact that you Barkley enthusiasts still don't get that is dumbfounding to me.
I made a comment earlier this week...
Jim in Tampa : 8/10/2018 6:16 am : link
That I thought Webb might even take over for Eli at some point this year. It was based on the knowledge that Webb seemed "OK" during last year's pre-season games and we were hearing good things about him in camp. But I forgot that the major knock on Webb was an inaccurate arm.

It doesn't matter what other positive attributes you have as a QB. If you're not an accurate passer you can't even be a backup in the NFL.

It's like the line from an Elvis Costello song..."Good manners and bad breath get you nowhere."
He threw a perfect ball
Kevin(formerly Tiki4Six) : 8/10/2018 6:30 am : link
To the left corner for what should have been a TD but Raymond turned the wrong way. This kid was amped up for sure, but his WR’s and TE’s he was throwing to all suck.

I suspect he will be better next week.
not going to take any conclusion from webb far yet
micky : 8/10/2018 6:34 am : link
but..if this pans out like last night, then not grabbing a qb in draft, may loom big downline here

but wait.....
Shurmur may be a QB whisperer,
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 8/10/2018 7:01 am : link
but with Webb he is going to have to shout. I don't think Webb makes it to the 4th preseason game. I feel bad for him bc he has worked hard and he does seem to be a good guy, but he just can't think the game fast enough, and his inaccuracy is appalling.
Webb
giantfan2000 : 8/10/2018 7:17 am : link
the worst problem for Webb was Mayfield was playing on the Browns
so you could starkly tell a rookie QB that is the real deal vs a QB that had no business being out there

I think there is a real shot that Webb doesn't make the roster..
