Being a 3rd down or short yardage back still requires the requisite physical talent. In a small space you'd want someone with explosion or size. Not someone who looks knee deep in cement. I just don't see it with Stewart.
and a bad lockerroom. Now we sign a veteran who by all accounts is a great leader, can mentor Barkley, and he is a wasted signing?
It's a salary cap league. You don't pay premiums for intangible things like 'leadership', especially when you also are taking on a LB on a bloated contract who is also a 'leader'. But at least Ogletree is a starting-quality player. Nobody who's thinking clearly or spending their own dollars pays a premium for an old backup after drafting a superstar.

because he actually picked up a 3rd and short first down tonight.
Lots of hyperbole here
Exactly, he’s the short yardage guy, we haven’t had one of those in years. I bet Gallman gets a split share of the touches with Stewart behind Barkley to start the year and gets phased in more and more.
Holy smokes. He's not even going to be asked to do anything close to that anymore. He's backup now. RB appears to be the least of our worries at the moment.
Some of the plays they called for Stewartt are plays he will not be featured on in the regular season. I honestly think they just want to pace Barkley.
He took a guy many had given up on last year - Latavius Murray and integrated him into the offense quite well after Cook was injured.
I would imagine Barkley will get the majority of snaps until they get to the goalline and when he's spelled, it will be with Gallman.
The contract thing is so overblown. He's only guaranteed $1.4M this year, which isn't too much over the vet minimum and is over a million less than Rhett Ellison's guaranteed salary. People see raw numbers and have a cow.

He’s a solid short yardage guy and a veteran leader at a cheap price relatively speaking. It’s the typical panic meltdown over losing preseason week 1 at BBI. I was just happy they scored on their first drive, I remember them looking like total shit every opening preseason drive in the McAdoo offense even when he was just the offensive coordinator.
Of the signing at the time it occurred. Just a dumb amount of money, how many running backs in this league have a 4 million dollar cap hit? To say he is only a third down back misses the boat that it’s a bizarre signing at that number
His salary puts him at 22nd overall and if you go by cap hit Â
He is actually around 16/17 overall. Combined with Barkley that’s a whopping 11 million committed to running back position. When the signing occurred the giants had to have known that it was likely they would draft a running back in 1st or second. To commit that type of resources to a lower tier position while there were so many holes on this roster is just confusing.
And to just further pile on, isn’t the point of drafting a running back at 2 overall that they are a 3 down back? Can we stop saying short yardage back, you think Elliot or Bell is coming out on 3rd and 1??? We drafted Barkley because he is allegedly a generational running back, if that’s the case he better be in there on short yardage plays.
Guys like Solder, Stewart, Barwin, Thomas and Ogletree are all veteran guys brought in to show the younger pups how to go about business and be a professional in the NFL.
Its an awful contract if you're only looking at production on the field and where else we could've used those resources. However, Stewart is a great locker room leader. He's perfect having around Barkley. That mentorship could end up being invaluable.
Its basically a 1 year deal with Stewart I'd suggest just swallowing it as that.. and also give him more than just a few preseason snaps.

Barkley is as clean a prospect as you can get. The guy says and does everything right. I’m not against Stewart —I really liked seeing him pick up that 3rd down. But Barkley is one of the highest paid RBs in the league and is a clean prospect. The team didn’t invest another salary at RB because of Barkley. Stewart has been firmly the second back on depth chart and gets lots of reps with the ones. They signed him because they like him as a back. Right or wrong. There is a narrative floating around here that doesn’t match the facts.
In just 1 preseason game, Barkley showed he doesn’t like to pound Â
Stewart may not have the skills he once had, but he can still do that job.
I would not be surprised to see Barkley and Stewart together in the backfield on some short yardage plays.
Guys like Solder, Stewart, Barwin, Thomas and Ogletree are all veteran guys brought in to show the younger pups how to go about business and be a professional in the NFL.
Solder, Thomas, and Barwin are solid examples of bringing in pros with the added benefit of them being able to help younger players.
But those guys are also playing for or trying to push for needed roles. It makes no sense to try to explain this as "well they need a short yardage back" when they spent a 2nd overall pick for a franchise RB like that makes sense. Barkley's worth the pick but he should come off the field in 3rd-and-1s? What the hell are people talking about?
If you needed a big back to take snaps, just sign Darkwa again and let him fight with Gallman. It's like fans are compelled to defend this move by instinct, and the defenses in play here are all contradictory. They "need leadership" after spending all offseason brining in guys who already have that trait.
"People are going nuts about the contract", yeah, when the team has sunk a ton of money at the RB position that is clearly Barkley's job and other areas of the roster are clearly paper thin. There is no point in handing out $6m over two years for Stewart to "mentor" Barkley. That's why you pay coaches. To do that job.
Will help keep Barkley fresh since stewart Will be the battering ram. As for the screw up on pass pro I'm not sure who was at fault. I do know that Stewart didn't make it this long in this league being poor at pass pro (blitz pickup).
If the going rate for x corner is 4 million but we can’t sign a nickel corner because we have 4 million tied up on a guy who won’t see the field more than 4 times a game I don’t see how percentage is relevant. Or perhaps a slot receiver. However you dice it 4 million could have been much better spent.
the asinine analysis is acting like Stewart is worthless and that any guy can be a short yardage back. It has been as much of a weakness on this team as a nickel CB - you could actually argue that it has been more of an issue.
The asinine assumption is that Stewart is worthless. He actually converted a 3rd and short, which is what he'll be called to do in the regular season. He looked bad on a pitch to the left and a sweep, two plays he likely won't run in the regular season.
If you want to discuss asinine - here's asinine. People see Simmons score a TD in a preseason game and say he could do a better job than stewart.
About whether Simmons could adequately replace Stewart, BUT I'm comfortable predicting that by season's end, Stewart's production will place him in a tier of running backs whose appearance average cap number is, at most, half of his.
Guys like Solder, Stewart, Barwin, Thomas and Ogletree are all veteran guys brought in to show the younger pups how to go about business and be a professional in the NFL.
Like showing ridiculous judgment on pass protection assignments??
Stewart was as slow as molasses last year, that was evident to the fans let alone coaches. They brought him here regardless so its for other reasons to help the team.
short yardage sure, and change of pace I guess... Â
I was most disappointed that he whiffed on a blitz pickup actually, but what the fuck is up with the "we need to cut him" comments?
Then it was a waste of money.

barkley is going to get the majority of the touches
So if he's not here to be a productive back, then why the salary? He's also consuming a roster spot
He had a big whiff In pass pro tonight

Stewart was signed long before the draft.
Lots of hyperbole here

His contract has been very overflated here from the get-go.
He also was signed prior to the draft, where his expected workload would've been more if we didn't draft Barkley.
Stewart can still get a yard in the NFL, and that frankly just isn't impressive or a reason to keep a guy on a roster.
There are 3-4 other backs on the roster who can fill the short yardage role and also contribute in other situations.
More than 90% of his snaps last year were on 1st and 2nd down and was awful. He's slow and lacks explosion.
I don't subscribe to the theory that old broken down former feature backs are good bottom of the roster players.

If Stewart was ever in anyone's plan to have anything approaching more workload, that's comical.
The Panthers didn't have an exceptional WR corps, so the majority of the work was with the RB's and Olsen (and Cam running).
I don't expect Stewart to be a workhorse. I expect him to play solidly in a short yardage and goalline role.
And although he whiffed in pass protection tonight, he's consistently been good in that role.
Acting like he's dogshit is an overreaction, and frankly by a few posters who should know better.
If that's the takeaway from the game tonight, then I'll just agree to agree that you're likely a poster that sucks ass

I'm just curious about whether we competed against anyone else to sign him.
And you're shocked why
