Letís chill in regard to Webb

eric2425ny : 8/9/2018 10:30 pm
The guy is basically a rookie, he barely got any playing time last preseason under our jackass former coach and is learning a brand new offense on top of that. Playing in NY has hyped up expectations. The guy has had more interviews than many starters of other teams this offseason. We will see what he does the rest of preseason. Keep in mind, this Browns defense is honestly not that bad, they lost a lot of close games last year due to their anemic offense, not because the D was allowing teams to drop tons of points.
LOL

This didn't really need a new thread
Jay on the Island : 8/9/2018 10:37 pm : link
Webb isn't a rookie he was healthy all season and received playing time last preseason. It is way too soon to panic but his performance today was very disappointing. His accuracy was way off tonight. Hopefully it is just a case of the jitters.
He's got 3 training camps and 2 seasons under him
montanagiant : 8/9/2018 10:38 pm : link
Rookie he is not. Let's hope this was an aberration but he has you can't claim he's a rookie
It's tough
DavidinBMNY : 8/9/2018 10:38 pm : link
When Baker looks like the real deal. Baker is a rookie too. The tape won't be pretty, and there is a v.er real shot Lauretta laps him by week 3 if Webb doesn't turn it around quickly.

3 training camps, he was drafted last year, this is his second training camp and second preseason. McAdoo gave 90% of the preseason reps to Geno and Josh Johnson last year, Webb hardly saw any preseason action.

Wasn't he drafted in 2017?

agree calling him a rookie is convenient, but I think you're overstating his experience.

And that may end up being the case, but I think itís a bit early to make that call. If he looks like this in a few weeks I would agree.
The red flag to me is that the criticism

of his play coming out of college was very bad accuracy with passes over 10 yards. Tonight confirmed those concerns.
Agree RELAX....
Bluesbreaker : 8/9/2018 10:57 pm : link
he was bad tonight but he has had little live action was I disappointed hell yes . Cut him tomorrow thats a bit over the top . You think Lauletta is all that much better ? Browns defense is better than most here think .
I got there late so the first play I saw was Ogletree getting beat for a TD . Apple wasn't impressive that bothers me a hell of a lot more than who is carrying the clipboard this season . Ran the ball well and defended it well .
Seeing Thompson late to the play is similar to last year all
our holes can't be fixed in one season .
Webb is horseshit
The_Boss : 8/9/2018 11:27 pm : link
Lauletta isnít the answer either. The next NYG franchise QB is likely in college. Iím hoping itís Jake Fromm.
He stinks

In a post that asked what we wanted to see, I stated: I wanted to see Webb look like the "Next Guy" and not Kent Graham.

Tonight s performance was a long way from Kent Graham, just not the way I had hoped.
Looked like he had the jitters
mrvax : 8/9/2018 11:39 pm : link
Give him a few more practice games before we send him to live with Jerry Reese.

I thought Lauletta looked better than Webb did.

Webb missed a couple of throws he's just got to make if he wants to be taken seriously. He works hard, I get it.. he has a good arm, he's a good dude. But there were a couple plays to be made out there and he's just got to make them.

There were a couple of drops - so we have to also be fair. It's a new offense. It's the first preseason game. We can't go nuts over it - but I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed in his performance or felt like he was ready to be a primary backup to Eli. He doesn't look like he's there.
He isn't an NFL QB
Joey in VA : 8/10/2018 1:42 am : link
He's not even capable as a backup, that was an abysmal scatter shot performance in a preseason game with actual decent backup OL protection at times. If he's that fucking nervy at home in a meaningless game against the Browns, I don't want him anywhere near this franchise if it matters. Unless he absolutely kills it next week, and proves this is a hiccup, I don't think he even makes the team.

Can't be too critical after the first preseason game. Those who are already throwing him away are the equivalent to premature ejaculators.

Just relax. His accuracy was high, that's correctable.. He has a live arm with a quick trigger and seems to be confident with his knowledge of the offense. Lets see if he's able to make the corrections.
If Webb
JPinstripes : 8/10/2018 5:13 am : link
can't harness his emotions when getting "amped up" and it leads to erratic and inaccurate QB play then it's Not For Long with the Giants or the NFL.

Pump the brakes on Webb
Rick in Dallas : 8/10/2018 6:14 am : link
last night was his first extended game action. No doubt he looked awful. Let's see how he does the remaining preseason.
On the other hand, Lauletta showed some promise.

"You said I came too early, but it was you who came too late!" Premature my ass!
Webb
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 8/10/2018 6:36 am : link
His mechanics were horrible. His release is slow and awkward. His accuracy was sad.
Davis Webb was a third round pick
Essex : 8/10/2018 7:40 am : link
for every Russell Wilson or Dak Prescott their are many more times probably 10 that fail. He is here this preseason no matter what (and probably will be on he team) so we donít have to overreact by calling him a failure after preseason game 1. With that said, given his pedigree that performance is probably what he is about. Hope to be proven wrong but he was awful last night. I just feel bad for the people who were counting on him, that was a large ask from the get go. Him and Lauletta are low percentage chances of being productive starters, if they werenít they would be picked in the top 10.
It's been a long time sice we had a "rookie" QB in this kind of spot
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 8/10/2018 7:41 am : link
Eli was throwing the ball all over the yard in his first camp, pre-season, season and playoff game. It takes some time and some playing. That isn't to say that he is the answer but more guys look like Davis in their first real outing than like Baker.

The next four weeks will tell us a lot. It's premature to write him off for a 9-22 performance. He did some good things (more bad) but he wasn't sticking it into to DBs chests - he was overthrowing his receivers.

I know it is in vogue at BBI after the last two years to be "realistic" than "hopeful" but the guy has promise. He needs to calm down and trust himself rather than trying to throw it through the wall.
Lauletta maybe but...
nzyme : 8/10/2018 7:53 am : link
He's got no arm. Anything over 25 yards and it looks like he's lobbing it up there. Any safety with any kind of speed is going to intercept those balls. Knowing that information coupled with an outdoor stadium is not a good mix.
Am I the only one wondering..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/10/2018 8:01 am : link
how a 3rd round pick needs this much coddling and instruction to even be able to get onto the field?

I'm actually a little disappointed that for a guy who supposedly studies and is a student of the game, he's still trying to force balls into windows that don't exist - an issue Papa has said the coaches have been working on with him for some time?

I'm not going to make the definitive statement that Webb is done because of that one game, but you have to wonder exactly what QB needs an entire redshirt year and then comes in and looks like the worst player on the field? He had decent protection and still delivered the ball poorly.
You say...

I believe he completed log passes in tight windows in camp.
I hope it's nerves/eagerness once he gets live action that could be corrected.

ZogZerg : 8/10/2018 8:44 am : link
Massive disappointment. He was the main player folks were interested in seeing last night. After all the off-season praise, he was terrible in a real game situation.
He looked awful
Metnut : 8/10/2018 9:10 am : link
but it's the first preseason game. There's plenty more preseason reps for him. Let's take another look at him in 3 weeks.
Freaking unbelievable!
DonnieD89 : 8/10/2018 10:05 am : link
Webb's live action resume consists of last year playing a few series against the Patriots in a preseason game and looking good and playing about a half a game last night in a preseason game and looking bad. Now, posters want him cut. What a bunch of low IQ numb nuts. Let's see what happens after the preseason ends when evaluating him. Let's let it play out.
Last night was very concerning regarding Webb.
Keith : 8/10/2018 10:13 am : link
He showed an inability to make the right read, the inability to throw accurately in short, intermediate and long distances, the inability to anticipate and the inability to show any touch on his throws. He looked like he didn't belong against a bunch of non starters.

That being said, it was the first preseason game in a high pressure situation(for him). Next game will be very telling for Davis Webb and his future. If he looks the same as he did last night, then we better hope Lauletta has what it takes. I'm not asking for him to be Eli Manning next game, just show improvement. Show the ability to read the defense and make accurate throws, thats it.

I am definitely concerned.
Let's remember Eli's first games in the REGULAR season:
KeoweeFan : 8/10/2018 10:16 am : link
"In his fourth start, against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium on December 12, 2004, he ended the day with a 0.0 passer rating and was benched in the second half in favor of Kurt Warner." - Wikipedia

He certainly didn't light it up the previous 3 games either, but the Giants stuck with him and he started game #5.

I was disappointed like the rest of you but I'm willing to give Webb more rope.

I was actually more concerned by his demeanor on the sidelines and his shakey press conference.

We need the "QB Whisperer" to calm the stallion down.
I'm sorry,
Keith : 8/10/2018 10:18 am : link
but you cannot compare Eli Manning in a regular season game against the best defense in the NFL to Davis Webb in a preseason game against backups with no real gameplan.
