QB Davis Webb
Postgame vs Browns
August 9, 2018

Q: What did coach (Pat) Shurmur say to you, you admittedly said you were amped up, what advice did some of the guys give you?
A: Just kind of calm down and play. Guys know I can do it, thereís no doubt about that. I showed signs of it tonight, throwing check downs. They did a good job over there playing two deep, keeping everything in front of them. A few times I was close, I forced a few but I was a foot off for barely missing. At the same time, if I make those throws, we extend drives and get better chances of getting points on the board.

Q: Thatís why the ball sails when youíre amped up? Thatís the reason the ball sails?
A: Yeah, I need to put it on the guyís chinstrap. Thatís what I want to do, thatís what I need to do. Yeah, I missed far too many, but at the same time Iím going to get better from it. Iím not too worried about it. Iím going to learn from it and get better for next week.

Q: Do you have a checklist of things youíre trying to accomplish from week to week? Things to do in terms of improving?
A: One hundred percent. The biggest thing right now is going to the film room with coach (Pat) Shurmur and coach (Mike) Shula and kind of learn from my mistakes. Itís the first preseason game, Iím going to get better from it. This isnít going to be the last time playing, so I got another opportunity next week in Detroit, go against them everyday in practice and going to be a good opportunity for our team to go against someone new on defense. Looking forward to it.

Q: Did it feel good to punch it in after the turnover on the punt?
A: One hundred percent. Scoot ran the ball really well, really proud of Jalen (Simmons). Jerell (Adams) played well, he blocked his butt off and that was a good feeling.

Q: No chance you were sliding on the play before that?
A: I thought I got the first down. I got to watch the spot, it was a questionable spot. We tempoed it and we got a good run out there, O-Line blocked their butts off and we had a good run in.

Q: We know how you like to prepare, how soon are you going to watch the tape? Tonight?
A: Oh yeah, Iíll watch the game tonight once we get out of here and have some questions ready for the morning and kind of get better from it. Itís the first preseason game, itís an extension of training camp and you just try to get better from that.

Q: Did you have a view of Saquon (Barkleyís) run?
A: It was fast, first one. The guy works his butt off and hopefully thereís more to come.

Q:† Coach said you were a little amped up, a little over-excited. Were you excited when you got out there today?
A: I was pumped up. It was my first time playing in a year, so I think the biggest thing was kind of just take a deep breath, let the game come to you. Again, Iím not too worried about it. I know I could make those throws and I know I will. I just got to get even keeled and ready to rock and roll next week.

No sense of reality

Positive thinking is one thing, but utter denial is another. I had great hopes for Webb, but he dashed them pretty quickly.
a little shocked on Webbs performance as a lot of raves by coaches etc

First game for the kid under a new regime, one that he was not drafted by. All of the camp reports were very positive.I don't think he dashed anything last night-You could see he has a strong throwing arm,the talent is there, so now it's up to the coaches to help him move on & improve. He'll get plenty of experience this week as we're scrimmaging the Lions throughout the week before next Friday's pre-season game against them! Webb will be fine!

What are you talking about? Fine if you think he sucks but he pointed out what he needs to do better and how he plans on accomplishing that. What do you people want him to say?
ok

I was not happy but that said he might need to get use to game speed. He has not played enough so hopefully next week he will improve.
One thing Webb..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/10/2018 8:16 am : link
pointed out was Adams blocking.

I saw a thread about Adams being a waste (granted it was started by a Simo), but that's the kind of thing that will stand out for the coaches. His blocking, if it continues like that will keep him on the roster. It wasn't just on the TD play - but on several others.

the other guy who blocked well on that was Scott #68. I had to look him up on the roster, he's a 6-year vet, so probably not a lot of hope of sticking, but he had other good blocks as well, both tackle positions.

Since this is a "neutral" Webb thread, not one of those explicitly bashing him, gonna re-post a comment I made in joeinpa's thread, because I haven't seen anyone else mention it, so maybe I'm off base, but I don't think so:
Quote:
One thing I did NOT like about Webb last night was his demeanor, showing frustration and/or disgust when there were arguable drops. I get the frustration, but for a guy who has yet to show anything in this League to express (by facial expression and body language) dismay with his receivers, he's not going to win respect or effort from his teammates.

It's a fair comment. If he's gonna let his emotions negatively effect his performance, it's something he has to try to keep under control.

webb looked horrible, but continues to talk as if he is an established pro
He's not sticking his head in the sand...
Simms11 : 8/10/2018 10:16 am : link
he knows he needs to play better and that he's capable. He just needs to maintain his composure and his mechanics will improve as well. Let's see if he can improve next week.

I'll say this however, if Lauletta plays well again next week, I think there might be more of a comp for back up brewing.
It's the first preseason game
allstarjim : 8/10/2018 10:18 am : link
I thought some of you were supposed to get out the overreactions in the overreactions thread from yesterday.

The best thing about last night is no major injuries at least from everything I've seen. That's the biggest positive by far, and let's hope we get out of the preseason without losing anyone.

Everything else is nbd. It's one preseason game of 4. Webb, Lauletta, and everyone else are going to get many more opportunities to show what they can do.

So what would you like him to say? He critiques himself a bit and said he needs to get better, all while remaining confident he can do that.

I have no idea why anyone would have a problem with what he said.
Obviously a worrisome performance
Jim in Forest Hills : 8/10/2018 1:19 pm : link
when so many are hoping he can be heir apparent. Combinne that with our resident draft guru comparing him to Brock Osweiler and he played EXACTLY like Osweiler.

All that said, its just too early. Kid hasn't played in a looong time. In all honesty, it looks like he doesn't trust himself out there. I hope the kid just decides to say what the hell and let er rip. I want to see Webb out there having fun.
