My general observations....

George from PA : 8/10/2018 7:11 am
The Browns are a great team to play 1st in preseason as they seem to truly game plan. Especially on defense, as Williams wants the defense to feel they are invincable. Playing 8 in the box due to Barkley (without OBJ) and showing a bunch of different blitzes are examples.

I am finally feeling better about the OL. They missed one blitz up the middle but otherwise, they did great and Cleveland was throwing a bunch different looks. I thought they open holes run blocking and kepts pocket clean. The back up tackles looked solid and i was expecting much worse from the practice reports. They were not manhandled.

The DL line looked great and our run defense was stout all night. It obviously bothered The Browns as they tried running on 3rd down several times with the same results?

The RB ran hard, we should be set.

We ran the ball and stopped the run. That is big.

The Giants won the war in the trenches

I am not going to worry too much about the passing game, yet. New scheme, a ton of different WRs. The passing game sucked but I will worry if its sucks after preseason game 3....not now.

I think we have enough corners to fill roster, which was a worry.

Good to see kicker make all his kicks.

No injuries!!!!!

Concerns

Will we ever guard a TE? We make every TE a hofer. Wtf?

Can any FS make a play? Not impressed.

Punt and punt coverage and punt and kick return are all suspect. I understand plenty of non nflers were playing. Not impressed. Gotten used to being outplayed on specials every week....

Last play of the half was unacceptable .

One last point,

It goes without saying, Webb was a disappointment .....but in his press conference , he did remind me that he has not played a game in over a year and a half. He was pressing and missing wide open receivers and has put a major bullseye on his back. If he continues, the fans will turn him.....talk about having a long week. Lets see how he rebounds, but he is now a red flag.
Unless you believe Shurmur to be a liar,
Big Blue '56 : 8/10/2018 7:47 am : link
he seemsto be fine with Webb in general. He was dreadful last night. The absolutes about his ability after the “performance” he put on were pathetic, but par for the course here. Can’t just say he was dogshit last night and move on. No, he doesn’t belong on an NFL field is what was offered, after 1 preseason game. That observation and observations similar to it, are totally reckless at this point, but again, this is what goes on here and in the media.

He may be what Shurmur thinks he is or might be, or, he may indeed turn out to be complete dogshit. But after 1 game to make such negative ABSOLUTE proclamations is shameful, imo..That might be more pathetic than his crappy performance

bent out of shape over the first preseason game, but (sigh) new coaches, new players, same shit.

It's hard to evaluate the first team when they only play two series because how often in real games do you see a team not do much early then play better as the game progresses.

I thought, except for the first play, the offensive line was not good. On Barkley's other four runs he had nowhere to go. Eli had to rush throws because he had a defender bearing down on him. Ugh.

I was hoping Webb would look like he belonged. Hell, Roback looked more like an NFL QB than Webb. Please put a suit of armor on Eli.

Eli Apple, nice coverage on the 21 yarder to Higgins. Can't really tell how he did when he was out there, but that was pretty bad. I'm not convinced that this guy is going to amount to much.
Felt as though
mako J : 8/10/2018 7:55 am : link
The staff had Webb "on display". Shurmur made mention of calling more passes than the norm. I wonder if the staff already feels that their rookie is a better fit, and they're auditioning Webb for a team in need. Perhaps a trade for an OL or DB?

I can't imagine there's a team that would do it, but injuries do happen.
besides the obvious throw to 2 Browns
Dankbeerman : 8/10/2018 7:59 am : link
most of Webbs decision making was sound. He showed some ability to move around and the arm strength was obvious as he continualy over threw the ball. The throws need to get ironed out but I feel they can be. He needs reps, lots of them, and Eli will most likey notbhave to worry about getting benched anytime soon
Oh and one more
Gman11 : 8/10/2018 8:00 am : link
They still can't convert a freaking screen pass.

Apple was just another garbage pick by the former regime. He has extreme difficulty with a very important aspect for his position - locating the ball. This is not something new. He has no clue where the ball is when the ball is in the air. That's a pretty big problem being a DB.
hey, I only watched the first half...

but c'mon, last night's game was a disaster… one big run? the offense looked just like last year… unimaginative play calling, running backs running into the pile, Eli pressured and falling down… Webb was terrible, no touch on his passes…

Our run defense was solid, but why would any team run against us when they have open receivers all over the field. Mayfield looked like an NFL QB… Webb did not…

We were a 3-13 team that should have been blown up and restarted… no running back is going to fix this mess. Hoping things get better is not a strategy...
With Webb
cjac : 8/10/2018 8:05 am : link
the excuse of "not playing a game in a year and a half" is total horse shit.

if you cant complete a pass that isnt a dumpoff in a game that doesnt matter, you're just not a good QB.

I remember not being impressed with anything when he played in the pre season last year.

Amen to that, they did not look good.

Oh and if anyone need some yards, just throw it to the guy Eli Apple is covering
C'mon man..

It is the fucking preseason. What exactly do you think you're going to see for playcalls?
If we're going to go by first preseason game performances.....
Ryan in Albany : 8/10/2018 8:13 am : link
Gettleman drafted the greatest running back in the history of the NFL...
Let's not overreact
BigBlueHens : 8/10/2018 8:17 am : link
It was one preseason game. They barely had a game plan, and the play calling was vanilla. Shurmur was not going to open up the play book for the first preseason game. The offense was without OBJ, as well.

I thought the starting defensive line looked great. Snacks, Tomlinson, and Hill are going to be a good trio.

Another player I thought looked good was Andrew Adams. He was all over the field with the second team.

Best part, no injuries. The most important thing in preseason is too keep the team healthy.
Children, i get many of you have agendas
George from PA : 8/10/2018 8:27 am : link
Because the Giants had to draft a franchise QB.

No offense but they do not need to prove anything to us.

Its preseason....

Having new coaches has an advantage...no reason not be creative....no need to show anything for the Jaguars to use.

Webb played poorly....but he has plenty of time to redeem himself.

The OL looked better....that will play out as well

Webb payed in the pre-season last year...
ZogZerg : 8/10/2018 8:36 am : link
year and a half comment is BS

He was a massive disappointment after all the off-season hype. That's the bottom line.
Zog
cjac : 8/10/2018 8:46 am : link
i said the same thing at 8:05

the thing about the pre season is that if you have talent, this is where it shines. Thats how Victor Cruz was discovered. If you have talent it will flash in these games. If Webb cant put it on a guy in a game that doesnt matter, how is he going to do it in a real game?
my general observations
giantfan2000 : 8/10/2018 8:52 am : link
the Giants team seem the same as past few season

Giants are really two different teams

when OBJ is playing Giants are dangerous and can erupt in a big play at anytime.

when OBJ is not playing they are predicable unable to execute with medicare OL, thin at WR and aging QB

the starting OL did not look great to me
ColHowPepper : 8/10/2018 8:54 am : link
Giants could not run right, behind Flowers and Omameh, other than Barkley's opening run, which he pretty much created by himself

I agree, but would admit his performance was a bit concerning

you got this from 2 series, 1 in which they scored?
Over reaction seems like the standard on this site
George from PA : 8/10/2018 9:32 am : link
The starters barely played.

No definitive conclusion can be made.

The Browns
Jay in Toronto : 8/10/2018 9:55 am : link
won all their preseason games last year.
Basically a scrimmage that's meaningless but a few things seem
arniefez : 8/10/2018 10:01 am : link
to be obvious. The OL is better. How could it be worse? But how much better? The 2nd team OL was much better so maybe there's some hope for depth. The DL stopped the run really well. There was a hint of a pass rush and more attacking. The back end of the defense still lacks speed especially at FS. FS might be the weakest position on the whole team. Hopefully the FS is on another team right now.
Barkley did have 4 other runs
5BowlsSoon : 8/10/2018 10:09 am : link
For 4 yards. So 1-39 and 4-4.

Webb stunk and I doubt he can improve much. Lauletta should rise up.

The CBs minus Jenkins scare me. The safeties minus Collins scare me.

Don’t forget, the Browns TE is supposed to be a beast, so a beast beat us up...it happens.

We did look good in the trenches...that encourages me a lot.

They want a game plan that is equivalent to a playoff game, after all preseason is truly indicative of what the season will look like... Just go back to 1972 when they were 6-0 in the preseason....

I've seen this incorrect statement made repeatedly since last night. The actual facts are he had 4 rushes Total. So he had 3 rushes other than his 39 yarder. One was for a loss, the other 2 were moderate gains.

It reminds me of those with the anti-Eli agenda who keep saying Eli is 38, when he is actually 37, and won't be 38 until early 2019. Kind of pathetic...

the current starting FS on the unofficial depth chart didn't play last night and has apparently been impressive in camp. He's also faster than both Thompson and Adams.

It's not just on bbi. The media keeps throwing out the same "unimpressive" stat. Here's a video of Barkley's runs. He has one big negative gain because the play was blown up and makes something out of nothing on the other two. Oh, and one of those "5 carries" is Jonathan Stewart and this is the NFL's YT channel. I suspect this is where the discrepancy is coming from.
