The Screen Pass

lecky : 8/10/2018 8:04 am
New coaches, new OL, new Running Backs and the screen pass looked exactly the same. I know it is preseason but this is a weapon that works so well for most NFL teams and yet we still cant even get it close to right.
Eli

has always had trouble with the timing, ball placement and velocity of his screen throws.
If you noticed..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/10/2018 8:09 am : link
they didn't try a screen to Barkley. Until then, I wouldn't put much stock in things. You aren't disguising plays in the preseason.
Really?
Big Blue '56 : 8/10/2018 8:09 am : link
He threw 7 passes. Really?

And one of them was a screen pass that looked exactly like the many many screen passes he has thrown throughout his career. What is your point?
Sorry, but pretty much everything they did looked the same.

I thought I was watching last years team except for the Barkley run.

Hard to believe with all the changes. But this team has grown too dependent on Beckham. Seems the only time a receiver gets open is 5 yards downfield on 3rd down when we need more than 10 for a first.

Agreed. I don't think we're going to end up like last season's team, but last night's game looked almost identical to most of last year's. But we saw hardly anything of the 1's and nothing at all of OBJ (which, again, was like last year). I'm thinking we'll go 8-8.
The starters were in for two series, and Eli
mikeinbloomfield : 8/10/2018 8:58 am : link
missed a seam pass, and someone named Hunter Sharp dropped a first down thrown right to him (when he was wide open, I might add). The best player on offense didn't play, and we all know how bland offenses are in preseason. Our new RB averaged 8 yards a carry.

Holy cow.
For all you pleople that just want to dismiss the OP
chuckydee9 : 8/10/2018 9:43 am : link
this isn't about 7 passes yesterday.. Eli for his career has been bad at screen passes.. we draft a RB who should be a huge weapon in the pass game and our QB still can't complete screen passes on a consistent basis.. Eli needs to improve this..
Eli threw a screen, and he mis fired badly
NYG007 : 8/10/2018 9:44 am : link
With 3 blockers set up. I am huge Eli fan, always will be. However, he has been god awful at screen passes dating back to Tiki. He just struggles with that throw. Ironically, we have a great screen pass rb now, just hope Eli can make them happen.

Pre-season, who cares. However, no Giant fan on here is being honest with himself if you state you are not concerned with Eli's inability to make the screen throw.

He didn't miss the seam pass it was right on the money, the TE did not turn around for the ball
The RB never disengaged from his block on the screen
Reale01 : 8/10/2018 9:58 am : link
It was not all on Eli. The overall point the OP makes is valid. The Giants have never been good at the screen pass and it would be good to improve.
The Giants..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/10/2018 10:00 am : link
(and Eli) were actually pretty darn effective running screens with Tiki and Bradshaw.

But I know memories are short
Wait
dep026 : 8/10/2018 10:01 am : link
so the ball goes through Stewarts hands, and its Eli's fault. lol.

I guess when we ran screens ineffectively with Webb and Lauletta - that is forgotten too.

The ball was thrown behind Stewart's head on the
Jimmy Googs : 8/10/2018 10:15 am : link
wrong side of where he was heading, and it had too much on it.

That is why the play failed...
Lets call a spade a spade with Eli, he sucks at screens
Jim in Forest Hills : 8/10/2018 10:27 am : link
Dont know what it is, but we've all seen it. He either doesn't sell it well or has some kind of tell and rockets the ball in tight quarters. Its ok for us to admit it.

I've seen enough of other NFL QBs throw screens with touch to know he's not good at it.
Yep
Jimmy Googs : 8/10/2018 10:30 am : link
although not everybody sees it...
Yup Eli has always been horrible at screen passes
arniefez : 8/10/2018 10:38 am : link
but Tiki made it work and Barkley will too. That doesn't mean that the people who point out how horribly Eli runs screens plays are wrong they're not. It must be exhausting for BBI/Fox News posters to have to sift through every thread and spew their Pat Hanlon approved state run talking points. Guess what you can be a huge fan of Eli Manning's and the Giants and still say there are things he doesn't do well. Screen passes are one of them.
Eli was successful at throwing screens
dep026 : 8/10/2018 10:44 am : link
to Tiki, Shockey, Bradshaw, and Jacobs. So this notion that he has always sucked at it, is just false and wrong. There are so many elements to a screen that have to work. The QB selling it and throwing a good ball, OL selling it and getting out and blocking, the RB selling it and getting his head around with timing. if ONE of those things is off, the screen will look like shit.

Sometimes Eli screws up, sometimes the OL screw up, and sometimes the RB screws up.

But I guess not everyone wants to see it. Or refuse too.
All the elements other than a good throw
Jimmy Googs : 8/10/2018 10:47 am : link
were there on that one last night.

And agree that Barkley probably makes a difference in overcoming the other deficiencies in the Giant screen process going forward...
Eli is laughably terrible at it
mittenedman : 8/10/2018 10:53 am : link
and so is Webb. There is an artform to throwing a screen and really, it's Eli's worst nightmare play for his skillset.
Heard Jeff Schwartz on NFL Sirius Radio this morning.....
Simms11 : 8/10/2018 11:10 am : link
and he pretty much indicated the screen is a tough play to execute because of timing and the fact that the Giants have essentially a whole new Oline will take some time to perfect. He expects to see many more screen passes in pre-season.
Which is why its practiced
Jimmy Googs : 8/10/2018 12:07 pm : link
But even a whole lot of practice is not going to deliver a different result unless the players correct their flaws...
It's not Eli
Coach Red Beaulieu : 8/10/2018 12:07 pm : link
Unless he's giving away something subtle. Our screen passes get blown up right away, where you have to throw at the receiver's feet.

Bad timing or something.
That screen to Stewart was setup
Jim in Forest Hills : 8/10/2018 12:31 pm : link
except that the ball was a rocket and behind his head. Eli just doesn't have that really short touch. Screen passes the throw has to be on the money because that split second to make an awkward catch blows up the play.

Eli also struggles on those little loft like throws with RBs, where he has to throw above a DL and hit a runner in stride. Its ok, he has many strengths, he's just not good at these.
Couldn't agree

Eli has always struggled with those short passes. I have no idea why. You'd think Eli would be putting in the work to get good at screens.

The times Eli connected with Bradshaw and Tiki, it was more often an effective dump off of 5+ yards as opposed to screens, IMO.
