New coaches, new OL, new Running Backs and the screen pass looked exactly the same. I know it is preseason but this is a weapon that works so well for most NFL teams and yet we still cant even get it close to right.
I thought I was watching last years team except for the Barkley run.
Hard to believe with all the changes. But this team has grown too dependent on Beckham. Seems the only time a receiver gets open is 5 yards downfield on 3rd down when we need more than 10 for a first.
Agreed. I don't think we're going to end up like last season's team, but last night's game looked almost identical to most of last year's. But we saw hardly anything of the 1's and nothing at all of OBJ (which, again, was like last year). I'm thinking we'll go 8-8.
missed a seam pass, and someone named Hunter Sharp dropped a first down thrown right to him (when he was wide open, I might add). The best player on offense didn't play, and we all know how bland offenses are in preseason. Our new RB averaged 8 yards a carry.
Holy cow.
For all you pleople that just want to dismiss the OP
this isn't about 7 passes yesterday.. Eli for his career has been bad at screen passes.. we draft a RB who should be a huge weapon in the pass game and our QB still can't complete screen passes on a consistent basis.. Eli needs to improve this..
With 3 blockers set up. I am huge Eli fan, always will be. However, he has been god awful at screen passes dating back to Tiki. He just struggles with that throw. Ironically, we have a great screen pass rb now, just hope Eli can make them happen.
Pre-season, who cares. However, no Giant fan on here is being honest with himself if you state you are not concerned with Eli's inability to make the screen throw.

He didn't miss the seam pass it was right on the money, the TE did not turn around for the ball
The RB never disengaged from his block on the screen
Dont know what it is, but we've all seen it. He either doesn't sell it well or has some kind of tell and rockets the ball in tight quarters. Its ok for us to admit it.
I've seen enough of other NFL QBs throw screens with touch to know he's not good at it.
but Tiki made it work and Barkley will too. That doesn't mean that the people who point out how horribly Eli runs screens plays are wrong they're not. It must be exhausting for BBI/Fox News posters to have to sift through every thread and spew their Pat Hanlon approved state run talking points. Guess what you can be a huge fan of Eli Manning's and the Giants and still say there are things he doesn't do well. Screen passes are one of them.
to Tiki, Shockey, Bradshaw, and Jacobs. So this notion that he has always sucked at it, is just false and wrong. There are so many elements to a screen that have to work. The QB selling it and throwing a good ball, OL selling it and getting out and blocking, the RB selling it and getting his head around with timing. if ONE of those things is off, the screen will look like shit.
Sometimes Eli screws up, sometimes the OL screw up, and sometimes the RB screws up.
But I guess not everyone wants to see it. Or refuse too.
and he pretty much indicated the screen is a tough play to execute because of timing and the fact that the Giants have essentially a whole new Oline will take some time to perfect. He expects to see many more screen passes in pre-season.
except that the ball was a rocket and behind his head. Eli just doesn't have that really short touch. Screen passes the throw has to be on the money because that split second to make an awkward catch blows up the play.
Eli also struggles on those little loft like throws with RBs, where he has to throw above a DL and hit a runner in stride. Its ok, he has many strengths, he's just not good at these.

Eli has always struggled with those short passes. I have no idea why. You'd think Eli would be putting in the work to get good at screens.
The times Eli connected with Bradshaw and Tiki, it was more often an effective dump off of 5+ yards as opposed to screens, IMO.
And one of them was a screen pass that looked exactly like the many many screen passes he has thrown throughout his career. What is your point?

But I know memories are short
I guess when we ran screens ineffectively with Webb and Lauletta - that is forgotten too.
That is why the play failed...

And agree that Barkley probably makes a difference in overcoming the other deficiencies in the Giant screen process going forward...
Bad timing or something.
