Why do we continue to do it? We dont have a dynamic returner and havent for years. Just leads to being backed up inside your own 20. The league gives you the ball at the 25.
Even the one long return was a flukey play where the returner was knocked into open field.

What they are worried about is can they block it right....so you try it in preseason because they don't practice it full tilt in training camp sessions.
Last year, they were 21st in % of kicks returned.
New coach and new philosophy, but how in the world can you determine what they will do based on preseason??
The staff wants to work on returns, so players are often instructed to bring kicks out to get some ST action.

If you don't want to "risk" either one of them on kickoff returns, then I agree with OP and we should just take it at the 25 unless a kick is short.
