Returning kickoffs

Why do we continue to do it? We dont have a dynamic returner and havent for years. Just leads to being backed up inside your own 20. The league gives you the ball at the 25.

Even the one long return was a flukey play where the returner was knocked into open field.

Down every ball.

I think that might have been preseason (evaluation vs winning)

the returners might have been told to take it out irrespective. Coaches may have wanted to get a look at them. It clearly didn't make sense to return most of the kickoffs.

Unless you have a dynamic returner. Factoring in penalties and potential turnovers just down it and take it at the 25

..the Giants aren't that worried about field position.

What they are worried about is can they block it right....so you try it in preseason because they don't practice it full tilt in training camp sessions.

and you're acting like the Giants often bring balls out when they shouldn't.

Last year, they were 21st in % of kicks returned.

New coach and new philosophy, but how in the world can you determine what they will do based on preseason??

The staff wants to work on returns, so players are often instructed to bring kicks out to get some ST action.

w/players w/reputations of being outstanding STers. But,where they didn't upgrade was in terms of returners. The 2 best returners on the roster are OBJ/Saquon & neither will return (see Jason Sehorn) except perhaps late in a game where a score/field position is necessary. Hope they address this as teams make cuts in a few weeks!

should be able to be dynamite returners. Not sure we have anyone else on the roster who could excel at it.

If you don't want to "risk" either one of them on kickoff returns, then I agree with OP and we should just take it at the 25 unless a kick is short.

Raymond had one decent PR, but other then that he was trying to do too much. At this point, I'd just be happy if Raymond could hold onto the football.
