Big picture, team depth

njm : 8/10/2018 9:05 am
You don't pass final judgement based on 1 preseason game, but I see this team having real problems with depth at a few of positions. Both CB and S are a concern once you get past the starters. In addition, I only see 2 WRs who I can guarantee will be on the final 53. Yes, one's great and one's more than solid, but we saw last year what can happen with injuries.

I want to see a couple of more games with respect to the OL. The starters were fine as expected, but I also saw some reserves who could actually contribute if the group gets hit by injuries.

Two positions where depth is NOT a problem are RB and TE. It looks like there are 5 viable NFL RBs on this roster, and 3 unquestioned NFL TEs with a couple more showing reserve level possibilities. I'd love to stash 1 from each position on the PS as injury insurance.

I want to look at another few games, but it also looked to me like the depth concerns with regards to the DL were overblown. Time will tell.
DB and Safety are a concern WITH the starters

outside of Jenkins and Collins what is there?

Apple cannot locate the ball
I agree with most but have people been concerned with our DL?

To me ILB has to be on that list. However, this is what happens after years of horrible drafting. I think Gettleman did an outstanding job this offseason but with our cap and limited resources there was only so much that could have been done in one offseason.
We knew that since after FA and the draft though

You can not expect all holes on a 3-13 team to be filled in one off season. Secondary depth will have to be addressed next year, until then the Giants just have to get lucky with injuries and maybe one or two unexpected guys stepping up.

As much as we would like to see differently, it's gonna take a huge effort and all the bounces to go the Giants' way in order to win 9 or more games this year.
Depth stinks at multiple units

And likely long term solutions aren’t on the roster at center, right tackle, perhaps right guard, WR opposite Beckham, FS, #3CB. The first units looked competent when on the field. Once they came off, much like every preseason game over the last 5 years or so, the game became unwatchable. They’re probably a year or 2 away. Hopefully Eli doesn’t break down by then because it’s scary what’s behind him currently.
i thought the back up olines played well

kept webb upright and created good running holes...

i thought backup front 7 qas very good against the run...

adams played well as the back up to collins and i thought the back up corners were not crazy bad
I'm waiting for this team

To show me a third wide receiver. Haven't seen him yet and there certainly wasn't one on the team last year.

Practically no depth on defense once you get passed the starters. Injuries can kill this team.
Where was Lattimore
5BowlsSoon : 8/10/2018 9:57 am : link
I don’t recall seeing him.

I think there are 2 OCs on the roster that may not be great but are certainly competent. I'm much more concerned elsewhere.
at WR, Im pretty sure Lattimore and Russell Shephard are locks

At this point in the preseason that's troubling. I hope things change.

I agree. One of the guys I wanted to see more from. It's still early. Hopefully next game.

Do you mean Latimer?
Roster is top heavy
JonC : 8/10/2018 11:56 am : link
Difficult to carry depth across the entire starting units, but it will take some time to replace the bottom half of the roster. They've still got a number of starting spots to upgrade, most likely.
Depth is a concern
PSIMMS 22-25-268 : 8/10/2018 2:01 pm : link
And our starting secondary is weak at one CB, FS and slot corner. LB depth is not good (and Ogletree better step up his game). D-Line is very solid for starters and backups. O-Line second unit looks suspect other than B. Jones, who should be the starting center. Gallman will hopefully win the #2 RB job. WR depth is again a concern, but OBJ, Shep and Latimer could be a good 1-2-3 and Engram/Ellison a solid pair of TE's.
LB
Toth029 : 8/10/2018 2:08 pm : link
Depth is fine for OLB. Not much for ILB, however.
