Zak DeOssie and Kerry Wynn

njm : 8/10/2018 9:19 am
Each offseason I read here about how the Giants should move on from these 2 players. And after last night I'm reminded how well they fit their roles and why, unless their skills erode, it would be nuts to get rid of them. DeOssie's skills speak for themselves. With respect to Wynn, he's a backup who doesn't make you shake your head when he's out into the game and is also an EXCELLENT coverage team player. You need a few players like that on your 53.
Anyone doesn't understand the importance

of the long snapper doesn't remember the 49er playoff game. Let alone zaks ability to cover punts. Wynn should make the team as well especially since Mauro is suspended at the beginning of the season.
I don't remember anybody questioning DeOssie's importance.

I did mention the other day that he is getting paid a lot and it doesn't seem guaranteed so we could lower his cap number this year if needed and we have no other LS on the roster.
Wynn is a perennial preseason All-Pro in the base defense

but in the regular season his value is on specials. I don't think he has the ability to be effective on a regular basis against 1s, but he hustles and makes plays in the "forgotten third" of the game. He's made a career of that and also seems like a quality locker room guy. A "glue" type of player you need to build a team.

DeOssie fulfills a critical need and is one of the best in the business at it, has been for a long time. I can recall maybe twice in his entire career that he hasn't been pretty much perfect on both long and short snaps. He fills two spots, gets downfield as well as any LS in the game and can make plays in coverage. That ability was on display last night.

People that believe we should move on from DeOssie because he's not a contributor at LB simply don't understand the game... in that respect he's like a litmus test. He is as much a Giant-for-life as anyone on this team, I think.
Problem is in the 49er game

We had one of the best long snappers in the games history ( I believe because on an injury) and he screwed up royal.

Though not by you, I believe it's been brought up at a minimum for the last 4 off seasons. Nobody said he was incompetent, just that they should go with someone cheaper and more versatile.

Junkin was 41 years old and had been out of the league for a year.
I loved their excitement on the forced fumble

shows that some players do care about "meaningless" preseason games. Even OBJ was excited on the sideline (I think it was the same play).

He was brought in because the LS (don’t remember who) was injured. In fact, I think the guy who got injured because the starter LS got hurt.

Stil, DeOssie makes a lot more money than most at his position. But, he’s really good, spaps both punts and FGs and is great on specials. You can make an argument about looking for a cheaper alternative. To me, Wynn is a different story. While he’s a good ST player, I don’t think much of him as a DE. I don’t know what his salary is but at some point, he’ll be too expensive for his value as a DE. I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t make the team because they want to keep someone who has more potential and/ or cheaper

Yeah, that 1 mill dollar salary is so much more than those vet min LS out there... could really use that extra 350K....
Wynn
XBRONX : 8/10/2018 6:07 pm : link
makes $825K he will make the roster again.

Exactly, it surprises me that more Giants fans don't appreciate DeOssie more. Some are under the impression that the long snappers for other teams actually contribute on offense or defense as well which isn't the case.
Wynn does this every preaseason
Jay on the Island : 8/10/2018 6:44 pm : link
he plays well against 2nd and 3rd teamers and then once the season starts he does nothing. He is a solid special teams player but I was hoping that a younger player with some upside would beat him out.
