NFT: Anybody use a mattress topper?

AcidTest : 8/10/2018 12:52 pm
Can anyone recommend a good mattress topper? Amazon has many, and most have excellent reviews, but they have different features. Most are two or three inches thick. Which is better? Some have gel, some are memory foam. What do you recommend? I have a queen sized bed. Thanks.
I hear/see roughly 30 My Pillow commercials a day....

general comfort?

Or protecting the mattress from splashy, nighttime waterworks?
i used to have one

on top of a shitty mattress. was ok.

then i got a nice new firmer mattress with foam topper built in - great.

then we had kids and gave it to my son, we got a nicer newer larger similar mattress. LOVE IT.

topper that goes over top of a gel memory foam (2") that sits atop my regular mattress. I originally got a Serta coil mattress with it's own pillow-top. But despite my expectations that it would "soften" over time, it was like a cushioned brick. Couldn't stand the discomfort on pressure points. Could have just bought another new mattress, but it was essentially new so I went the way of adding a topper. It also was a Serta product, but I don't recall the model.

Gel toppers are also memory foam, but are infused with a gel that helps dissipate heat. There are also latex and microfiber toppers among others. Memory foam is cheapest, so you might try it first if you're not sure which to get. If you have a twin bed, you might try one on there first.

those gel memory foam ones and it makes a big difference IMO. I'm not sure what the brand name is but it's blue and about three inches thick.

I'm trying to buy a new mattress right now (not a topper)

and it's overwhelming.

I (think) I've settled on the Sapira by Leesa or the "ultimate Hybrid with a 3" Talalay foam from Arizona Premium Mattresses.
Seems like a main difference is memory or poly foam in the Sapira versus latex on the other one. Got hug shoulder pain I need to alleviate. Does anyone have experience with these mattresses? (not to miller the thread ...(sheepish grin))
I had one made years ago. I don't think that company is in business.

It's made of talalay latex with a cotton cover. I've been very happy with it.

We bought a new mattress about 18 months ago. Considered some of the online options, but didn’t like not being able to try them out first. Yes, they generally have generous return/refund policies. But if you do that, you’re under the gun to get a replacement on very short notice.

In the end, we decided on a local independent dealer that makes its own mattresses. High quality mattresses, full openness on construction and materials, low sales pressure, strong warranty.

It’s insane how many online options there are now. Tuft and Needle, Leesa, Saatva, Casper, Helix, GhostBed, Nectar, DreamCloud, etc. I’ve never known anyone to own one so I’m hesitant but they get great reviews.

Yeah and then. Feel good about my choices until I read that nearly all of the mattress review sites (“Sleep-this or that”, “Mattress-this or that”, etc) get kickbacks to give positive reviews.

The best site I believe is The Mattress Underground. They don’t really review mattresses, as they believe comfort is relative to each person. Their site is geared around on Mattress construction and how to evaluate mattresses. It can be a lot to digest, but I think it’s well worth it, given you spend a third of your life on a Mattress. The also have a great forum.

Unfortunately, this is a not a case of "one size fits all." I'm an innerspring guy. Tried two different Saatvas last year, but sent both back (costs of transportation down the drain, but mattress money returned). Then got a Charles Rogers Estate 9000: winner! Liked it so much, I got another (new, slightly different version this year): even better. For me, that is.

I absolutely hate the mattress I have now and it's not that old, so a topper is exactly what I bought and it made a huge difference.

I got a 4" memory foam topper with cooling gel - I think it was LinenSpa (had mostly really good reviews, etc) - but it was well worth it. It totally transformed my bed and alleviated some of my neck/back issues I was having from my mattress as it was before.
